Description

LARRA E. PERKINS.
Nursing-Bottles.
NO.154,562 I PatentedSept.1,1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LARRA E. PERKINS, OF TAU'NTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN NURSING-BOTTLES,
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,562, dated September 1,1874; application filed July 24, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LARRA. E. PERKINS, of Taunton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Nursing-Bottles,- of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to Which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation, showing my improvement; and Fig. 2, a vertical section of the stopple.
Like letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts in the different figures of the drawin g.
My invention relates more especially to that class of nursing-bottles which are provided with flexible tubes; and consists in a stopple provided with a vent and screw for graduating or closing the same, as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, the object being to enable the contents of the bottle to be withdrawn with ease and facility, as required, and at the same time to prevent spilling from transportation. It is Well known that in or dinary nursing-bottles the stopples are fitted closely, no means being provided to admit air into the interior of the bottle excepting through the tube, so that as the milk is withdrawn a vacuum is formed, which finally prevents the passage of the same through the tube, causing the child to release the mouth-piece for the purpose of admitting air to supply the vacuum, when the process of nursing may be renewed until another vacuum is created. My invention is designed to obviate this objection, and to that end I provide the stopple with an orifice or vent anda screw for closing the same, as hereinafter described.
In the drawing, A is the'tube; B, the stopple; O, the cap of the stopple, and D the thumb-screw for closing the orifice or vent E, which extends vertically through both the body and cap of the stopple.
It will be obvious that the size of the orifice may be readily graduated or entirely closed by turning in the screw, and that when open the liquid contents of the bottle may be easily withdrawn without creating a vacuum, as set forth.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is In a nursing-bottle, the stopple B, provided with the orifice or vent E .and screw D, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
