Description

PATENTEI) MAR. 5, 1907'.
H. D. SINGER.
NURSING BOTTLE.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 23, 1906.
' Qwi/bmeoow HAROLD DOUGLAS SINGER, OF OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
NURSING-BOTTLE- fipecification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 5, 1907.
Applioion filed February 23, 1906. Serial No. 802,467.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAROLD DOUGLAS SINGER, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Nursing-Bottles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use'the same.
This invention relates to nursing-bottles; and one of the objects of the same is to provide a non-breakable bottle.
Another object is to provide a bottle with a readily-detachable upper portion to permit access to the interior-of the bottle for cleansing.
Another object is to provide means for admitting air into the bottle to take the place of the liquid or food as it is drawn therefrom.
Still another object is to provide means for calling attention to the nurse or attendant when the contents of the bottle have been withdrawn therefrom.
Another object is to. provide a bottle capable of being heated directly by a lamp or on a stove.
I have also provided graduating-ridges upon'the inside of the bottle in order that any given quantity of food may be placed therein.
The objects referred to are attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1' is a central vertical sectional view of a nursing-bottle made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the cork'or stopper therefor,'and Fig.
3 is a central sectional view of the same.
Referring to the drawing for a more particular description of my invention, the numeral 1 designates the body portion. of the nursing-bottle, which is preferably made of aluminium or other light durable metal of a non-corrosive character, said body portion being of substantially circular cross-section and provided with a flange or enlargement 2 at its upper edge to serve for the seat for a rubber gasket 3. The interior portion at the upper end of the bottle-body is screw-threade as. at 4, to receive the threaded portion 5 of the cap or cover 6. A flange 7 surrounds thecap immediately above the threadedportion and is adapted to bear upon the rubber gasket when the parts are secured together to form a liquid-tight joint at this point. The neck or mouth 8 of the bottle is of a shape to accommodate an ordinary rubber nipple.
it will be understood of course that the cap or upper portion of the bottle may also be formed of aluminium or other metal or material of a non-frangible non-corrosive nature. On the interior of the body portion of the bottle a series of graduating-ridges 9 are formed, said ridges being for the purpose of indicating the quantity of food it is desired to place in the bottle.
At a point near the bottom of the bottlebody is a projecting rim or neck 10, preferably formed integral with the bottle-body, and a perforation 11 is formed in the wall of said body portion near the lower portion of the neck or rim.
A stopper 12, provided with an opening 13, which corresponds in size to the erforation 11 in the wall of the bottle-body,1s provided with a metal diaphragm or disk 14, in which an opening is formed conforming to the size of the opening through the cork or stopper. Secured to this diaphragm in line with the opening through the cork and diaphragm is a rubber film 15, having a pin-hole 16 therein.
The 0 eration and. use of my invention may be escribed as follows: When the bottle is in use and lying upon its side, the cork or stopper being placed within the neck with its opening therein corresponding with the opemng in the wall of-the bottle-body, air may be drawn in through the pin-hole in the rubber film to take the place of the liquid withdrawn from thebottle, and when the contents of the bottle have become exhausted the air drawn through the pin-hole in the rubber film will make a slightv whistling sound, sufiicient to indicate to the nurse or attendant that the bottle is empty. Durin the filling of the bottle the cork may be turned so that the opening therein does not register with the opening in the bottle.
The object of making the bottle of a metal like aluminium is that it may be placed upon a stove or over a spirit-lamp or other heating device for warming the food, and the object of the removable cap or upper portion of the bottle is that ready access may be had to the interior for cleaning purposes.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a nursing-bottle made in accordance with my invention has many points of advantage over the ordinary glass bottle, being nonbreakable and of a material that may be laced upon a heating device for warmin ood, may be readily cleaned, is provide( with means to permit air to take the place of the food as it is used, and is also provided with a whistle or alarm to notify a nurse or attendant that the bottle is empty.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I- claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A bottle having a vent, and a stopper for said vent, said stopper having an opening extending therethrongh, a diaphragm at a point between the ends of said opening and the stopper, and a rubber lilm closing said openings of the stopper and diaphragm and havin a pin-hole, substantially as described.
2. nursing-bottle provided with a neck or rim near the lower end thereof, an opening in the wall of the bottle-body within said rim, in combination with a cork or stopper having an opening therethrough and adapted to be adjusted to register with the opening in the bottle-body, and an alarm or sounding device in the cork or stopper, substantially as describeu.
3. A nursing-bottle provided with a neck or rim, an openin in the bottle near one side of said rim, a cor or stopper adapted to fit within the rim, said cork or stopper having a metal diaphragm therein provided with a perforation, said cork provided with a perforation registering with the perforation in the diaphragm, a rubber film closing said opening in the cork and diaphragm and provided with an air-duct or pin-hole for admitting air, and sounding an alarm when the bottle is empty, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
HAROLD DOUGLAS SINGER.
