Description

July 7, 1925.
F. FARRELL SHEET HOLDER FOR IRONING BOARDS Filed Dec. 13, 1922 L Errd Patented July 7, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FANNY FARRELL, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
SHEET HOLDER FOR IRONING BOARDS.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that FANNY FARRELLi, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at St. Louis and State of Missouri, has invented new and useful Improvements in Sheet Holders for Ironing Boards, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a device or attachment in the form of a. bracket for use in connection with an ironing board to support those portions of a laundered object such as a sheet or the equivalent thereof which can not be accommodated on the surface of the board, or those portions of an object of considerable area which are not being ironed but which should be prevented from dropping to the floor while awaiting the necessary treatment on the surface of the board or after treatment and during the completion of the ironing of the article; and with this object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying the invention applied in the operative position to an ironing board.
Figure 2 is an inverted plan view of the same.
Figure 3 is a. sectional view on the plane indicated by the line 33 of Figure 2.
Secured to the undersurface of an ironing board 10 of the conventional type are base plates 11 upon which are pivotally mounted as at 12 bracket arms 13 provided with means 1 1 for the engagement of a webbing 15, preferably in the form of an open ended bag or hammock, as shown, which is thereby held with its open upper side parallel with and adjacent to the side edge of the ironing board in position to receive the portions of a large garment or article which is being ironed but of which only a portion can be accommodated on the surface of the board at one time. The bracket arms which extend transversely from the side edge of the ironing board are provided with terminal notches 16 for engagement with lugs or stops 17 on the base plates to lock the arms against the swinging movement toward each other so as not to be displaced by the weight of an article in the bag or hammock but permitting of folding movement of the bracket arms under and within the contour of the ironing board when the bag or hammock is detached therefrom so as to provide for compact folding for storage purposes. To facilitate the folding operation of the bracket arms they are preferably provided with slots 18 for engagement with the pivot pins 12 so as to permit of a sliding movement of the arms to disengagethe notches 16 thereof from the lugs 17, and the portions of the base plates upon which said bracket arms are pivotally mounted are preferably offset as indicated at 11' from the plane of the board to accommodate the underlapping edges of the cover of the board, indicated at 19 and usually consisting of a linen surface over a blanket or padding of suitable thickness.
In. the construction illustrated the means provided for the engagement of the webs bing consists of reduced or neck port-ions 1 L formed in the arms 13 for the reception of loops 20 at the end edges of the webbing, said loops preferably being elastic to maintain a taut condition of the inner and outer edges of the webbing. Furthermore the webbing as shown may be provided with intermediate loops 21 adapted to be used when a hammock or bag effect of the webbing is not required as when handkerchiefs, socks or other small articles are to be sup-ported thereon either prior or subsequent to the ironing operation. v
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is The combination with an ironing board of bracket arms pivotally mounted upon the under surface thereof, said arms being provided with slots engaging pivot pins on the board and the projecting portions of the arms being provided with means for engaging a garment supporting webbing, said bracket arms being provided at their inner ends with notches, and stationary stop lugs for engagement by the notches.
In testimony whereof she affixes her signature.
Y FARRELL.
