Be it known that I, HARRY BARNowrrz, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Clasp, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to clasps and more particularly to a clasp designed for use in connection with garters, belts or other similar articles, an object of the invention being to provide a clasp in which it is practically impossible for the members to be accidentally disconnected, but which permits of ready connection and disconnection by pro-per manual manipulation.

A further object is to provide a clasp which may be so mounted with relation to the garter or other article that the metal of the clasp is held out of contact with the flesh, the stocking or other garment.

A further object is to provide a clasp of this character which can be manufactured and sold at a reasonably low price, which will be neat and attractive in appearance and which will most efficiently perform the functions for which it'is intended.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.

showing the position the clasp members r will assume on accidental contraction of the Figure 2 is a view in longitudinal section inany `approved manner so that, `at least, a portion of the material 5 is positioned back of the plate 1 to prevent contact with the stocking or flesh.

This plate 1 is preferably cut out as shown at 6 for lightness and also for ornamentation. The center of the plate l islaterally offset as shown at 7. This oset portion is circular in form and is made with a circular o-pening 8 to receive a hook 9 on the other clasp member 2. This hook 9 is made integral with a loop 10 and through this loop the other end of the garter or belt material is projected and secured in any approved manner. It will be noted that the hook 9 is of a width just slightly less than the diameter of the opening 8 and that the tongue or return bend portion 11 of the hook is of a length sufficient to allow it to pass freely through the opening 8. n

Figure 2 shows the normal position of the clasp members4 when in locked engagement. If 4the garter or belt `should be accident-ally contracted, the free end of the hook 9 will ride into or under the offset portion 8 and remain coupled to the plate member 1. As soon as the garter or belt is again expanded, the parts will return to the position shown in Figure 2.

To release one member from the other, the hook must be moved forward and then Vat a right angle, or a tilting action imoffset portion 7 performs a very important function. Not only does it house the inner end of the hook but it provides ample space for the hook to accommodate itself thereunder in the event of accidental movement or ordinary movement which might be imparted to the clasp and which would tend to release the hook, if the plate were liat.

The offset portion 7 with its opening 8 constitutes in effect an annular socket providing accommodation or housing for the end of the hook, requiring a manual manipulation `of the hook relative to the clasp to accomplish a release of the parts.

Various slight changes and alterations might be made in the general form of the parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth but consider myself at liberty to make such sliglif changes and alterations as fairly fall Within the spirit and scope of theyl appended claim.
