F. BARNOFSKY SAFETY RAZOR BLADE HOLDER Filed July 10, 1924 IN VEN TOR ofsfy; BY 2 I WITNESSES lh d Bar/z ATTORNEYS Patented July 7, 1925.
UNITED STATES l 1,545,388 PATENT OFFICE.
FRED BARNOFSKY, or none, TERRITORY or ALASKA.
SAFETY-RAZOR-BLADE HQ'LDER.
Application filed July 10,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED BARNOFSKY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Nome, in the Territory of Alaska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razor-B'lade Holders, of
equipped with a locking device which may be readily released by the pressure of the fingers for permitting ready removal of the blades.
This invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description, in view of theaccompanying drawing forming a part of the specification; nevertheless it is to be understood that the invention is not confined to the disclosure, being susceptible of .such changes and modifications which shall define no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal side view of a holder with a blade locked in position.
Figure 2- is a longitudinal vertical section through the shank of the holder.
Figure 3 is a view in perspective of the device for locking the blade in position on the holder. 7
Figure 4 is a l'an view of the blank from which the locking device is constructed.
Figure 5 is a plan view partly in section of the blade holder.
Referring more particularly to the draw ings, 1 designates a handle having a cylindrical shank "2, which is bifurcated to form legs 3 and l. The inner portions of the legs adjacent the slit 5 are cut away, as shown at 6, to form a seat for the upper end of a razor blade 7. The lower edges of the legs at the bottom of the seat 6 are substantially in alinement for rigidly gripping the blades. The extreme outer end, beyond the seat 6 of the legs, is cut away, as shown at 8, whereby the blades may be readily inserted between the legs and located in the seat 6. To aid in the 1924. Serial no." 725,2I8.
insertion of the blades the inner faces of the blades are flared, as shown at 9.
The outer faces of the legs adjacent their ends are provided with a reduced cylindrical portion 10 which is adapted to receive 'a sleeve 11 substantially rectangular in cross section. The outer faces of the legs adjacent their ends have raised curved portions 12 which are curved outwardly and lnwardly to form a rounded portion over whichthe curved ends 13 of a pair of tongues 14; ride. These tongues 14 are formed integrally with the sleeve 11 and are stamped from the blank 15 shown in Figure 4. The ends 16 of the blank are brought together and welded or soldered,
as may be desi'red.
A bar 17 has a reduced inner end 18 adapted to be received within a socket 19 formed longitudinally in the handle 1 and in line with the flat upper surface 20 of the shank 2. The rod 17 is flat and adapted to lie upon the flat surfaces 20 of the legs 3 and 4s and has its outer end inserted through the sleeve and bent outwardly and upon said sleeve as shown at 21 secured in any approved manner by welding or riveting to said sleeve. v
The legs 3 and d are provided with adjacent engaging lugs 22 between the outer end of thelegs and the seat 6 for a purpose which will be presently explained.
The operation of my device is as follows:
The sleeve 11 is removed from the position shown in Figures 1 and 5 by pressing upon the shoulders 23- formed by the curving of the tongues 14 when the curved portion 13 of the tongues will ride outwardly and inward ly upon the curved surfaces of the upstanding portions 12 of the legs. This will cause the sleeve 11 to move outwardly towards the end and will move the bar 17 and withdraw the projection 18 from the socket 19 of the handle. The legs may then be sufficiently spread apart to remove the blade 7.
In replacing the blade in its seat 6 formed between the legs 3 and 1, the legs are forced open and the blade inserted through the slotted portion 5 and into the seat 6 with the lower end 24 of the blade projecting from the shank 2. The ends of the legs are then inserted through the sleeve 11 with the bar 17 sliding upon the flat portions 20 of the legs until the reduced portion 18 of the bar 17 will seat within the recess 19 and the inner end of the sleeve 11 will engage the annular shoulder 25. Vhile the sleeve is moving over the outer free end of the legs 3 and 4 the sleeve is compressing the legs toward each other and forcing the projections 22 into rigid engagement and thereby locking the blade in position within the seat 6. The upper end of the blade 1s adapted to engage the bar 17 to prevent loss-of the blade between the legs.
lVhat I claim is:
1. A blade holder comprising a handle and a bifurcated shank, the legs of the bifurcated shank having their inner adjacent portions cut away to form a seat, the inner adjacent portions at their outer ends being cut away thereby forming inwardly projecting lugs, a sleeve adapted to receive the free ends of the legs and force the same inwardly towards each other, and tongues projecting from the 'sleeve and adapted to engage the outer ends of the legs.
2. A blade holder comprising a handle and a bifurcated shank, the legs of the bifurcated shank adjacent their free ends having an annular reduced portion, the legs beyond the reduced portion having a rounded enlargement, said legs being provided with a seat therebetween to receive a blade, a sleeve mounted on the annular reduced portion and provided with curved tongues engaging the rounded enlargement of the legs, pressure on the tongues causing said tongues to ride over the enlargements and release the collar from the legs.
3. A blade holder comprising a handle and a bifurcated shank, the legs of the bifurcated shank adjacent their free ends having an annular reduced portion, the legs beyond the reduced portion having a rounded enlargement, said legs being provided with a seat therebetween to receive a blade, a sleeve mounted 011 the annular reduced portion and provided with curved tongues engaging the rounded enlargement of the legs, pressure on the tongues causing said tongues to ride over the enlargement and release the collar from the legs, and a rod connected to the collar and straddling longitudinally the legs. 4. A blade holder comprising a handle tudinally the legs, the handle being provided with a recess, a projection on the rod adapted to be seated 111 said recess.
5. A blade holder comprlsmg a handle and a bifurcated shank, the legs of the bifurcated shank ad acent thelr free ends having an annular reduced portion, the legs beyond the reduced portlon having a rounded enlargement, said legs being provided with a seat therebetween to receive a blade, a sleeve mounted on the annular reduced portion and;
provided with curved tongues engaging the rounded enlargement of the legs, pressure on the tongues causmg said tongues to ride over ,the enlargement and release the collar from .the legs, lugson the lnner faces of the legs;-
projecting toward each other and adapted to be forced into engagement with each other by the sleeve on the legs.
6. A blade holder comprising a handle anda bifurcated shank, the legs of the bifur-- cated shank adjacent their free ends having an annular reduced portion, the legs beyond the reduced portion having a rounded enlargement, said legs being provided with a seat therebetween to receive a blade, a sleeve mounted on the annular reduced portion and provided with curved tongues engaging the rounded enlargement ofthe legs, pressure on the tongues causing said tongues to ride over the enlargement and release the collar from the legs, said tongues being formed integrally with the inner end of the sleeve bent forwardly and projecting beyond the outer end of said sleeve.
