"UNITED sTATi-:s PATENT HAROLD HAssELnoTH, oFGALvA, ILLINOIS.
, 1,545,317 OFFICE.
CIGARETTE AND MATCH HOLDER.
Application filed May 28, 1924. `Serial No. 716,473.
To all whom t may concern.'
'Be it known that I, HAROLD` HAssnLnoTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galva, in the county ofHenry and State of Illinois, have inventedn-ew and useful Improvements in Cigarette and Match Holders,`of which the following is a specification.
his invention relates toV special receptacles and has for its object the provision of a novel device particularly well adapted for use in automobiles or the like, for holding a package of cigarettes and a box of safetyV or other matches so that access may be had thereto very conveniently' by the driverV or other occupant of the car, the device obviating the necessity for fumbling in the pocketl for matches and cigarettes and having the further advantage of keeping them'fin' good condition. u
' 4An important object the provisionof a device ofthis character in which the package of cigarettes andthe 'matches are contained within a slidable drawer so constructed and arranged that upon application of upwardpressure to the bottom the drawer.
will automatically open the cover and hold the same open luntil it is actually presseddown.
A further object is the provision of a deinternally with a receptacle for ashes, burnt matches and cigarette stubs.
Another object is the provision of a device of this character whichowill be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, neat and attractive in appearance, easy `to install, positive in action, eiiicient and durable in service, and art.` l ",With the above and other objects and adthe details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in
Figure 1 is a top plan view ofthe device. i j Figure 2l is a front elevation.y
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view. l Figure l is a vertical section on vthe line i-41 of Figure 3 with the cover closed.
`Figure 5.' is a View taken on the same kline but showing the coveropen. Figure-6 is a section on vthe line 6*- 6` of Figure 3, with the cover closed.V
Figure 7 isa similar view` with the `also equipped a general improvement in the drawer pushed upwardly and tlie cover open, and
Figure 8 is a section taken on .substantially matches.` At one end this receptacle 15 is Y formed with a which engages over the upper edge of the partition 12 whereby to support the ashreceptacle properly within the casing. The partitionll is formed with a vertically extending dove-tailed slot 17 fora purpose to be described. n p f v For closing the top, I provide a cover 18 formed with depending ears 19 pivoted at 2() within the casing 10. ,Above the ash reeeptacle this cover is `formed with an elongated opening 21 which is surrounded by a, depressed portion 22 leading into an elongated channel 23 which is adapted to serve as a rest for a lighted cigarette. Owing to this construction, it will kbe readily apparent that a partlysm'oked cigarette may be laid upon the cover and will not'passthrough the opening 21 until it has burned down to a lconsiderable extent 'although it is of course apparent that if desired a partly consumed cigarette and also burnt matches or the like may be inserted .endwise through the opening 21 into the ash receptacle. Thev dcpressed 21 serves more orless as a vguide for conducting ashes and the "like into the opening.
- Slidable within the casing and closing the bottom thereof, with the exception ofy that part occupied by the receptacle 15, ,is a drawer structure formed as a plate 24 carrying an upstanding strip 25 which is dovetailed in cross section' and which fits within the dove-tailed slot 17. VAtfits upper end, this strip 25 is formed withan enlarged head 26 having a shoulder 27 adapted to engage against the rear edge of the opening 21`when the cover is in open position as illustrated in 4Figure 5. n This drawer or plate 24.-"cooperates with the'casing 10 to define acomhook shaped extension 16 portion 22 surrounding the opening l casing and this hole 32 serves partment for the reception of a package of cigarettes and also a box of matches either of the safety or of some other variety At one end of the drawer or plate isa thickened portion 28 from which rises a" lug 29 over the difference between the length of safety matches and ordinary matches. u
The back wall 14 ot the casing is formed with a pair of holes 30 and through which may be vpassed ysecuring screws orthelike f for holding the device` in position at any desired location within an automobile or other place` Access to the hole 3.0 ishad through a hole 32 formed iii the front wall of the i the additional purpose of permitting one to ascertain at a glance whether or not there ,is a package of cigaretteswithin the device. Access to the hole 3l is had through an elongated opening Blfornied in the front of the casing, which opening servesthc additional purpose of permitting the striking of matches yupon the abrasive surface, commonly provided 'on the shuck'ot safety match boxes. v l
Assuming that a package of cigarettes and a box of matches have been placed upon the drawer 25, it willbe apparent that ordinarilythey are protected by means/ of the cover 18 which is in closed ,ositi`on.4 4When the cover is closed and the ldrawer or plate 25is in its lowermostposition, the shoulder 27 on the head` 26. restsiipon the upperedg'e of the ash'receptacle 15 as clearly shown in Figure 4f.. .A i f y i Whenever the operator `desires to obtain a smoke, it ismerely Vnecessary that he `place his fingers underthe device and press ,up-` wardly upon the drawer or plate25, where upon .this drawer. or plate .will slide. verti# cally within the casing, the upper vend of the head 26 engaging the cover 1.8 and swinging it into open position.' lVhen the cov-er has been entirely opened, the shoulder 27V on the head will enter and engage within tlieopeiiing `2l in the cover and consequently hold .the drawer or plate 25 in its elevated position until it is actually released by swinging `the cover shut. As above` stated, the cover serves as a restforlighted cigarettes and has the openingv for permitting the passage of ashes and other refusematter intothe ash .receptacle provided for the purpose. Obviously, whenever it is so desired,- the ash receptaclemay be *removedV rand emptied.
From the foregoing description? @il .a
study of the drawings, itwill be apparent that I have thus provided a very simply constructed and attractive device for the purpose specified which will be highly eliicient and which will be very convenient in use. While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it isto be uiiderstood'that lv reserve the right to make such changes linthe form, kconstruction and arrangement of parts as will not depart -from the spirit of the invention or the kscope of the subjoined claims.
