To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRYWESTERHOLD, a citizen of the United States, residingat Pender, in the county of Thurston and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new :and useful Improven'ients in Parturition Instruments,of which the following is a specification. 7 V.
This invention relates to instruments to facilitate parturition. 1 I
The primary objectzof thisfinvention-is the provision of an instrument constructed from a humanitarian standpoint to facilitate parturition, being particularly well adapted for use on dumb animals, such as sows, sheep, and the like.
A further object of this invention is the provision of an instrument of the above mentioned character, by which parturition may be facilitated, Without injury to the mother or to the young, being so constructed that the same may be utilized for easy delivery independent of whether the young is delivered head foremost or feet foremost.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following detailed description.

Figure 3 is a fragmentary cross sectional view of a portion of the parturition instrument, showing a joint thereof so constructed that there will be no liability of injury whatsoever to the mother or to the young, incident to a parturition operation.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown but the preferred embodiment of this, invention, the letter A generally designates the improved device, which is preferably constructed of medium gauge wire, of inherent rigidity, providing a straight handle portion 9, having an e1ongated substantially oval shaped loop 10 bent at the forward end thereof, the arcuate sides 11 and 12 of which loop, for their major lengths, are in the same plane; the arcuate forward or tip portion 13 of the loop 10 being offset in a plane disposed at an obtuse angle with respect to the plane in which the majorflengths ofthe sides 11- and12 lie. It is to. be :notedthat thefree end of the wire in theprovision of the loop 10 is bent, asat 15, for aseries of eonvolutionsabout the most forward end of the straight handle 9, and this joint, including the series of. cone volutions, is sealed by means of a substantially oval shaped lead onmetal'casing 16 having exteriorly smooth orconveX surfaces as to; eliminate all sharp corners whatsoever at the juncture of the loop 10 with the handle9.
-. .At itsoppositepr rear 'end,." the. straight V handle portion 9 is provided with a relatively smaller loop 20 which may be elongated or oval shaped, but the sides and ends" of which are in the same plane; the opening 21 provided by this loop 20 being materially smaller than the opening 22 provided by the forward or elongated loop 10. Thejoint 24 provided at the juncture of the loop 2O with the handle 9 is exactly identical with the joint described for juncture of the loop 10 with the handle 9, and is formed by spirally winding the free end of the loop 20, as at 25, about its adjacent handle portion 9, and sealing these convolutions by a lead casing 26 of identical construction with the casing 16. v
For ordinary parturition, the large loop 10 is used, by slipping the same over the head of the young to be delivered; the same being particularly effective in this respect incident to the fact that the end or tip 13 is offset to permit the same to have a snug grip upon the nape of the young, or at the rear of the skull, so that the operator may aid parturition by simply pulling upon the instrument A or by pressing the head of the young with one hand and pulling upon the instrument Awith the other. This type of instrument is more effective than the hinged forceps heretofore used, as the same is more compact andis more humanitarian, in that there are no crossing parts or abrupt junctures to injure the mother or young, and incident to its construction takes but little space to effect an operation.
The instrument A may also be effectively used for delivering the young when parturition takes place with the feet of the young foremost. In this case, the loop 20 will be used, the same being hooked over the legs of the young to be delivered. In the main,
