To all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that 1, JAN Mourns, a citizen of Poland, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in looks and more particularly tothe type of locks commonly used to secure the doors of dwellings and like buildings, the lock being of the permutative or combination variety.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a lock operable from the inside with entireease, but capable of battling attempts of opening from the outside without knowledge of the combination.
Another purpose is to produce a lock which effectually resists attempts at picking or other manipulation by an unwarranted person.
A further aim is in the provision of a neat appearing, compact lock composed of few and simple elements, cheaply constructed and readily assembled.
These and like other objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shownin the annexed drawing, forming part of this disclosure, and in which z Figure 1 is a side elevational view ofa lock made in accordance with the invention.

Referring more in detail to the drawing, the numeral 10 designates the element to which the lock is secured, asan ordinary hinged door, to the inner side of which is attached a rectangular casing 11. having marginal outstanding flanges 12 on its sides and rear, these flanges being provided with holes to receive screws 13, which pass through the casing plate 14: into the material of the door as shown.
A plain rectangular bolt 15, havingthe usual bevelled extension 16 is slidably contained in a slide-way 17 fixed in a plate 1% and fixed to the inner side of the bolt, near its rear end, is a pin18 to which one end of a coiled tension spring 19 is engaged, the other end or" the spring being looped around a pin 20 fixed. in the plate 1 1, the spring operating to normally force the bolt outwardly into position to engage a keeper, not shown.
. Also fixed in the bolt 15 is a pin 21 to which is attached one end of a flexible chain 22, the other end of which is engaged with a crank 23 formed on the inner end of a spindle 24 rotatable in the outer wall or face of the casing 11 and movable by a knob 25 on the outer end of the spindle.
From this construction it will beapparent that the bolt may be withdrawn from the inside of the door by merely turning the knob 25 and upon its release the bolt is noved outwardly by the spring 19.
An inner casing 26 is secured to the plate 14 and fixed in the outer wall of the casing 26 and plate 14 is a post 27 on which is fulcrumed'a lever 28, one end being in contact with the pin 21 on the side towards the bevelled end of the bolt and the otherend upturned, as at 29, and drilled to receive one end 30 of a spring coiled around the post 27, the other end 31 of thespring being bent at a right angle upward to extend through an arcuate slot 32 in the outer wall of the casing 26.
The end 31 of the spring is engaged by a link 33 pivoted to a crank pin 34 fixed in a disc 35 secured to the squared end of a spindle 36 which extends outward through the plate 14, door 10 and a fixed circular plate 37 having an index mark 38 on its outer surface.
A dial 39 having a twirling knob 40 is fixed on the end of the spindle 36, the dial being provided with numerals 41 which may be brought into registration with the mark 38.
Loosely mounted on the spindle 36 are a pair of spaced discs 42 and 42 having fixed between them a heavy ring 43 open at 4: 1 and adjacent the edges of the opening is an inwardly projecting lug 45.
A pin 46 is fixed in the spindle 36, this pin extending outwardly a suflicient distance to engage the lug and thus communicate motion to the ring 13, to bring the space or opening 44 into register with a roller 47 at the end of an arm 48 attached to the lever 28 and guided in a bracket 49 fixed on the plate 14 adjacent the ring 48. 1
Thus it may be seen that by properly manipulating the knob 40, the ring 43, which normally resists the entrance of the roller carried arm, may be brought into position to receive it and thus permit the lever 28 to turn on its fulcrum and retract the bolt.
Such entrance is further prevented by a pair of spring bands 50 and 51 having openings 52 and 53, the bands tensionally adhering to the ring to rotate with it except as prevented by lugs 54 and 55 formed onythe bands respectively and adapted to contact with a post 56 set in the: plate 14. f
If the knob i0 is turned in one direction. one of the lugs, as 5% will strike the post 56 and slip on the ring 43 until the dial39 has i been turned a definite part ofarotation dial which corresponds with the position of I corresponding to one of the points 'on the the band opening 52 and causing it to register with the ring opening 44.
' Upon rotating the knob in a reverse direction the band 50 will move with thering, maintaining the opening 44 accessible, and the other band 51 may then be maneuvered into a position so that its opening will register with the opening in the ring, at which time the crank 34 Will pull the lever to its utmost position and move the bolt back into thelock casing.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a simple and easily operated keyless lock has been described, by which a known combination actuated by the knob, will positively lock or unlock the bolt.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A keyless lock comprising a casing, a bolt slidable therein, means for normally projecting said bolt outwardly, a lever to retract said bolt, a spring operating to move said lever to retract the bolt, an arm on said lever, a ring having an opening to receive said arm, and permutative means for actuating said ring. c
2. A keyless lock comprising a casing, a bolt slidable. therein, means for normally projecting said bolt outwardly, a lever to retract said bolt, a spring operating to move said lever to retract the bolt, an arm on said lever, a ring having an vopening to receive said arm, a pair of spring bands frietionally encircling said ring and movable to cover the mentioned opening, and dial operated means for clearing said bands from theopening.
3. A keyless'lock comprising a casing, a bolt sli'dable therein, means for normally projecting said bolt outwardly, a lever to retract said bolt, a spring operating to move said lever to retract the bolt, an arm on said lever, a ring having an openmg to receive said arm, a spindle on which said ring is loosely axially mounted, a pin in said spindle adapted to rotate said ring, resilient bands encircling said ring,.said bands having openings registrable with the opening in said ring, projections in' said bands, a postagainst which said projections may make contact, and a dial controlling the move- 1-7;
ments of said ring and bands.
