LOCK WITH CYLINDER LOCK CONTROLLED DOGGING MEANS Filed Sept. 10, 1954 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 ATTD R N EYS United States Patent LOCK wrrn CYLINDER LOCK CONTROLLED Y `DOGGINGMEANS y'iliis invention relates to door locks, particularly of the push-,button type, which buttons in a face plate on the` edge of a door are pressed inwardly to lock and unlock thel conventional locking elements of a door, and .in particular, a lock of the push-button type in which the push buttons are replaced with a cylinder lock whereby the conventional locking elements are locked and unlocked with a key that replaces the push buttons.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a lock that isv particularly adapted for business establishments, such as stores and the like, where the front door is locked after closing hours and is only adapted to be opened by customers or employees leaving by the front door.
p In numerous instances, and particularly in stores, banks and the like, buttons in the edges of doors are pressed inwardly to lock the doorswhereby the doors are adapted to be opened only from the inside and invariably a customer, opening the door to leave the premises, will snap the lock tothe 'unlocked position as he passes through the door. By this means, the door is unlocked and employees remaining in the bank or the like continue to work with the feeling that the door is locked. With this thought in mind, this invention contemplates a door lock of the pushbutton type'wherein-the conventional lock bolt is held by a-'latch' operated-by a key and in which the latch Vis only adapted to be actuated to release the lock by a key.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide a key-actuated latch for preventing operating of a door lock bolt after the door is locked whereby it is necessary to use a key to open the door from the outside.
Another object of the invention is to provide a keyactuated latching device for retaining locks of the pushbutton type in locked positions in which the latch is adapted to be incorporated in locks now in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a keyactuated latch for door locks to replace the conventional push buttons in which Ithe latch assembly is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view, the invention embodies a conventional door lock casing having a face plate with a lock bolt extended through an opening therein and having a square door knob shaft extended therethrough, a key-actuated cylinder lock having a latch bar extended therefrom positioned in the casing and extended through an opening in the face plate and a cam having a notch therein mounted on the door knob shaft and positioned whereby the notch is adapted to receive the latch ofthe key-actuated cylinder lock.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is an elevational view showing a face plate mounted on the edge of a door with upper and lower parts of the door and enlarged sections of the door knobs broken away, said view showing the improved cylinder lock of this invention incorporated in the face plate.

Referring now to the drawings, wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts, the improved door lock of this invention includes a key-receiving cylinder 10 retained in a housing 11 with a deformable annular lip 12 and having pins 13 actuated by springs 14 in grooves in a key 15 whereby the pins are adapted to be positioned to permit rotation of the cylinder 10, an end 16 of the cylinder 10 having a pin 17 extended therefrom and eccentrically positioned in relation to the center of the cylinder 10, a slide 18 having a finger 19 adapted to be positioned, selectively, in slots 20 and 21 ofa wall 22 of an outer casing 23, a latching bar 24 carried by the cylinder housing 11 and adapted to extend into a notch 25 of a cam 26 on a sectional door knob shaft 27, a conventional lock bolt 28 and a rotatable key plug 29 of a cylinder lock that is mounted in a lock casing 30 having a face plate 31.
The key-receiving cylinder 10, which is mounted in the housing 11, is provided with a key slot 32, and with the cylinder in the position shown in Figure 4, the key 15 is adapted to be removed and replaced. The pins 13 prevent the lock being actuated by a key other than that for which the latch is set. With the lock in the position shown in Figure 4, wherein the finger 19 is retained in the slot 21'by a spring 33, the latching bar 24 is in the released position and the door is adapted to be opened and closed with the door knobs in the conventional manner. In this position, the housing 11 is retained extended by springs 34 and 3S positioned against the inner end of the outer housing 23.
By turning the key 15, the pin 17, which extends into a slot 36 in the slider 18, is actuated through an arc of degrees, whereby the pin 17 moves from the position shown in Figure 5 to that shown in Figure 6, and the slider 18 is moved upwardly with the finger 19 withdrawn from the notch 21. With the parts in this position, the key-receiving cylinder and housing 11 are pressed inwardly until the linger 19 registers with the opening 20 whereby the lock cylinder is turned over moving the pin 19 into the slot 20 of the lower wall 22 of the outer hous- In this movement, the latching bar 24 moves into the notch 25 of the cam 26, as shown in Figure 3, making it impossible to retract the lock bolt 28 with the sectional door knob shaft 27.
'By this means, a door knob on the outside of a door and which is carried by a hub 37 is locked and the knob on the inside -which is carried by the hub 38 is free to actuate a lock bolt or latch 28 with the cam piece 39 that is retained in position by a lug 40 on the top 41 of the lock case 30.
The cam piece 39 is retained in position on the lug 40 with a `spring -42 that is retained between a lug 43 on the outer housing 23 and a lug 44 on the case 41.
The lower end of the .cam piece 39 is positioned to engage an arm 45 on the end of a stem 46 of the lock bolt 28 with the stem extended through a bearing 47 and a roll back 48 on the key plug 29 of the conventional cylinder lock is also positioned to engage a projection 49 on, the lower end of the arm 45 whereby the lock is adapted to be opened from `the outside by a key insertable in the key plug 29. t
The parts are assembled as shown and described with the inner lock housing 11 positioned to extend through an opening 50 in a hub 51 of the face plate 31 and the face plate is also provided with an opening 52 for the lock bolt or latch 28 and openings 53 and 54 for mounting screws 55 and 56, respectively.
The lock cylinder Zltl is retained in the inner housing 11 with the annular lip or flange 12 and, as illustrated in Figure 4, the inner housing 11 is retained in the outer casing 23 and face plate 31 with a shoulder 57 that is positioned to engage the inner surface of the hub 51 of theiace plate.
The cylinder lil is also retained in position with a pin 58 mounted in an opening 59 in the inner housing 11 and extended into an annular groove 60 in the outer Isurface of the `cylinder 19.
The parts are so arranged that, upon rotating the lock cylinder with the key 15 with the parts as shown in Figure 3, the inner housing 11 with the latching bar 24 is adapted to be withdrawn from the position shown in Figure 3 and moved to the position shown in Figure 4 whereby the ringer 19 is extended into the slot 21 and with the parts in this position the door is adapted to'be opened and closed and also locked in the conventional manner. When it is desired to actuate the latching device, Whereby the door is locked to prevent opening thereof from the outside, except as with a key, the cylinder 16* is rotated -with the key 15 withdrawing the iinger 19 and, with the linger 19 withdrawn, the inner housing 11 is pressed inwardly until the finger 19 registers with the slot 2t) whereby the lock cylinder is rotated by the key 15 With the iinger 19 extended into the slot 20 and with the latching bar 24 extended into the notch 25 of the cam 26. By this means, the device is positively locked to prevent opening the door from the outside and the locking means is adapted `to be released, only, with a key inserted in the key slot 32.

What is claimed is:
`In a lock, a lock case provided with a face plate, a lock bolt extending through said face plate, a housing in said lock case, a cylinder arranged in said housing and said cylinder being provided with a key slot, there being an annular groove in Isaid cylinder, a pin engaging said annular groove, an annular lip on said housing, said pin and groove and lip adapted to retain the cylinder in the housing, a plurality of spring pressed pins in said cylinder and housing coacting to prevent rotation of 4said cylinder relative to said housing, fa pin extended from the inner end of said cylinder, a casing slidably supporting said housing and lsaid ycasing being provided with spaced apart slots, springs engaging the inner end of said casing and positioned between the casing and housing, a slider in said housing having a finger adapted to be selectively positioned in said slots, there being a slot in said slider for receiving the pin on the inner end of said cylinder, a spring for retaining the nger in the selected slot in said casing, a latching bar carried by said housing and movable with the housing, a sectional doorknob shaft having a cam provided with a notch for receiving said latching bar, a cam piece in said lock case, a lug on top of said case, a spring member arranged in engagement With said cam piece, said lug and spring member coacting to retain said carn piece in position, an arm engaging the lower end of said cam piece, a stem extending from said lock bolt and secured to said arm, a bearing having said stem extended therethrough, and a shoulder yfor retaining said housing in said casing.
