UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED E. BRUNS, 01 NEW YORK; N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO METAL PACKAGE CORPORA- TION OF NE'iV YORK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
COMBINED BOX COVER AND IICTUR-E FRAME.
Application filed March 20, 1924. Serial No. 700,498.
Be it Known th t I, ALFRED BRUNS, a eiti'en of the United States, and a resident of Ken York, in the county of New York and State t New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inlCombined Box Go ''ers and Picture Frames, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to boxes or containers and more particularly to the constructions of the covers therefor. I
The invention has for its object the production of a box cover of simple construction which shall be adapted to be used as a picture frame when so desired. Although it not to be so limited in its application the invention is peculiarly adapted to sheet metal boxes for candy or other commodities.
To the above ends my invention consists in the novelv box cover and picture frame hereinafter more particularly described and then specified in the claims.
in the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a box with cover made. according to my invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the rear side of the cover.
F is a section taken through the cover.
Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the support or stand for the cover the cover being shown in dotted lines.
Referring in detail to the several figures of the drawings:
1 indicates the outer wall or front face of a hollow cover which may be bellied or pressed outwardly if so desired as shown in Fig. 3, and which is preferably formed of sheet metal. Said wall 1 is provided with an oval or other shaped opening 2 therein surrounded by a bead 3 formed as an integral part of the wall 1 and which provides a reinforcement for the edge of the opening well as enhancing the appearance of the device.
The rear wall 4 of the cover and the end walls 5 and side walls 6 are preferably formed of one. piece of metal, said rear wall 1 being depressed toward the front wall if so desired, as shown in Fig. 3. The end walls 5 and the side walls 6 are provided with an outwardly extending flange 7 over which a flange 8 of the front wall is bent to secure the parts together, the flanges 7 and 8 providing an overhanging bead adapted .to engage the upper edges of the side and end walls of the b0 body 9 when the cover is applied to said box body as shown in Fig. 1. W'hen'in position the end walls 5 and side walls 6 of the cover will frictionally engage the inner sides of the walls of the box body as usual in this type of construction of boxes.
One of the end walls 5 of the cover is preferably provided with a slot 10 therein through which may be inserted behind the opening 2 to cover the same a transparent plate 11 such as glass. "A. photograph or any suitable picture 12 may also be inserted behind said plate through said opening whereby said photograph or picture will be visible through the opening in the wall 1. For holding the glass and photograph in proper position and in engagement with each other and with the inner surface of the front wall 1, I may employ a leaf spring 13, the ends of which extend through suitable slots cut or formed in the rear wall 4 as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. r
14 indicates a stand or other support which is preferably made of wire bent in the shape shown in Figs. 2 and 4. The base of said stand is provided with a-projectionor loop 15 adapted to enter and be frictionally held within an opening 16 in the rear wall 1. The ends of said wire stand are also looped as shown at 1 7 andthen bent outwardlyand horizontally to form pintles .18 removably engaging with ears 19 punched or otherwise formedwithin the rear wall 1.
When the boX 9 with its contents and with the cover applied thereto is shipped, the stand 14 is approximately parallel with the rear cover 41 or is in the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3 with the projecting loop 15 frictionally engaging within the opening 16 to hold the stand in a position in which. it will not interfere with the contents of the box, the fact that the rear cover 4 is depressed also serving to prevent the stand or its lower end from being an obstruction to.
the contents. The cover may be used at any time as a picture frame by disengaging the projecting loop 15 from the opening 16 and swinging the stand outwardly on its pintles 18 as shown in 4, wherebythe cover will be supported in an upright or slightly inclined position as shown. The stand 1 1 may readily be entirely removed from the cover by manually forcing the ends thereof towards each other to disengage the pintles 18 from the ears 19. v
I The invention may be used to advantage for advertising purposes as the manufacturer of the contents of the box may place an attractive advertisement of the contents within the cover. It may'also be used advantageously by a purchaser who may, if he desires, insert his photograph within the cover and send away the box with its contents as a gift. 4 e
The invention is not limited to the precise details of construction shown and described, but various modifications thereof may be made without departing from the spirit thereof as set forth in the appended claims.
What I claim as my invention. is
1. A' combined box cover and display frame having means for engagement with a box body and comprising a hollow member having front, rear, side and end walls connectedtogether with an opening in the front wall thereof and a stand for supporting said member on one edge thereof.
2. A combined box cover and picture frame comprising a hollow member adapted to engage and close, a box body and having front, rear, side and end walls connected together, said front wall having an opening therein, a slot in said member to permit the insertion of a transparent plate behind said opening and a detachable stand on the rear wall of said member whereby said member may be supported on one edge thereof.
3. The combined box cover and picture frame adapted to interfit and close a box body comprising a hollow member having front, rear, side and end walls connected together with an opening in the front wall thereof, said member being provided with a slot for the insertion of a transparent plate behind said opening, means .for retaining said plate in'engagement with theinner face of'said front wall and a stand for support: ing said member on one edge thereof.
' 4. A combined box cover and picture frame comprising a hollow member having front, rear, side and end walls adapted to interfit and engage the inner surfaces of the bers engaging within said ears.
5. A combined box cover and picture frame comprising a hollow member adapted to interfit with a box body and provided with an opening in a wall thereof, means in said member permitting the insertion of a plate covering said opening, a detachable wire stand engaging said member for supporting said member to one end, thereof and means for holding said stand in inoperative position. V
6. A combined box cover and picture frame comprising a walled enclosure adapted to interiit with and close a box body, the rear wall of said enclosure having a portion thereof sunk with respect to the body of said enclosure, and supporting means mounted in the sunk portion thereof.
7. A combined box cover and picture frame comprising a walled enclosure adapted to cover and interfit with the walls of a box body and provided with a picture or York and State of New York, this 18th day of March A. D. 1924;.
