Be it known that I, PAUL A. BERNHARDT, a citizen of the United States, and resident of ll/Iilwaulree, in the county of Milwaukee and State of lVisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in ventilators, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying dra-wings, which are a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in ventilators, and more particularly to ventilators for vehicle storm windows.
I It is one of the objects of the `present invention to provide a ventilator for railroad car storm or outer windows and arranged so that the same will not interfere with the operation of the inner windows.
A further object of the invention is to provide a ventilator of the class described of very compact form so as not to extend ma.- terially beyond the surfaces of the window glass.
A further object of the invention is to provide a ventilator of the class described having an adjustable shutter to regulate the amount of air admitted.
A further object of the invent-ion is to provide a window ventilator of very narrow and compact form arranged so as not tov project beyond the surface of the window frame, thereby permitting windows so equipped to be piled one on the other to economize in space in storing and shipping.
A further object of the invention is to provide a window shutter which is of very simple` construction, is strong and durable, is inexpensive to manufacture, and is well adapted for the purposes described.
IVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the improved window ventilator and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claim, and all equivalents thereof.
In the accompanying drawing in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the views:
Fig. 1 is a front view of the improved window ventilator shown mounted in a portion of a window;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 only showing the rear of the ventilator;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1 and on a larger scale; and
Fig. 4 is a view of the ventilator mounted in a window, the shutter being open.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing it will be seen that the numeral 8' indicates a window glass mounted in a frame 9. The portion of the glass of the window to receive the ventilator is formed with a circular aperture 10` to correspond with the circumference of the ventilator.
The ventilator is ,circular in form and comprises two parts, a male member 11 ,and a female member or ring 12. The male member 11 has a rim 13 and an inner depressed portion 14, the outer surface of which is formed with screw' threads 15. The depressed portion 14 of the member 11 is provided with a plurality of openings 16 which can be opened or closed by means of a circular shutter member 17 which is rotatably connected to the member 11 by means of a pin or bolt 18. Said shutter member 17 is also formed with a plurality of openings 19 corresponding in size, shape, and spaced relation with the openings 16. Thus, when the shutter member is rotated on the pin 18 as an axis, the shutter openings 19 can be brought into or out of registration with the openings 16 to admit or shut out air. One of the openings 16 is formed with indented portions 20 at each end to engage a pin 21 projecting from a face of the shutter member. By this means, the turning movement of the shutter member in both directions is limited. It should be observed that the hub portion 22 of the shutter member and the pivot bolt 18 do not project beyond the level of the rim 13, so that the device will be narrow and compact. Also,the shutter member is formed with radial ribs 23 by which means the shutter can be grasped to facilitate the manual turning thereof.
The male member 11 is positioned within the glass aperture 10y so that the rim 13 will be adjacent the inner surface of the glass to expose the depressed portion 14 and per-v mit access to the shutter. The female member or ring 12 is positioned adjacent the outer surface of the glass and has a screw thread engagement with the member 11. Vasher or filler members 24 and 25, formed of rubber, fiber, or the like are positioned on opposite sides of the glass between the same and the members 11 and 12 to protect the glass and permit tight engagements between said members 11 and 12.
It is evident that the improved ventilator is easily operated to admit air through a window. Itk is especially designedjfor use in vehicle outer windows where the limited space requires a narrow and compact ornr of ventilator, but it isv'equally well adapted for use in theater ticket booths, automobiles, and the like.
