To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN E. BARNEY, citizen of the United States, and resident of New Rochelle, in the county of lVestchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to typewriting machines and more particularly to shielding and protecting means for aportable typewriting machine in which parts are shifted from a compact toan expanded position for use.
The main object of my invention, generally stated, is to provide inexpensive and highly efficient means of the character specified.
To the above and other ends which will hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the features of construction, arrangement of parts, and combinations of devices set forth in the following description and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

I have shown my invention embodied in the present instance in a Remington portable machine in which the invention may be readily incorporated with but little change in the existing structure of said machine.
t should be understood, however, that the invention is not confined to embodiment in such machine.
In the Remington portable machine, printing key levers 1 are fulcrumed at 2 and are received in an inner frame 3 surrounded by an outer sheet metal frame 4. Each key lever 1 is operatively connected through a link 5, sub-lever 6, link 7, sub-lever 8 andintermeshing gear segments 9 and 10 with the associated type bar 11. The type bars are all pivoted on a pivot wire 12 to strike downwardly from their upright position for use against the top of a platen 13. The platen is mounted on the carriage 14 in the usual manner to travel from side to side of the machine.
Type bars are adapted to be simultaneously turned on their pivots from a compact, recumbent, substantially horizontally disposed position, shown in Fig. 3, to an upright expanded position for use, indicated in Fig. 1. The means employed to control these pivotal movements of, the type bars to and from expanded position comprises a finger piece 15 extending to the outside of the machine and carried by a crank arm 16. This crank arm is secured to a rock shaft 17 which extends acrossthe machine and is mounted at its ends in bearing openings in the. inner frame 3. Two additional crank arms 18 are fixed to the rock shaft and are pivoted to links 19 which in turn are pivoted, at 19 at their upper'ends to bracket cars 20 fixed to a plate-like member 21 by which the type bars are elevated and loweredv around their pivots. This member. 21 may be made of sheet metal and is in the nature of a cover plate and type bar rest carrying a felt pad '22 against which the type bars bear in both expanded and compact positions. The member 21 carries depending substantially vertically disposed arms 23 at opposite sides thereof, said arms working in grooved guide-ways in fixed upright guide members 24. In this manner themember 21 is supported and guided for vertical movement when the rock shaft 17 is turned by thefinger piece 15.
In accorda-ncewith my present invention, the forward edge 25 of the memberv 21 is curved and extends beyond the free ends of the type bars and adjacent to a correspond. ingly rear curvededge 26 of a top plate 27 secured to the machine frame. The forward curved edge of the member 21 is provided with a depending vertically arranged flange or apron 21 located adjacent to the inner curved edge or wall 26 of the top plate 27. When the member 21 is lowered as shown in Fig. 3, the top thereof is located a considerable distance below the highest part of the top plate 27, but is nevertheless surrounded by the curved edge or wall 26 of the top plate. When the member 21 is elevated, as shown in Fig. 1, the lower end of the apron or flange 21 is below the upper edge of the top plate and within and adjacent to the curved wall 26 thereof. It will be understood therefore that the apron '21 at all times substantially closes the space between the member 21 and the top plate 27 and prevents the admission of dust to the underlying actuating connections between the key levers and type bars and other operating parts of the machine. Therefore this member 21 and its flange 21 together with the top plate 27 and the frame of the machine,
incloses and houses many of the working parts of the machine; housing and guarding them against the admission of dust and hiding them from view, this being true whether the type bars are in the compact positionor in the expanded position for use. In the present instance I form the member 21 with a hollow bead 28 concentric with the front curved edge 25, said bead providing for inclosure within its carrying case.

In a machine of thejcharacter shown, it is necessary for the operator to reach over the system of type bars, when they are conditioned for use, to effect an adjustment or return movement of the carriage, or to ad just the'paper. :In the present instance I contemplate providing a finger piece 29 by which-the platen may be line spaced and the carriage returned by a single operation, and by a swinging movement of the lefthand of the operator from left to right and slightly forward. For the purpose of my present invention, it is unnecessary to illustrate the means controlled by theline spacing handle. Such means are to form the subject matterof a separate application filed Dec. 22, 1924, Sr. No. 7 57,545. In adjusting or returning the carriage, or adjusting the paper, one or the other or both hands of the operator might come in conflict with the end type bars of the system. Aside from any possibility of injury to, or bending of, the type bars, the hands of the operator may become soiled and possibly scratched or cut on the sharp corners of the type blocksat the ends of the system. Bymy present 1nvention, I overcome this difficulty by providing the type bar guards or shields hereinbefore referred to. Each shield is designated as a whole by thereference numeral 30 and preferably consists of a sheet metal member curved in cross section, especially at the outer end portion thereof so as not to present any sharp corners or edgeswith which the hands of the operator might come in contact. Each shield is pivoted near one end, at 31, to an ear 32 provided on an existing plate 38 secured to the fixed type bar segment M by a screw 35. The pivot 31 of each shield is located adjacent to the pivot V ofthe associated end type bar, as will be seen at the right hand side of A1. This is in order to enable'each shield to swing with its associated end type bar and maintain substantially the same relation thereto inthe recumbent and expanded position of each of said bars. Each shield extends lengthwise of, substantially parallel with and outside of the body portion of its associated type bar. It will be seen that the end type bars of the system flare outwardly at their type-carrying ends, and the outer end portion 36 of each shield is flared tocorrespond to the companion end typebar, and also is curved at 37 to pass over and around the ends of several type bars at the corresponding end of the system.
In order to cause the shields to move in unison with the type bars in their shifting movements to and'from expanded position, I operatively connect the shields with the means by which the type bars are thus shift-- ed. In the present instance this connection is effected byproviding a pin-andslot connection between the. member 21 and each Shlfild. Thus-, a bracket 38 is fixed to the member 21 at each side thereof and carries a shouldered headed screw or pin 39. The shank of each pin passes freely through a slot in and extending longitudinally of the associated shield 30. Therefore, when the member 21 is lowered, the shields 30 will be carried down around their pivots 31 and moved to a compact position corresponding to' the type bars, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. lVhen the member 21 is elevated, the shields 30 are moved to upright expanded position corresponding to the expanded position of the type bars, to protect the end bars of the system against the hands of the operator colliding therewith and to protect the hands of the operator from being soiled or injured.
In the present instance the arms 20, 23 and 38 are formed integral with a plate d1 riveted atACZ or otherwise secured to the member 21; the rivets 42 also securing the plate 43 for the pad 22 in place.-
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided simple and effective means for protecting working parts of the machine which may readily be embodied in a Remington portable machine without material modification of the existing structure Various changes may be made without departing from the invention as it is defined in the following claims.
IV hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a typewriting' machine, the combination of type bars mounted for movement from a compact position to an expanded position for use, and a guard or shield movable with said type bars from compact to expanded position and operative to protect a hand of the operator from colliding with the type bars.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination of type bars mounted for movement from a compact position to an expanded position for use, and'two guards or shields one located at each end of the system of type bars, said guards being movable with the type bars from compact to expanded position and operative to protect the hands of the operator from colliding with the type bars at both ends of the system. 3. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a system of type bars, shifting means for moving said system of type bars from a compact position to an expanded position for use, and type bar guarding or shielding means connected with and controlled by said shifting means and movable thereby with the system of type bars from compact to ex panded position and when in said last named position guarding the hands of the operatoragainst collision with the type bars at the ends of the system.
4. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a system of pivoted type bars, means for simultaneously shifting all of said type bars around their pivots from a compact position to an expanded position for use, type bar guarding means pivoted to move with the type bars in said moven ents thereof from compact to expanded position and'to guard both ends of the system when the type bars are in condition for use.

7 In a typewriting machine, the combination of a systemfof type bars, means for shifting said system of type bars from a recumb nt compact position to an expanded position for use, two type bar guards or shields one arranged at each end of the system or type bars, each guard extending substantially parallel with an end type bar and around and over the free end thereof, and means for operatively connecting said guards with said shifting means to be shifted thereby; 8. In a typewriting machine,- theco-mbination of a system of type bars, the end bars of the system having their type carrying ends flaring outwardly, means forshifting said type bars from a compact position to an expanded position for use, two type bar guards or shields one arranged at each end of the system of type bars and extending substantially parallel with said end type bars and flared to correspond thereto and extending around or over the free ends thereof, and connections between said guards and shifting means for causing the guards to shift in unison with the type bars.-

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a system of pivoted type bars shiftable around their pivots from a recunrbent compact position to an upright expanded position, a type bar rest, hand con-- guards or shields one arranged at each end of the system of type bars, each guard extending outside of and substantially parallel with an endtype bar and having a longitudinally extending slot therein, and pins carried by said type bar rest and extending into said slots in the guards tocause the guards to partake of the shifting movements of the type bars into and out of compact position.
10. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen carried thereby, a system of pivoted type bars movable around their pivots from a compact recumbent substantially horizontal collapsed position to an upright expanded position for use, from which latter position the type bars strike downwardly to impact against the top surface of the platen, and two type bar shields arranged at opposite ends of the system of type bars to protect the hands of the operator, each shield being pivoted adjacent to the pivot of an end type bar of the system to move therewith in the movement of the type bars to and from expanded position, means for simultaneously shifting all of said type bars back and forth from expanded to collapsed position, and actuating connections between said shields and said shifting means for causing the shields to partake of the said shifting movements of the type bars. 7

I11 a typewriting machine, the combination of a system, of type bars shiftable from a-collapsed to an expanded position for use, means for thus shifting the type bars, a type bar protecting shield arranged at one end of the system of type bars and comprising a sheet metal arm curved in cross section and extending throughout the length of an end type bar, means for simultaneously shifting the type bars to; and from expanded position for use, and means controlled thereby for correspondingly shifting said protecting shield.
12. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a system of type bars shiftable from a collapsed to an expanded position for use, including end type bars which are flared outwardly at the type carrying ends thereof, means for shifting said type bars as stated, a type bar protecting shield arranged at one end of the system of type bars and comprising a sheet metal member curved in cross section and extending substantially parallel with the body portion of an end type bar of the system and flared to correspond to the flared typecarrying end of said bar and projecting over the free end thereof, means for. shifting the type bars as stated, and intermediate connections between. said shifting means and shield for causing the shield to shift with the type bars in said shifting movements of the latter into and out of expanded position for use.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a system of type actions comprising pivoted type bars and keys and actuating connections for said type bars; and means for shifting said type bars around their pivots from compact to an expanded position for use comprising a shiftable type bar supporting plate thatoverlies said actuating connections and extend forward atleast as far as the free ends of the type bars; and a top plate of the machine which terminates at its rear edge just forward of the front edge of said shiftable supporting plate. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a system of type actions comprising pivoted type bars and keys and actuating connections for said type bars; and means for shifting said type bars around their pivots from compact to an expanded position for use comprising a shiftable type bar supporting plate that overlies said actuating connections and extends forward at least as far as the free ends of the type bars, a top plate of the machine which terminates at its rear edge forward of the front edges of said shift-able supporting plate and adjacent thereto, and a substantially vertically disposed flange that closes the space between said shiftable plate and top plate when the shiftable plate is shifted to expand the type bars.

Ina typewriting machine, the combination of the type bars, and means for shifting said type bars from a compact to an expanded positionincluding a shiftable plate that covers working parts of the machine, said plate having a depending flange extending substantially to and below parts of the frame of the machine to form there with a protecting housing for working parts of the machine when the type bars are expanded as well as when they are collapsed.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a series of type bars shiftable from a compact recumbent substantially horizontally disposed position to an upstanding expanded position for use, a top plate of the machine which terminates at its rear edge substantially at the free ends of the type bars when the latter are in recumbent position, and means for shifting the type bars as stated comprising a shiftable plate extending at its forward edge substantially to the rear edge of said top plate and provided with a depending flange or apron which closes the space between the top plate and said shiftable plate when the latter is shifted to expand the type bars.
17. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a series of type bars shiftable from a compact recumbent position to an expanded position for use, a top plate of the machine having its rear edge formed in a curve conforming substantially to the free ends of the type bars when the latter are in recumbent position, said rear edge of the top plate terminating near the free ends of the type bars when the latter are in recumbent position, and means for shifting the type bars as stated comprising a shiftable plate extending at its forward edge substantially to the rear edge of said top plate and curved to conform thereto and provided with a depending flange or apron which closes the space between the topplate and said shiftable plate when the latter is shifted to expand the type bars.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a system of pivoted type bars shiftable around their pivots from a recumbent compact position to an upright expanded position for use, key levers, intermediate actuating connections between said key levers and type bars, a top plate of the machine having a rear edge curved to conform substantially to the curvature of the free ends of the system of type bars when the latter are in recumbent position, said edge of the top plate terminating near the free ends of the type bars when they are in the recumbent position, and means for shifting the type bars as stated comprising a substantially horizontally disposed shiftable plate beneath the type bars and curved at its forward edges to conform substantially to said curved edge of the top plate and extending substantially thereto, said shiftable plate having a depending flange or apron at the forward curved edge thereof which closes the space between said top plate and shiftable plate when the latter is shifted to expand the type bars and which with the frame, top plate and shiftable plate houses and protects said intermediate actuating connections and other working parts of the machine.
