To ZZ 'wim/m vt may concern Be it known that l, Grenen F. Sonnrrnn, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of lillayne and State of ltLTichin'an, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Typewriters, of which the following` is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in typewriters in which are employed. a carriage movable in forward and reverse directions, a .combined platen and paper-feed roller carried by the carriage, mechanism for moving' the carriage forward during;` the writingg operation and mechanism adapted to be operated to turn the papei.-feed roller to the desired extent at the completion of each line of writing during the operation of the machine.
ln machines of this character the carriage is automatically moved forward during the writing operation and at the coniipletion of each line of writing' the carriage is manually returned or moved in the reverse direction; and during or immediately prior to the return of the carriage and by substantially the same manual operation the mechanism for turning' the paper-feed roller is actuated.
The carriage is located at the upper portion of the machine and the part which engaged by hand to move the carriage in the reverse direction and actuate the feed roller turning mechanism is located in the vicinity of the carriage and above the key board of the machine andvin such position that the operator is required to raise the hand and arm a considerable distance above the normal position for operating the keys of the ke),v board. The numerous times that this manual operation of the carriage of the machine fulfilled. by the operator in the course of a comparatively short period of time causes a strain to be placed upon the arm and hand resulting.,r not only in the fatigue caused thereby but also in the con* sumption of the time represented by the many up and down movements of the hand and arm during a work period.
The object of my invention is to eliminate the time required for raising and lowering the arm land hand for the carriage return operations and also to eliminate the ,fatigue resultingtherefrom; and l accomplish my .object by theprovision of a novel, simple and efficient mechanism bymeans of which the carriage may be returned and the paper feed-roller advanced after the completion Serial lN0. 53.6,34-1.

Vith the foregoing and related objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The typewriting machine illustrated in the drawings is of the well known Underwood7 type; and, referring to the drawings, 2 designates the frame of the machine, 4 the key board. 5 the longitudinally movable carriage mounted on the frame, 6 the combined platen and paper-feed roller carried by the carriage and 7 the pivoted member or lever which is manually operated to actuate the devices that turn or advance the roller 6 at the completion of the writing of each line. The carriage 5 is automatically moved forward or in the direction of the dotted line arrow, step-by-step, during the writingr operation and it is manually returned or moved in the reverse direction indicated by the full line arrow. The construction and operation of the parts thus referred to are common and well known and no detailed description or illustration thereof is deemed necessary herein.
Secured at its respective ends to the bottoms of the side members of the machine frame 2, is a plate or bracket 8. forming` in eifect, a part of the said frame; and fulcrumed at 9 on the plate 8 is a lever 10 which extends forwardly and lrearwardly from its fulcrum, and which is adapted to move horizontally beneath the key board 4l. 'I he forward end of the lever 10 is provided with a suitable handle ll by means of which it may be manually moved across the frontV of the key board 4 from the left hand side of the machine to or toward the right hand side thereof. The forward end portion of the lll lever moves beneath the plate or bracket 8 and it extends over a segmentalv bar or guard 12 which is secured at its respective ends to the bottom of the plate 8. rPhe guard- 12 is provided to resist any undue downward pressure upon the handle 11 or the forward end of the lever 10 during the manual operation thereof.
The rearward end portion of the lever 10 is connected to a small angle bracket 13 secured to the left hand end. of the carriage 5, by a yflexible member 14 which may be a cord, wire, chain or any equivalent thereof. .The member 14 extends. horizontally from the angle bracket 13 tol and around a pulley 15 which turns on a horizontal axis in a bracket 16 secured to the upper vportion of the right hand side of the machine frame 2. The member 14 extends downwardly fromy the pulley 15 to and around a pulley 17 which turns on a horizontal axis in a bracket 18 secured to the lower portion of the frame 2 beneath the bracket 16. The. member 14' extends from the pulley 17 to and around a pulley 19 which turns on a vertical axis and which is carried by the rearward end of the lever 10 and terminates in.a head 2O which is secured thereto. rlhe head 2O is also secured to one end of a long helical spring 21 which extends therefrom lto and around a pulley 22, carried by the forward end portion of the lever 10 and thence back toward the pulley 19 which has its other end secured at 23to thelever 10 d rllhe spring 21 forms, in effect, a continuation of theflexible member 14, and the spring` 21 is adapted to draw the head 20 and therewith the end of the member 14 connected thereto toward the pulley 22 to take up the vslack in the member 14 which otherwise would occur in the member, as will be hereinafter explained.
The head 2O is adapte-dto move back and forth between t-he pulleys 19 and 22?, the
head being drawn by the member 14 toward the pulley 19 and by the spring 21 toward the pulley 22; and, whenthe head 20 is drawn by the member 14 to a position in close proximity to the pulley 19,` the head 20 is adapted. to engage. a stopl 24 which projects from the lever 1() and arrests the movement of the head 20.
The carriage 5 isshown in the central position; that is to say, about midway between the limits of its forward and reverse movements; and, in this position of the carriage 5, the head 2O is' about midway of the ends of its path of travel between the pulleys 19 and 22. It will now be understood that if the carriage 5 be moved forward by the mechanismA of the machine under the influence of the operatio-n of the keys of the key board 4,y the spring 2K1 will draw the head `20 toward the pulley 2.2 and' thereby take up the slack inthe member 14 occasioned by the forward movement of the earriage 5. lt will also be understood that if the forward end of the lever 10 be moved from the normal position shown `in the drawings toward theiright hand side of the machine, the rearward end portion thereof will move away from the pulley 17 and the head 2() will be drawn toward the pulley 19 until the head 2O engages the stop 24; and,
during such movement of the head 20, the carriage 5 will be unaffected by the movement of the lever 10. After the engagement of the head 2O with the st op 24, the further movement of the forward end of the leverright to the extent that it is desired to move the carriage 5 in the reverse direction.
The spring 21 not only acts automatically to take up theslack in the member 14V but also, in so doing, it actsl automatically tov return the lever 10 to the normal position shown in the drawings, after. the forward end thereof has` beenmoved to any extent toward the right and released.
I shall now describe the mechanism for turning or advancing the paper-feed roller 6 during the reverse movement of the carriage 5 after the completion of each line of writing.
Secured to the upper portion' of the right hand side of the frame 2- isA an. anglek bar 26 which extends outwardly therefrom parallel -to the path of movement of the carriage 5.
The angle bar 26 has a longitudinal slot 27 formed therein for the reception of two screws 28 and 2 9v which penetrate. the same and connect a plate 30 on one Aside of the bar 26 and a bracket 31 on the other side of the bar 26 in a manner to guide the plate. 50 and bracket 31 and permit them tof be ad.- justed longitudinally of the bar 2 6. The screw 28 is provided with a suitable head by means of which it may be turned, and it adapted to serve as a clamping screw to draw the plate 30 andV bracket 31 together and clamp the bar 26,v between them toQhold the bracket 31 in different positions y,of lonlgitudinal adjustment on the .barv 2 6. The bracket 31 is` provided( with alongitudinally extending armv 32 having a vertically arranged bearing-plate 33 formed, on theA free end thereof., APivoted at 34 on the plate 33 is a stopy 35,v having aweighted` lower end which maintains it normally 'in the vertical position shown in Figure 2.'
The upper end of the stop 35 provided with a roller 36 arranged in the path of the forward arm 37 a lever 38 which is fulcrumed at 39 on a plate or bracket 40 on the carriage 5.
The rearward arm l1 of the lever 38 carries a roller 42 which is adapted to engage and move the member 7 when the lever arm 37 is moved in the direction of the arrow in Figure 1 The member 7 is connected to and operates the usual devices for turning or advancing the paper-feed roller 6, and, when the lever arm 37 is moved in the direction of the arrow, the member 7 is moved by the lever arm Lll to turn or advance the roller 6 to the desired extent, after the completion of a line of writing. Vlhen the carriage 5 is m-oved in the reversed direction after the writing of a line, the lever `arm 37, engages the stop roller 36 and is moved thereby in the direction of the arrow shown in Figure l to operate the member 7 to advance the feed roller 6; and upon the next succeeding forward movement of the carriage 5 the lever arm 37 engages the stop yroller 36 and tilts the stop 34E to permit the roller 36 to pass beneath the lever arm 37 without adecting the lever 38. The stop 35 is prevented from tilting by the engagement of its sideI below its pivot 34 with the end of the bracket arm 32, when the lever arm 37 engages the roller 36 during the reverse movement of the carriage 5. After the stop 35 is tilted by the lever arm 37 during the forward movement of the carriage 5, the stop 35 is returned to its nor-L mal or vertical position by its weighted lower end.
After the member 7 has been moved to turn the paper-feed roller 6 as previously described, it is automatically returned to its normal position shown in the drawings by the usual mechanism of the typewriter; and1 when the member 7 is thus returned, it automatically returns the lever 38 to its normal position, as shown in the drawings,
following its movement therefrom by the engagement of its arm 37 with the stop roller 36, as previously described. Movement of the lever 38 by the stop roller 36 during the forward movement of the carriage 5 is prevented' by the engagement of the lever roller 42 with the bracket 40.
lt will now be apparent from the construction and operation of the mechanism, as hereinbefore described, that it will be unnecessary for the operator to raise or lower his or her arm to either return the carriage 5 or to turn the paper-feed roller 6 after the writing of a line, and that these operations may be accomplished by merely moving the hand horizontally across the front of the key board 4 in engagement with the handle ll or end of the forward arm of the lever l0. After such movement of the lever l() to return the carriage 5 and advance the paper-feed r-oller 6, the handle ll or lever l0 is released and the spring 2l automatically returns it to the normal position shown in the drawing, as previously explained.
