; STGR-ING MECHANISM Fon. TYPE.
Original application iled January 6, 1917, Serial No. 140,989. Divided and this application filed July 10 all wiz-0m t may concern.:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR D. Snonsiir, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Chio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Storing Mechanism for Type, of which the following is a specification.
This inventionv relates to mechanism for holding and storing type.
Cne object of the invention is to provide an improved type storing or holding mechanism which permits the easy and rapid dis- 'tribntion of type thereto and setting of the type therefrom.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved storing mechanism for perforated type having a plurality of members, one for each character of type, around which the perforated type are stacked and means which support the members, but permit the distribution of type to them at one end and movement of the type from end to end thereof. 4
Another object of the invention is to provide a plurality of storing devices for type and improved means for supporting said devices, whereby the distributing and position ing of the type for setting is facilitated.
Other objects of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which my invention relates from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying' drawings.
For the purpose of illustration, I have, in the accompanying drawings, shown and herein described one form of mechanism embodying my invention.

Fig. 12 is a detail view showing the manner of setting type.
Fig. 13 is a detail view of the devices which control the operation of the supporting means for the storing bars.
Fig. 14 is a fragmentary view showing a slightly modified form of the invention.`
In the drawings, l. indicates a frame or support preferably comprising a pair of side members A, A, and a platform B connected at its opposite ends in any desired manner to the side members A, A. `The upper and lower ends of the side members A are preferably bent outwardly at right an gles, as shown at c, a, the bent ends a. serving as supports to which the opposite ends of the platform B may be secured and the bent ends a serving as feet on which the frame l rests.
C indicates a supporting member extending between the side members A in a plane below the platform B, and adapted to support the type T in stacked relationship, in the manner hereinafter set forth. The type T are each perforated or formed with an opening through its body, as shown in Figs. 11 and 11a. By reason of the fact that. l have heretofore used perforated typeon a rotatable printing drum, I have merely for illustrative purposes shown type having tapering sides. v
D indicates a series of bars or rods, one
for each letter, number and other character of the front of'type used, preferably arranged side by side, (but spaced from each other a suitable distance), and co-operating with the supporting member C to hoid or store the type as shown in Figs. 1 and 14. The barC is preferably provided with a rear wall c, which may be formed integrally with the supporting member C. 12 indicates a plate extending along and adjacent to the front edge of the bar or member C and provided with a series of partitions 12. which extend inwardly, their free ends preferably engaging the rear wall c. The plate 12 may be secured in position in any well known manner. As shown in Fig.
. device, indicated Vby `15.
9, the plate 12, ythe inwardly .extend-ing members or partitions 12 andthe rear wall o, cooperate to form pockets 12:l for the lower ends of the` stacks ot' type, but prevent them 4from moving laterally, exceptas hereinafter described. rIhe plate 12 is provided with ai;
series of openings or cut-away portions 18, one.i0r each pocket 12?, through which the lowermost type of each type stack .maybe moved in setting the type, as will beflater described. Below. `and centrally of each pocket, the wall ofthe supporti-ng member Gis cut awayorrecessed, .asy shown at 14: in Figs. 1, 9, 10 and 12,so. as to permit'the insertion or positioning of a typesetting The type settingV devicefmayfbe asuitable tool,.b.ut preferably it consists of a typeholding segment, such .as is `used orholding thetype T to the drum of .iaaprinting machine. The low-er freeendoteach rod D.is spaced. from the .bottom of .the adjacent poclieta distance more than thethiekness of a `single type Vvbut lless. than the thickness of two type. By this arrangement the lower most-type may Vbemoved laterally through the adjacentslot 13,but Vthe next se-tion of Y type above will'be held againstmovement bythemodD untillthe, lowermost type has beenremoved. and it then moves downward# ly onto' the bottom ofthe pocket. It will thusberseen that only one sectiono'f type,
theJlowermost -section in each-stack, can be removedat atime. The rods'D are preferably of varyingflengths -so' that their v'lower tree ends may terminate at suitable `distances `t`romth`e supporting, member C ac; cordingto thethielmess ot the type which eacl'rrodholds; likewise the slots '13 preferably vary -inlength to co-operate withrthe respeetiverods adjacent thereto. 4The lower free end of eaclrrod D is held substantially stationary or against swinging,` movement by engagement with the walls ot the type T which substantially fill the adjacent pocketV 12a. j

The abutments 2l are preferably arranged to support the type T at a point above and relative to the lower edge of the casing 22X, so that when thl lat-ter is placed over an arm 3 and upon the platform B (see Fig. 4) and then drawn horizontally toward the operative, the arm 3 will engage with and arrest the forwardmost type T, and cause it to move through the opening 24 as the horizontal movement of the casing 22X takes place. Each arm is preferably spaced relatively to the adjacent. rod D so' as to arrest it immediately above the rod with the openingl in the type T in alignment with the rod D. As a result of this arrangement, as soon as the type T is free of the casing 22X, it will ring itself on. the .rod and slide downwardly thereon until it is stopped by the rod supporting and engaging members 16a. Tf desired, the parts may be so arranged that the upper free end of eachrod D will extend partially through the forwardn'iost type T at the timeI the casing 22" is positioned over the adjacent arni 3 onto the platform B.
The pusher 23 preferably consists of an arm 23 loosely mounted on a shaft 23 carried by the back wall 22, a follower 23" which extends laterally from the free end of the arm 23 into the channel to enga-ge the rearinost type T and a spring 23C which tends to swing the pusher 23L about the shaft 23T", and maintain the forwardmost tvpe T against the abutments 24a. The spring 23c is preferably coiled around the stud or shaft 2t n. Uno end ofthe springv may be fired tofthe easing and its opposite end engages with the arm 23a and normally tends to swing the pusher about the shaft towards the abutments 241, thereby serving to push or move the type through the channel and maintain the forwardmost one thereof in engagement with the abutments. 231 indicates a stop preferably arranged to arrest the movement of the pusher at a point in line with the top of the opening 24.
The type T may be placed in the channel 22r in any suitable manner, but preferably the type is retained on a segment bar when the latter is disconnected from the printing drum. The segment 15 is transferred with the type T thereon to the channel 22f, after which the cover 22c ma-y be closed and the segment bar l5 removed endwise through the type and from casing 22X, the space between the abutments 24a readily permitting this operation.
T preferablyv provide means for holding the pusher 23 at the rear end of the channel 22f while a series of type T is being placed in the channel 22f. These means preferably comprise a flat spring 25 fixed to the outer face of the end wall and provided with an inturned end or catch 25L adapted to extend through an opening inthe end wall 22h, engage with the follower 23b and hold the latter at the rear end of the channel 22f. Then it is desired to lill the channel 22f, the cover is thrown back and the pusher 23 moved into lockingengagement with the spring catch 25a;v thereupon, the type T may be positioned in the channel, the cover 22c closed and the pusher 23 released.
26 indicates a camwhieh may be carried by the cover 22. The object of thev cam is to cause the automatic release of thel pusher 23 upon the closingv of the cover 22. For this purpose the cam 26 is positioned to engage the spring 25, as thecover 22c is closed, elevate the spring and cause its inturned end to disengage the pusher 23. Upon being re-v leased, the pusher '23 will automatically swing about its shaft under the action of the spring 233 into engagement with the rearmost type T.
It will be understood that the thickness of the type T depends upon the particular letter or character provided thereon. To prevent the discharge of more than one type through the opening 24, I preferably provide means. for regulating or adjusting the size of such opening according to the thickness of each type to be discharged therethrough. These regulating means preferably comprise a gate 27 pivotally mounted upon the casing 22X and the engaging walls or surfaces 2 carried by the plate B2 with which the gate engages as the casing is positioned over each rod D in distributing a type section T thereto. The gate 27 preferably consists of an arm 27", the inner end ,of which maybe pivoted at 27c upon the fivall 2250i the casing-22X, a plate 27d carried to openand close the opening 24 according, to'the ydistancethatfthe ar1n'27a is moved about' its pivot,;a'nd a inger 27ezwhich ,eX- tends forwardly K for engageinenuwith theAv by the frontgendofthe arin *2"7"L andiadapt'ed 'ivalis 2,'1V As Will be readily understood, there fis one-finger,engaginguvall 2 adjacenteach rodgl). .'TheNvalls 2 are preferably formed on the upper surface of theplate B, or a 'plate 'bmounted' thereon, rearward of theopening throughwhich the rods D extend. :The

ll`he segment is preferably pointed lat one end and is inserted into and up lthrough the openings 111 into engagementwith the low# ermosty type ot' the stacks of type. The operation of inserting the segment 15 into Vand up through one ot the openings 14 is illustrated in Fig. 12. After the segment is inserted in this manner, the segment is moved forwardly, thus removing` the lowermost type from the pocket 12aL through the adjacent opening 13. As the operative will continue to press the tree end of the segment 15 upwardly, the operative will automatically causethe segment to extend through the opening` in the type it is moved throiugjh the opening 125, thus causing the type to ring itselit on the segment. The segment 15 is then inserted into the opening below the stack oi type bearing the next letter which is to be set up in the line oi type. rJlhe operative repeats this operation for each type according to the letters constituting the words in the line which is being set up until the complete line is set. rThereupon, the segment 15 may be secured in the printing drum and additional lines set up in a similar manner.
1n F ig. 141 I have illustrated a slightly modified form'of the invention in which the connections 21 between the gear sector 19 and the link 2O are arranged to permit the pinion 19c to move in anti-clockwise direc tion by the downward movement of the lever 17 without revolving the link 20, but to revolve the link when the pinion rotates in a clockwise 'direction under the action oit the spring 19a. In this form of the invention the position of the pawl is reversed so as to lock the link thereto by the ei'igagement of the projection 21u', when revolving about its axis in a lefthand direction, but to permit the movement ot' the projection past the nose et the pawl when the pinion revolves in the opposite direction. lVhen the connections 21 arearranged .for operation in this manner, the spring 19" is strong enough to return the'lever 17 to normal position and through the gear sector 19b thereon to operate the link 20, connecting member 19 and gear sectors 18, as hereinbefore described. lVhen the connections are arranged in this manner I preferably provide a regulating device, such as a cylinder having a piston connected to the lever 17 and an air valve, whereby the return of the lever will be regulated. The purpose of this n construction is to provide for the uniform o )eration of the rod su 3 )ortine' and enfraen es r1 ing members 16a, 1Gb, so as to permit the .dropping of the type sections downwardly into stacked position. By causing the gear sector 19b to operate in one direction under the action of a spring and a regulating device the operating means will actuate the members'l, 16h, in a uniform 4manner and with the same torce. lilhen the operating devices are constructed and arranged for operation in this manner, the operative may readily and quickly swing the lever 17 downwardly, thus putting under tension the spring 191 which will then return the sector 19') to normal position and in so doing operate the rod supporting and engaging members 16, 161.
