Referring to the accompanying drawings, illustrating by Way of example one embodiment of the invention, a traveling series of character casting devices are presented suocessively at the casting and delivery positions. In said embodiment, a rotating carrier is provided with a plurality of chambers for casting the various desired characters, these chambers passing from the molten metal supply, where the empty chambers are charged, to a discharging position, where the cast types are discharged in justified lines.
In accordance with certain features of the invention, the carrier for the cast types is caused to selectively and successively discharge or eject at the discharging point or composing point, the cast types in the sequence or selection required for the desired composition, the word spaces being of proper size to justify the lines. Such selective discharging of the types is preferably efl'ected by stopping the carrier successively at the discharge point under the selective action of a controller. Such controller may be of various specific form or character, and comprises preferably a perforated sheet. Such sheet may likewise vary in its characteristics, but an example of a suitable sheet is one wherein a plurality of character selecting perforations occur in a single transverse line of the controller sheet or strip.
In such embodied form, the carrier 1 is shown of circular, and general disk-like, form and is supported and rotated by a shaft 2. Shaft 2 is successively rotated and stopped to discharge and compose the cast types. In the carrier 1, and preferably radially disposed and opening onto the periphery of the carrier, are a series of chambers 3, each for the purpose of casting a particular type, space-quads or character. At the bottom of the respective chambers are the type faces. These type faces may be removable, if desired, and are so shown in Fig. 12. The type faces in this figure are formed respectively, in removable pieces 5, which pieces are held in position in any suitable manner, as by screws 6.
In accordance with certain features of the invention, the pot 7 for the molten metal is in direct communication or connection with the chambers 3 in disk 1, whereby any of the type chambers 3 which have become empty by being discharged at the discharging or composing station, are filled with molten metal as they pass the pot 7. More particularly as embodied, the metal pot may be of any suitable or convenient form and may be in whole or in part under pressure. As shown, a piston or weight 9 is employed for this purpose. The heating devices for pot 7 are not shown, but may be of any suitable or approved form.
The bottom of the pot 7 is open at 8 and is closed by the periphery of the wheel 1, by any suitable form of joint. As shown, the periphery of wheel 1 is beveled at either side of the type chambers 3, and the bottom of the melting pot is correspondingly beveled. The connection or joint between the pot 7 and wheel 1, is adjustable and for this purpose, as embodied, there are provided regulating screws 12 threaded into lugs or plates 13 on, or fixed to, the pot, and bearing on surfaces on the machine frame.
Bearing on the periphery of wheel 1 is a stationary retaining ring 14-. mounted on the machine frame, and extending, preferably continuously, about the periphery and closing the outer ends of the type chambers 3 except when they are at the pot or at the dis charge point. 7
In the present preferred form, a stationary, discontinuous ring shaped or circular plate 16 forms one side of the type-casting chambers, the ring setting into or against the wheel 1,-and encircling shaft 2 and being bolted to the machine frame. as will be seen from Figs. 1 and 6. Suitable means will be provided when needed to permit air leak age or escape from a type chamber at the casting point, so as to secure solid type bodies. Such means maybe of any suitable form, and as embodied, the ring or plate 16 is jointed or articulated to permit air leakage at the casting point, while preventing meta-l leakage, and such a joint or articulation is shown in Fig. 6. The plate or ring 16 is discontinuous or cut away. at the discharge point 17 as will be seen from Fig. 6, to facilitate the discharge or composing of the selected types.
Means may be provided for facilitating the discharge of the selected types from the casting chambers, and as embodied one or more resilient, rotating arms or disks 20 operate in the recess in ring 16, and force the types outwardly into the channel 18, which directs it into the line in the galley.
The galley and the controlling and cooperating mechanism whereby the types for a line are received and the galley fed forward to receive the next line are not shown, but may be of any suitable form.
The manner of operation of the mecha nism already described is substantially as follows As the type casting chambers 3 pass beneath the pot 7, they are filled with metal and the types are cast. As the wheel rotates, thecasting chambers 3 pass successively from the pot 7, and their outer ends are then closed by the ring 1 1, and the bottom ends of the types are thereby formed and smoothed. In the preferred form, if the wheel continue-s its rotation, the types are not discharged at the composing point 17, but if the wheel is stopped, the particular type then at the discharge point is ejected and passes into the line in the galley. As the type chambers 3 pass onward, they again pass beneath the metal pot 7. If a type has been discharged from a chamber, a new type is cast therein from the metal in the pot 7, but if not, the type chamber being already full, there is, of course, no casting.
Means are provided by the invention for intermittently causing the discharge of the composed type in a selected sequence to pro duce a given composition, as perforated or otherwise indicated in a COIltIOllBl.0 l composition strip a which is usually preli1ni narily prepared to determine and apportion the size of the interverbal spaces or quads, to produce the justified lines. As embodied, upon shaft 2 is fixed a stop cylinder 30, provided with stops 51 disposed over its surface to correspond to the locations of the type casting chambers 3 in a Wheel 1. With cylinder 30 cooperate stop devicesor mecha nisms governed or operated by the composing or controller strip a". Fixed to shaft 2 is a suitable drive tending to rotate the shaft and therewith wheel 1, but permittingthem to be stopped from time to time by the stop cylinder mechanism. Said drive, as embodied, comprises a friction clutch 31 and a belt and pulley drive 32.
Cooperating with stop cylinder 30 is a bank or series of levers 33, each of which levers is supported by a slot 34 therein. through which passes a rod 35. Each of the levers 33 has a stop lug 50 thereon adapted to cooperate with one of the stops 51 in the stop cylinder. The levers 33 are int pelled forwardly (to the right in Fig. 3) and downwardly in a suitable manner, as by a corresponding series of springs 36 which ex- 1,2es,e1 1
tend between an arm 37 on each of the respective levers 33 and the frame piece 38.
At their forward ends the levers 33 have, respectively, a flexible connection 39 with a corresponding bank or series of controller strip levers 40, the levers 33 resting upon the corresponding levers 40, but there is some relative movement therebetween, as will be later explained. The levers 40 are pivoted, respectively, on a rod 41 supported by the machine frame, and are impelled; downwardly by aseries of springs 42. The levers 40 have each a downwardly extending detector finger 43, adapted to cooperate with a perforation in the controller w. Beneath the detector fingers 43 of the levers 40 is located a cylinder 44, journaled in the machine frame, and over which cylinder the controller strip 00 passes. The cylinder 44 is constructed to permit the dropping of a lever 40 and therewith of the corresponding lever 33 when the detector finger 43 of the particular lever 40 meets a erforation in the controller strip :0. As embodied, the cylinder 44 has in its periphery a series of holes 45, to permit the downward dropping of the detector fingers or levers as already described.
Also the cylinder 44 is provided with means for insuring an accurate and exact feed of the controller strip m. The cylinder 44 has also, at either end thereof, a series of sprocket teeth 46, which sprocket teeth cooperate with sprocket holes 47 in the controller strip at. The controller strip is further guided by a pair of rollers 48 located at either end of the cylinder 44, and straddling the sprocket teeth 46 at either side of the controller strip as it comes on. As the controller strip leaves the cylinder 44, it is similarly guided by a similar pair of guide rollers 49.
Means for restoring the stop levers 33, and the cotiperating controller strip levers 40 are provided, and in accordance with certain features of the invention, said means operate to restore the different levers individually or separately, when a plurality of character perforations for selecting successive cast characters occur on a single transverse line of the controller strip w. By this arrangement, a plurality of cast types may be ejected from the type wheel or disk and set up in the galley on a single rotation of the type wheel. This is done when a plurality of sequential characters in a composition. are found in the same succession or order, although not necessarily in sequence or proximate order in the type disk, the type disk in such case making only a part of a rotation between stops.
In the embodied form of such means, there is mounted on the machine frame a bar 55 which extends across the tails of the levers 33. As the bar moves downwardly. transversely or edgewise, it will engage the tails of any of the levers 33 when they are in the retracted position, as is the case when the detent on any lever has engaged with its stop 50 in the stop cylinder 30 (that is, the
lever has been moved to the left in Fig. 3)..
The bar 55 in its transverse movement will pass clear of the tails of the levers 33 when the levers are free from their stops on the stop cylinder 30, at which time they are drawn to the right in Fig. 3 by the corresponding spring 36. The bar 55 is suspended upon rods 56 and 57, which constitute, or are connected to, the cores of solenoids 58 and 59, which solenoids are mounted on the frame of the machine. Springs 60 and 61 act between the tops of the solenoids and collars on the upper ends of the rods to hold the bar 55 in elevated position. Solenoids 58 and 59 are in a circuit 52, which circuit is controlled either directly or through a suitable relay, in a well known manner, by contacts 53 which are either closed or actuated by a discharged type.
The manner of operation of the mechanism just described, is substantially as follows The controller strip on may be assumed to have no perforations therein, and at such time the detector fingers 43 (Figs. 2 and 3) will ride upon the surface of the controller strlp and levers 40 will be in the elevated position. In such position each lever 40 holds its cooperating lever 33 sufficiently high that the stop lug 5O thereon is clear of the corresponding stop or depression 51 in the cyllnder 30. At such time each spring 36 holds its lever 33 in the forward position (toward the right in Fig. 3) and the left hand end of the slot 34 will be against the rod 35. When the detector finger 43 of anv one of the controller strip levers 40 finds 5 corresponding perforation in the controller strip or, the lever drops downwardly under the mpulsion of its spring 42, and the corresponding lever 33 also drops downwardly, under the action of its spring 36, thereby bringing its stop lug 50 to rest upon the surface of the rotating stop cylinder 30. Vfhen the corrcsponding stop or depression 51 in the stop cylinder 30 engages the lug 50, lever 33 is thereby pushed backwardly, against the action of lts spring 36, and the rear end of the lever comes to rest against the member on the machine frame. Thus stop cylinder 30, shaft 2, and type disk 1, are precisely located so as to discharge the selected type into the orifice 18. i
As the type is discharged. the solenoids 58 and 59 are energized, and the bar 55 in descending will depress the rear end of the particular lever 33, which is engaged with the stop cylinder 30, as just described. The detent 50 of that lever is thereby lifted out of the stop 51 in the cylinder, and its spring 36 will draw the lever forward so that its stop lug 50 will then rest upon the surllld face of the cylinder ahead of its stop 51 with which it had just been engaged. The stop 51. thus cannot engage the lug 50 until the next succeeding revolution of the cylinder 30. Thus, a series of the levers 33 may be operated in succession to stop the cylinder 30 (and therewith the type wheel 1) a plurality of times during a single revolution of the type wheel.
Means are provided for. feeding forward the controller strip one degree, or the space between one transverse line of perforations and the next, after all the perforations in a transverse line have been recognized or have successively positioned the stop cylinder. In the embodied form of such means, there is provided at one end of the controller cylinder 44: a ratchet wheel 65, fast on the shaft 66 of the cylinder .91. Cooperating' with ratchet wheel is a pawl 67 which pawl is pivoted on a lever 68,controlled by a spring 69. Lever 68 is fixed to a shaft 70, which extends parallel to cylinder 44, and which has at the other end thereof a corresponding lever arm. From each of said levers, respectively, there extend upwardly pivotally connected rods 71, these rods having at their upper ends a horizontal cross bar 72, which bar lies just beneath the series or bank of levers 40.
At the other end of lever 68 is an armstu're 73 of a magnet 7 1, which magnet is in a circuit 7 5. Circuit 75 has in one branch thereof a contact 76, which is continually in circuit with the ring 77 on shaft lit aselected point in the rotation of type disk 1, which may be called the initial point, a contact 78 in the other branch of the circuit 75. Fixed to shaft 2 is an arm or disk 79 adapted to close the circuit 75 when the particular point in the rotation of disk 1 is reached. Thus when the rotation ofdisk 1 is completed and the number of perforations on one transverse line of the controller strip x has been recognized or exhausted. the magnet 74 is energized, rod 72 is lifted, and therewith the bank of levers it) are lifted clear of the controller strip, and the pawl and ratchet 65, 67 feed the controller strip forward the space of one transverse line.
A safety lock to prevent any rotation of the stop cylinder 30 during thismovement may also be provided, and in the embodied form, a ratchet wheel 89 is fixed on the shaft t, and hac cooperating therewith a pawl 80 held off by a spring 81. Paw] lever 80 has fixed to the other end thereof the armature 82 of=a magnet 83 located in the circuit 7 5'. Magnet 83 thus throws in'pa'wl 80 to lock the stop cylinder during thefeeding of the controller strip.
-A suitable device may be provided for breaking the circuit 75 to' return pawl. 67 and unlock detent-SO from' cylinder '30, so that the machinewill start onits nextcycle;
As embodied (Fig. 10) the contact bearing disk .79 has thereon a lug 84: of. insulating material, and the terminal of circuit 75 is a spring plate 85. Thus when lug 8 engages with spring 85 (see Fig. 11), the circuit is broken, the pawl 67 retracts ready for the next forward feed and detent 80 retracts, and cylinder 30 is free to rotate under the impulsion of its drive.
It may be advisable in certain cases to provide a type gate at the discharge point 17, although usually the types will remain in place and pass the discharge point without the necessity of the gate. In Fig. 13 of the drawings, one embodiment of a gate mechanism is illustrated, the gate being withdrawn each time the stop cylinder 30 comes to rest and a type to be selected and discharged is presented at the discharge point.
As embodied, a gate 90 is slidably mounted just below the type disk 1, and connected to the gate by a pivoted rod 91 is a lever having an arm 92, which lever arm is pivoted at 89 upon a bracket 96 on the machine frame. The lever has also an arm 93, between which arm and the bracket 96 is a spring 94, which acts to hold a stop 95 against the bracket, thereby holding the gate 90 in the closed position at the discharge orifice.
The core 97 of a solenoid 98 is pivotally connected to the lever arm 92, the solenoid being energized and deenergized in harmony with the movement of the stop cylinder 30. For this purpose the solenoid 98 has the branch 99 of its circuit connected to cont-act piece 101 carried upon the stop 52 on the machine frame. The branch 100 of the solenoid circuit extends to a 006perating contact piece carried upon a lever arm 102, pivoted at- 103 upon the frame member 52. The other arm of the lever 102 is part of, or is connected to a plate 10%, which plate extends along beneath the stop member 52 past the bank of keys 33, the plate 10st being likewise pivotally supported at its other end. The stop levers 33, in this case, are provided with extensions 105, respectively, whereby when a stop lever 33 is moved backwardly against' the stop plate 52, the extension 105 engages plate 104, thereby closing the solenoid circuit at 101 and 102, and thus drawing the gate 90 to the open position (to the left in Fig. 13) to permit the discharge of the selected type 3/. V
In accordance with one feature of the invention, selective mechanism for different tpye fonts or faces, or cases are provided.
In accordance with one feature of the. invention, such selective mechanism is automatically perated by the controller. Thus a perforation will be encountered in the controller calling for a particular character, say
for instance, the letter a and this would cause the mechanism to select or discharge a roman, lower case letter. If at the same time an auxiliary perforation is encountered at the proper point in the controller, the let ter a will still be selected or discharged, but it would be a lower case italicif desired, or it might be an upper case roman or italic, or otherwise varied in accordance with the location of the perforation and the organization of the machine.
In'such case, the type disk 1 may be provided with a plurality of casting chambers for the same type or character but for different fonts, or faces, or cases, or for arabic or roman characters, or otherwise. In Fig. 14,
of the drawings one embodiment is illus trated of such a selective mechanism in connection with a type gate. Therein a sliding block or gate 110 is mounted just beneath the type disk 1 and having therein a discharge orifice 111, adapted to pass into alinement or registry with either type chamber 3 or 2, according to the particular font, or face, or case, desired.
' The gate 110 is pivotally connected by a rod 112 to a T-lever having an arm 113, pivoted at 114: upon a bracket 115 carried upon the machine frame. The lever has below two oppositely arranged, laterally extending arms 116 and 117. Beneath these arms, respectively, are springs 118 and 119, balanced to maintain the orifice 111 centrally between the type chambers in the type disk 1, the gate 110 at either side of the orifice 111 serving to close both series of type chambers and retain the types y and z therein.
A solenoid 120 has its core connected to lever arm 116, and a solenoid 121 has its core connected to the lever arm 117, and connections or devices are provided whereby a perforation in the controller will selectively energize either of these solenoids. Thereby gate 110 is moved either to the right or to the left, and thereby permitting either the type 3 or the type a to be selected or discharged, while preventing the other of the said types from being selected, and retaining it within the type disk 1.
In the embodied form of the mechanism, in the bank of levers a0 is alever 4:0 having beyond its pivot point a double arm switch 122, 123, which is in the branch 100 of the solenoid circuit. Said switch cooperates with either one of two contact points 12% and 125, connecting, respectively, to the two solenoids 120 and 121. Thus if no perforation is present, the lever 10 is in the up position (shown in Fig. 1 1), and the circuit is closed at the contact 124, and in such case the solenoid 121 would be energized upon.
the circuit being closed at contacts 101, 102 (Fig. 13) and type 3 would be selected (Fig. 1%). When lever 10 is in the down POSl tion, due to the presence of a perforation in the controller strip at, the circuit will be closed at the contact point 125, and upon the closing of the circuit at 101, 102, the sole noid 120 will be energized and the type a would be selected.
In Fig. 15 of the drawings, the pivoted rod 112 on the lever 113 operates selectively type ejectors. A type ejector 126 is pivoted at 127, and has a downwardly extending arm 128, pivoted to the rod 112. Another type ejector 129 is pivoted at 130 and has a downwardly extending arm 131, pivoted to the rod 112. When lever 113 is rocked to the left, ejector 126 will eject type .2, and when lever 113 is rocked to the right, ejector 129 will eject type y. Such a mechanism may be used with or without the gate shown in Fig. 1 1, or other equivalent device.
The justified lines are secured by proper selection of the quads or interverbal spaces by the controller sheet. Certain of the type casting chambers 3 cast quads or interverbal spaces of various unit widths. That is, one chamber will cast a quad two units wide, and another chamber will cast aquad four units wide, there being sufficient quads of varying unit widths to effect the j ustification of any possible line. The machine which makes the controller strip has a justifying mechanism, which perforates the strip to select quads or interverbal spaces of the proper size to justify the line. As the present machine cooperates with the controller, quads of the proper size will be selected and delivered to the line at the interverbal spaces to effect the justification.
It will be understood from all the foregoing that a machine has been provided embodying the objects and advantages herein set forth, together with other objects and. advantages which in part will be obvious herefrom and in part may be learned bypractice with the invention. It will be further understood that changes may be made from the precise mechanism shown and de scribed without departing from the principles of the invention and without sacrificing its chief advantages.
