UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH L. FOLLETT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPRovEMENT |NcoRsE1-s.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,383, dated August 25, 1874; application led July 29,1814.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH L. FoLLET'r, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets, of which the following is a specification:
This invention comprises an attachment for corsets, termed by me a corset-expander,
' consisting of a strip of cloth or other materialpreferably of elastic and extensible natureadapted to be placed between the back edges of the corset, and provided on each side or edge with eyelet-holes, whereby it can, with the aid of lacing-cords, be laced into the back of the corset. In other words, instead of lacing the two back edges of the corset directly together, I provide an intermediate strip, eyelet-holed on each edge, to which strip each edge of the. corset is laced, independently of the other.
.The advantages attending the use of this device are many. Contact of the lacing-cords with the spine is prevented. The spine is covered and protected, and is prevented from being the first part of the body to cool when heated, and from being more exposedto draft and chill than the restof the body. When made of elastic material, which Iprefer, it has the further advantage of making the corset yielding and extensible, preventing, in great measure, breaking of springs, rendering respiration easy, causing the corset to fit or touch the person evenly, and equalizing the pressure or support to all parts of the body. It furthermore can be removed just as a lacing is removed when the corset is washed, and is an attachment that can be used with any corset.
In the accompanying drawing I have indicated one Way in which my invention may be carried into eect. The gure represents the corset expander, and also shows in dotted lines the corset to which said device is applied. l
As hereinbefore stated, the corset-expander may be of any suitable material, whether elastic or inelastic, In the present instance it 1s represented as consisting of a strip of india-rubber cloth, A,bound at the edges, and provided, on its longer or vertical edge's,with eyelet-'holes a, corresponding in position with the eyelet-holes in the back edges of the corset, between which the attachment is placed. The part A is secured in position by lacing-cord b, each edge ofthe corset being laced, independently of the other, to the contiguous edge of the expander.
The particular shape of the expander, as Well as its dimensions, may be varied, as taste or circumstances dictate; and, in lieu of being a strip of continuous 1ength,'it may be in two or more divisions in that respect. I prefer, however, the strip of 4continuous length.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
rEhe attachment for corsets, consisting of the herein-described corset-expander, made of elastic or inelastic material, adapted to be interposed between the back edges of the corset, and provided, on each of its vertical edges, with eyelet-holes, whereby it is laced to the corset, as shown andi-described'.
In testimony whereof Ihavehereunto signed my name this 28th day of July, A. D. 1874:.
