PATENT oFHcE.
rnrnn EBBESEN, or ,noLLYwoon, onnrronnrn Application filed January5, 1924. Serial No. 684,617.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER EBBns iN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Hollywood, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to looks especially adapted for use on automobiles, though not necessarily restricted tosuch use.
An important object of this invention is to provide a lock which will automatically hold the door in closed position in such a a manner that rattle is prevented.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lock of the character specified which is simple to operate, durable in use and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description. v
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a perspective of the improved lock applied to an open vehicle body.
Figure 2 is an enlarged perspective of the locking disk and associated elements.
Figure 3 is a perspective of a hand grip embodied in the invention,
Figure 4 is a perspective of the improved lock applied to the door of a closed motor Vehicle.
In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention the numeral 5 designates the body having side doors 6 adapted tobe closedby the improved lock forming the subject matter of this application.
As illustrated in Figure 2 one corner of the door is cut away or recessed to receive a locking disk 8 connected to the door by means of a pivot member 9. It will be seen that the outer surface of the locking disk or wheel 8 is approximately flush with the adjacent vertical edge of the door and the wheel projects beyond the inner and outer surfaces of the door.
In carrying out the invention, the wheel 8 is provided with an eccentric slot 10 opening out through the periphery of the wheel 7 and adapted to receive a locking arm 11 carried by the vehicle body and projecting a proper distance into the door-receiving opening. When the door is closed the wheel or dis'k8 is rotated so that the locking arm 11 is received in the eccentric slot 10 whereby the door is drawn tightly to its closed position. 'Due to the eccentric arrangement of the slot 10, the disk 8 holds the door securely in closed position and prevents rattling.
One' side of the disk 8 and more particularly the side opposite the slot 10 is recessed and is therefore substantially lighter than the side having the slot 10 so that the disk will turn of its own accord and move to its operative position.
Figure 1 illustrates that the outer side of the door is provided with a fixed knob or projection 20 adapted to be engaged by the fingers of the operator while the periphcry of the disk is provided with a knob 21, adapted to be engaged by the thumb of the operator. When it is desired to position the disk 8 for engaging the arm 11 it is merely necessary to grasp the knob 20 and the knob 21 and move the knob 21 downwardly in the direction of the fixed knob. The door is now slowly swung to a closed position and the disk will move to its operative position when the arm 11 is received in the eccentric slot.
The inventive idea involved in this application may also be carried out in connection with a closed vehicle body 25 having a full length door 26. In this case, the disk 8 may be operated from the inside or the outside and isprovided on its inner side adjacent the slot 10 with a knob 28 adapted to be engaged by ones fingers or thumb and immediately above the disk the door 26 .is provided with a fixed bracket 30 constituting a hand grip. lVhen the knob 28 is moved upwardly in the direction of the fixed bracket 30 the disk 8 is rotated so that it is moved to its inoperative position and the door may be conveniently opened. When it is desired to open the full length door 26 from the outside, it is merely necessary to move the knob 21 downwardly in the direction of the knob or bracket 20 present in the full length door.
A look constructed in accordance with this invention may be conveniently applied to a vehicle withoutmarring the appear-- of What its claimed.v a
ance of the vehicle, and by reason of them simple arrangement of the parts, jannnin or stlcklng of the look 1s unlikely, and
1r! lock may be conveniently manipulated .fromi the outside or the inside ofthe vehicle.
Of course, in the'actilal manufacture of the lock, the same may be refined and slight.
changes in arrangement and construction of bed the invention,

portion otthe-door being in the path of travel of said knob to limit the turning of f gthedisk. n v y "2. The combination ofaudoon a locking disk rotatably carried thereby and having an eccentric slot opening out through the "peripherythereof, a looking; arm arranged parallel to the axis of said disk and adapted to'be received in said slot, the periphery of said disk being provided with a knob, and a fixed knob carried by the door and extending parallel to said firstnamedknob.
.; 3." A; looki'oomprising disk having means whereby' the same may berotatably connected-,toia door and-being provided with an' eccentric slot opening out through the periphery thereof, the sideof said disk with the slot beingfivveighted, knobs carried by opposite, sides of saidf disk, and a fixed bracketiarranged between said knobs.
