- provements in-Pencil Sharpeners, of which thefollowing is a specification.
This-inventionrelates to new anduseful improvements in pencilSharpeners.
An important ob-ject of the invention is to provide apencilsharpener which may be easily'carriedin a persons'pocket and may} conveniently be handled withoutany sup- 8' and is" provided for receiving two of the port other than the hands ofthe'user.
A further obj ect of the invention 'is'to pro v-icle a'pencilsharpenerwherein a movable cutting elementiisprovided and associated with the remainingportions of the device in,
'= means of the pintles 11, as best illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, 4 and 5. This skeleton guide such a manner-that it may' be easily and quickly removed for sharpening the cutting :A; still further obj ect ofthey invention 1 is to provide a device of the above mentioned type which -is of exceedingly simple construction, strong, and durable, and one that may be manufactured at a very nominal cost.
Other objects and advantages of the-invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same.
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the pencil sharpener embodying this invention,
Figure 2 is an end elevational view of the pencil sharpener shown in Fig. 1 and taken to illustrate its appearance when viewed from the left hand end of Fig. 1,
Figure 3 is an end elevational View of the cutter illustrated in Fig. 1 and taken to illustrate the opposite end to that illustrated in Fig. 2, a
Figure & is a top plan view of the pencil sharpener shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive,
Figure 5 is a partly elevational View and partly sectional view ofthe pencil sharpener shown in the aforementioned figures,
Figure 6 is a transverse. sectional view taken upon line VI-VI of Fig. 5,-and- Figure 7 is a detail perspective view of the cutting element shown in asembled position in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose 5 of illustration is shown a preferred embodimentof this invention, the numeral 5 il1ustrates a rectangularly-shaped body portion having integrally formed therein and at one end thereof'a semi-conical-shaped groove 6. The endof the body portion-5 having the semi-conical groove 6 formed therein'is also provided with spaced pairs of circularly shaped lugswhich are-provided for forming portionsof a hingewhich will be described at a later point. Secured to the underface' of the rectangularly-shaped body portion 5 iSastrap-Which is formedinto a double loop fingers of'the operator. f k
A skeletonguide frame 9 is provided with theliingeportions 10 which are secured to the aforementioned hinge portions 7 by by the cross piece 13 which is'providedlwith an annularly arranged clasp portion 14; which.is intended to yieldably engage the transverse end edge of the rectangularlyshaped body portion 5 for retaining the said body portion and the skeleton guide frame in the respective positions illustrated in Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive.
In Fig. 7 there is illustrated in detail a cutting element which consists of the plate portion 16 having the integral, angularly arranged lugs 17 formed at the four corners thereof. This plate 16 carries a depending, integrally formed cutting edge 18 which is arranged transversely of the cutout portion 19 formed in the plate 16 for the purpose of permitting the shavings cut by the edge 18 to be discharged from the device. Suitably secured to the top surface of the plate 16 is a strap which is formed into a loop 20 and is provided for receiving one of the fingers of the operator.
It will be seen by inspecting Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive that the skeleton guide frame 9 may be hinged in respect to the rectangularly-shaped body portion 5, after the clasp 14 has been disengaged from the edge 15, and the looped strap 20 may be inserted into the groove formed by the spaced side arms 12 of the skeleton guide frame. 9. With the loop 20 in this position, the depending lugs 17 carried by the plate 16 will be arranged to slidably engage the longitudinal edges of the rectangularly-shaped b'ody port-ion 5. After the skeleton guide frame has again been secured to the rectangularly-shaped body portion 5, the operator may reciprocate the plate 16 for moving the cutting edge 18 longitudinally of the semi-conically-shaped groove 6 formed in the body portion 5. In Figs. 5 and 6, there is illustrated a pencil P positioned with its writing end received within the semi-conical groove 6. It will now be seen that when the operator reciproeates the plate 16 with its cutting edge 18 that the latter will cut shavings-from the pencil P for sharpening the same.
It is now believed that the construction and operation of this pencil sharpener will be understood by those skilled in the art. It is, further, to be understood, that the form of this invention herewith, shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims; 7
Having thus described the invention, I claim 1. A pencil sharpener comprising a platehaving at one enda semi-conical depression to receive one pencil end, said plate being provided with hinge eyesat each side of the base of said depression, a U-shaped plate having the legs of,}theU hinged to said having at one end a semi-conical depression to receive one pencil end, said plate being provided with hinge eyes at each sideof the base of said depression, a U-shaped plate eyes and carrying at its free end a spring clip engageable with the end of the first plate remote from the hinge eyes, a knife supporting plate provided with lugs on each side and at each end, said lugs engaging the side edges of the first plate, a knife carried by said knife supporting plate, and a handle projecting upwardly from the knife supporting plate between the legs of the U- shaped plate for reciprocating the knife supporting plate, said handle being formed as a finger receiving loop and the first plate having a plurality of finger receiving loopsextending downwardly from its under side.-
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature.
