CIRCULAR SCISSORS Filed Aug 8, 1946 Inventor DZ /0/ 906M700 f q j y WW ZEM Patented A r. 10, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 4 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in scissors used for cutting rounded or arcuate corners.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved scissors construction having pivoted parallel extending handles and arcuate cooperating blades, one of which is slotted to receive the material to be out.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved circular scissors construction having pivoted parallel extending handles with cooperatin finger engaging portions at one end thereof, and cooperating arcuate blade members at the opposite ends of the handles, one blade being longitudinally slotted to receive the material to be cut, and said other blade having a sharp arcuate edge formed by a perpendicular side and a merging angular side adapted to move in close contact with the slotted arcuate blade whereby angled corners of material may be cut to provide rounded corners.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved form of scissors for making rounded or arcuate cuts, wherein one scissor blade will positively support the material to be out, while the other blade shears off the material while moving at right angles to said first mentioned blade.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved circular scissors which will be highly efficient in operation, and relatively inexpensive to manufacture and produce.
Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application,
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved circular scissors;
Figure 2 is an edge view of the improved circular scissors;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the cooperating jaws of the scissors showing a piece of material inserted through the slotted blade, and
Figure 5 is a perspective view taken from a different angle of the cooperating pivoted blades showing a piece of material inserted through the longitudinal slot in one blade about to be cut by the other blade.
Like characters of reference are used throughout the following specifications and the accompanying drawings to designate corresponding parts.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided an improved scissors construction comprising a pair of parallel extending handles l and 2, the same being mounted upon the pivot screw or pin 3 extending through the said handles adjacent their outer ends, and formed with the thumb engaging apertured gripping portion 4 and with the apertured thumb engaging and gripping portion 5 respectively at their inner ends.
5 A material supporting blade generally denoted by the reference numeral 6 is integrally formed on the outer end of the handle I, and comprises the arcuate blade I which is longitudinally slotted as at 8, and is provided with the material supin porting flange or rest 9 whose opposite ends are extended upwardly at right angles as at H) and H to engage adjacent edges of a sheet of material l2 when the corner l3 thereof is inserted through the longitudinal slot 8, thereby limiting the distance said material may be extended through the slot.
The outer arcuate edge of the blade 6 cooperates with the arcuate cutting blade l4 formed integrally on the outer end of the handle 2 so that when the gripping portions of the scissors are compressed after being opened, the arcuate blade will move downwardly at right angles to the slot 8 to cut off the material I2 to form a rounded or arcuate corner thereon.
The edge l5 of the cutting blade I4 is sharpened and is formed by the intersecting vertical and angular sides of said blade.
Since the walls l0 and H of the blade 6 extend at substantially right angles, a corner. of a rectangular sheet of material will be evenly cut off and rounded by using the improved circular scissors.
From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that there has been devised and provided a highly efficient form of circular scissors for use in rounding 01f by cutting a piece of material when inserted through one of the blades of the scissors, thereby providing an even and symmetrical cut with the adjacent edges of the material extending at right angles to each other.
While the preferred embodiment of the instant invention has been illustrated and described, it will be understood that it is not intended to limit the scope of the invention thereto, as many minor changes in detail of construction may be resorted to without departure from the spirit of the invention. 7
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 50 Patent of the United States is:
l. A circular scissors comprising parallel pivoted handles, finger and thumb engaging and gripping portions at the adjacent inner ends thereof, an arcuate slotted blade on the outer end 55 of one handle, a material supporting flange integral therewith, material positioning shoulders at the opposite ends of said flange and integral with the last mentioned handle cooperable with the blade to cut the material passed through the 60 slot in said blade when said handles are operated,
and an integral arcuate cutting blade on the outer end of the other handle.
2. The subject matter as claimed in claim 1, and said material positioning shoulders extending at substantially right angles to each other, the handles being operable generally in a plane and the slot in said blade having its major axis normal to that plane.
3. A scissors for cutting the corner of an object to round it, comprising two handles pivotally connected together intermediate their ends, one of said handles having a first arcuate blade at one end thereof and the other of said handles having a second arcuate blade at the corresponding end thereof, said second blade having a slot therein opening laterally of said second blade, and said slot being arranged so that a plane passed through the ends thereof is substantially normal to the plane within which the handles are pivotally operable.
4. A scissors for cutting the corner of an object to round it, comprising two handles pivotally connected together intermediate their ends, one of said handles having a first arcuate blade at one end thereof and the other of said handles having a second arcuate blade at the corresponding end thereof, said second blade having a slot therein opening laterally of said second blade, and said slot being arranged so that a plane passed through the ends thereof is substantially normal to the plane within which the handles are pivotally operable, said second blade having shoulders disposed at the ends of said slot to position the material in the slot and to limit the amount of movement of the material inwardly of said slot.
