This invention relates in general to spring hingesof the single acting, and double acting type, having a hinge member comprising a web section and barrel section formed on one or both of the lateral margins of the; web section, and adapted to support springs, pintles, and other members, including means for holding one end of a spring in position, was to place the spring under tension by the swinging movement of a door with which the spring is connected. r More particularly, the invention relates to spring hinge members in which. theweb and barrel sections are made integral with uniform. thick- The invention has for its main objectto provide a hinge member of the'character stated, with means forming a bearing. on the ends ,of the barrel-section, adapted to cover and conceal the outer ends of the barrel and the joint between the barrel and the web and provide a finished appearance thereto.

As illustrated in the drawings, the hinge member consists. of a Web section 1 which, when V forming part of a double acting spring hinge, is provided on each of its lateral. margins with barrel sections 2. The
barrel sections for most purposes are preferably arranged asshown in Fig. 2, with the axes of the barrels offset from the plane of the websectionl, preferably. by extending the lateral margins. 3 .of the web 1 at an angle to the body thereof. That is not an essential feature of the invention, however, and if desired the barrel sections 2 may be arranged withtheir axes lying in the plane of the body of the webl, as shown inyFig. 8.
When a hinge member of-the class described is formed of a single blank of uniform thickness. throughout, and'without the aid. of auxiliary reinforcing. members, the
blank is made si iflici ent thickness 'of p a terial to withstand the strain to which the barrel member and its connection with the web section of the hinge member are subjected. In consequence thereof, a gap or open joint is sometimes made between the free edge of the barrel section and the web section, somewhat like that shown in Fig. 8.
In order that the gap or joint between the free end of the barrel section and the web section may be covered and concealed from view, a bearing thimble is provided having an inner flange or cylindrical extension 4 which engages the inner surface of the end of the barrel .section, preferably wit-h a. binding fit, as shown in Fig. 1. The thimble is also provided with a laterally eX- tending flange 5 that bears over upon the outer endof the barrel section and the inner margin of the web section at its j un-cture with the barrel section.
The flange 5 not only conceals the joint between the free end of the barrel section and the web section, but it also furnishes a smooth bearing surface for the springrholders of the pintles that are used in connection with said hinge member and pass through the barrel.
While in some cases the cylindrical flange 4 of the bearing thimble may be driven into the interior of the barrels with suflicient force as to cause the thimble member to be held in place by frictionalcontact with the barrel section, in most instances I prefer to provide the cylindrical flange t of the hearing thimble with a lin or offset 6 which in part, engages the somewhat open joint formed between the free end of the barrel section and the web section, as shown in Fig. 3, and holds the thimble member against rotary motion or displacement relative to the barrel section. I
In addition to said engaging fin or extension, the thimble member may be further held in. position by being welded to both the cylindrical flange of the thimble member and the web section, as indicated b y the arrows in Fig. 5.
If desired, the thimble hearing may be secured against displacement relatively to the barrel section by other means than those already described, and in some instances it may be desirable tosecure the cylindrical flange of said member to the barrel sections by means of rivets 8, as shown in Fig. 6.
lVhen constructed and arranged in the manner shown, a hinge member is provided that is simple and strong in construction, adapted to withstand any strain that may be normally exerted thereon, and provided with a finished, attractive appearance. In addition thereto, an even smooth bearing surface is provided on the ends of the barrel sections, making a close fit with the bearing surfaces of the heads of the pintles used in connection with said barrels.
a ra n5 It will be seen that the spot weld or other weld 7, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, holds the parts together, and in effect makes them 0116*. unitary piece, and thereby for special cases aids in resisting strains and stresses. To some extent, the rivet 8 in Fig. 6 serves the same purpose.
Of course, the uniform thickness of the material bent into shape and provided with strengthening ribs by compression as has been described and claimed in my copending application, Serial No. 529,580, flled March 28, 1923, insures a strong hinge that resists strains and stresses, but the special welding applied to the hinge or the rivets shown, gives additional strength to resist strains and stresses of a particular nature. The structures shown herein are like those in my copending application, in respect to the strengthening rib. therein described and shown, no claim per se being made thereto herein, as this is claimed in the aforesaid application. The rivet 8 in the present'application may be placed, instead of the place shown in Fig. 6, at the free end of the barrels in a position very close to that indicated for the weld 7 I have shown various embodiments of my invention, but it is clear that changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention defined in the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A spring-hinged member comprising a single thickness web section and a single thickness barrel section formed integral with each other, a thimble having a cylindrical flange engaging the inner surface of the end of said barrel section and a laterally extending flange overlapping the end of said barrel section and a part of the single thickness web section, and also the joint between the free end of said barrel section and said web section, and means permanently and fixedly joining the barrel section with the thimble, for strengthening the barrel sec tion with respect to the web section, through i the intermediary of the thimble and prevention of shift of the parts.
2. A spring hinged member comprising a single thickness web section and a single thickness barrel section, a thimble having a cylindrical flange engaging the inner surface of the end of said barrel section an l provided with a laterally extending flange overlapping the end of said single thickness barrel section and provided also with an offset adapted to be seated between the web and barrel, a part of the single thickness web section and the joint between said barrel section and said web section, the free end of said barrel section, the cylindrical flange oi said thimble, the offset, and the part 01"; said web section covered by the flange being welded together.
3. A spring hinge member comprising a single thickness Web section and a single thickness barrel section, a thimble for the end of the barrel section comprising a cylinclrical'section for engagement Within the end of the barrel section, a laterally extending flange for overlapping the end of the barrel section, and an offset adapted to seat between the barrel and web, and means for securing the offset of the thimble to the end 1 of the barrel section of the hinge and to the Web.
