UNITED STATES 'HARRY s. wonrr, or Naw ROCHELLE. new Yoan.l
HOSE.
Application mea August a1, w24. serial No. 733,270.
To all whom t may concern.' I l i Be it known that I, HARRY S. VVOLFF, a citizen of the vUnited States, residing at New Rochelle, in the county of /Jestchester and Sta-te of New York, have invented ce rtainnew and useful improvements in Hose, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hosiery and my improvements are particularly directed to hose intended to be worn next the'skin, to supply warmth, and to ,serve as a'base for more decorative outer hose drawn thereover.
Since my introduction in the market of base or under hose, and the extensive use thereof that has ensued, some users have regarded the relatively heavy woolen material, of which these under hose are composed, added to the material of the silken hose placed thereover, as making too snug the fit of the foot within the shoe, and leading to the necessity of wearing a larger sized shoe.
Therefore my present invention consists in so devising the foot portion of a base or under hose that the toe and heel portions of the wearers foot and the sole thereof under the instep will be left uncovered, while at the same time not detracting from the snugly fitting quality of said foot portion upon the wearers foot, nor causing it to present any loose edges liable to roll up and bunch when drawing the outer hose thereon.
@ther features and advantages of my invention will hereinafter appear.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved hose displayed on a wearers leg.
Fig. 2 is a similar view, the foot portion of the hose being shown in vertical section.
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view.
In said views the foot portion of the hose is shown as having the formed opening 1 at its toe end, said opening, whose edge may be suitably hemmed or bound to prevent unravelling of the material, comprising the terminus of the hose, permitting the protrusion of the toes, or a part thereof, and being adapted to lie snugly against the toes. This effect is produced by fashioning the hose foot portion, as at 2, to accord that portion a substantially tapering or truncated cone-like contour, whereby the edge of opening 1 will bind against the toes. Said edge of opening 1 extends beyond the ball of the foot and over what is known as thel sesamoid bone, which Vis the bone at the base of the toe. The reason for seeking and achieving this effect is that thereby the hose material at the opening 1 will not roll over and bunch up as an outer hose is drawn over the foot.
-From the drawings it can be seen that the toe portion of the hose extends to a point beyond the joint adjacent the ball of the foot and encircles the foot portion and a portion of the toe portion of the foot; or
.in other words, the toe portion of thehose extends to a point adjacent the toes, it being obvious from the particular positioning of the hose that the tendencyof the hose to slide upwardly or rearwardlyon the foot and also the tendency of the edge'of the hose to rollover is eliminated while the hose is in use.
' It is to be understood thaty my improved base or under hose is composed .of wool'or other relatively heavy material, to supply warmth, so that, for example, a silken hose may be placed thereon to supply the more decorative effect.
Also, it is to be understood that in practice my improved under hose is preferably of flesh color, in order that silk or other hose Vof relatively diaphanous material will not have the appearance of their coloring effect impaired by a base of contrasting color.
At the heel portion of the hose foot there is also provided an opening 3, whose edge may be similarly hemmed or bound, and which permits the protrusion of the wearers heel.
These openings 1 and 3, by exposing the wearers toes and heel, enable the silk or outer hose to have dir-ect contact therewith, and thus do not add the thickness of the base hose material to these portions of the foot. In consequence the wearer may use the same sized shoe as when only a silken hose is worn without experiencing the discomfort which might result if the added thickness of heavy weight under hose material were applied at the toe and heel.
Since pressure at the instep may also result from the imposition of under hose material in that region, this is compensated for in my improved hose by providing the sole opening 4, also suitably hemmed or bound, this opening occurring` beneath the instep for that purpose.
It has hereinbefore been set forth that the snugly fitting effect of the hose* foot portion toward the toe opening is achieved by fashioning that portion to accord it asubstantially tapering or truncated cone-like contour. By fashioning it is meant that the material at the foot base is provided with a central longitudinal seam 5, uniting the opposed edges whichdhlave been out so as to convergingly draw the material inwardly and hold it snug-ly .to the foot.
Variations within the spirit, and scope of my invention are equally comprehended by the foregoing disclosure.
l daim:
l. Under hose including' a foot portion having a fashioned forward end extending forwardly beyond the ball of the foot and over the sesalnoid bone, said forward end being open at its extremity to `permit projection fof the toes, said 'forwardly extending' end entirely surrounding' the corresponding portion of the foot, the said forward end convergingforwardly to hold the material snugly to l.the foot.
2. Under hose whose toe, heel and lsole are provided with openings for the exposure of the wearers foot respectively at its toe, heel and sole portions, the under hose being fashioned with tapering contour toward the toe opening., to permit the peripheral edge of said opening to lie 4snugly against the toe portion of the wearers foot.
Under hose including' a foot portion having a fashioned forward end extending forwardly beyond the ball of the foot and open at its extremity to permit projection of the toes, said forwardly extending end entirely surrounding the corresponding portion of the footr1 and covering the same from the toes to the arch of the foot` the heel portion of the hose being cut away to allow projection of the wearers heel and prevent `double thickness when wearingl the under hose with other hosiery, the foot pon tion being' also cut away beneath the instep to relieve pressure at such `point.
4E.v Under hose including` a foot portion liavinn a fashioned forward end extending forwardly beyond the ball of the foot and to a point adjacent the toes and open at its extremity, to permit projection of the toes, said forwardly lextendingr end entirely surrounding' the corresponding* portion of 'the foot` the said forward end having: a central longitudinal Iseam and converging forward ly to draw the material inwardly and hold it snugly to the foot.
Executed this llth day of Aug-ust i924.
