SANITARY COVER FOR PILLOWS.

Be it known that we, BENJAMIN LAsiiiN and Herinner J. BInnnMAN, both citizens of the United States, both residing in Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have jointly invented a certain new and useful Sanitary Cover for Pillows. of which the following is a specilication.

This invention generally stated relates to protective coverings and has more, especial relation to a santitary cover for pillows and the like.

The principal object of the present invention is to provide a neat, simple, desirable, efcient and comparatively inexpensive protective covering for pillows and the like which may be readily and expeditiously applied to and removed from a pillow and which is made of sheet rubber and which is provided with a novel detachable end portion or cap whereby a pillow or the like may be maintained clean and sanitary. A further object of the present invention resides in the provision of a novel arrangement and combination of parts for attaining the results sought by said principal object.

The invention consists of the novel construction hereinafter described and tin-ally claimed.

The nature, characteristic features and scope of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, and in which:

For the purpose of illustrating our invention we have shown in the accompanying drawings one form thereof which is at present preferred by us, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which our invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that our invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the 4, 1924. Thile the protective covering of our invention is especially adapted to enclose a tick containing feathers or other filling to resist or repel the passage of water or other liquid to the feathers or other filling obviously the cover may be used in other ways and for other purposes Without departing from the scope of the appended claims. The cover about to be specifically described is applicable to household use and is especially desirable in nurseries, sick-rooms, hospitals and institutions for the aged and infirm.

In the drawings the reference numeral 1() designates a sack-like covering of thin sheet rubber. said covering being preferably formed of two sheets of 'material with the adjacent meeting parts stitched together thus forming seams 11. The upper or mouth portion is folded in and stitched as at 12 to form a hem 13. This hem 13 therefore provides a double thickness of goods where most desired. The hem is provided with a plurality of apertures 14 which extend entirely through the hem, said holes being spaced apart in relatively close relation. Adapted for detachable engagement over the mouth portion of said sack-like covering is an end piece or cap 15 of sheet rubber, preferably made in one piece, folded over upon itself and stitched at its ends to provide seams 16. The lower edges of the cap are turned inwardly and stitched at 16 to provide a hem 17. Thus strength is provided at a very desirable portion of the entire casing as will presently appear. Secured to inner portion of hem 17 of said cap and upon one side thereof are the male members 18 of two-part snap-fasteners. Secured to the inner portion of hem 17 upon the opposite side of the cap 15 are the female or socket members 19 of said snap fasteners. The members 18-19 are attached to the cap so that when the latter is inserted over the mouth of the casing 1() said members 18--19 are in register with the openings or holes 14e in hein 13. Thus by snapping together the continuous row of parts 18-19, which parts pass through the holes 14: the casing and its cap are snugly secured together as best seen in Fig. 3, to prevent dust, dirt, water or other material from penetrating between the cap and casing parts. For illustrative purposes we have showna pillow 20 within the casing. While We have shown and described snap-fasteners parts 18-19 buttons, hooks and eyes or fastening means may be devised for securing the cap to the casing as is readily apparent. The novel form of cap provides for a quick and easy detachment of parts, it being merely necessary to grasp one extremity of the cap and by exerting pull thereon rapidly disengage the parts 18 from the parts 19. Thus an absolutely unobstructed mouth opening is provided the casing proper for removal and insertion of pillows or the like. As clearly shown in Fig. 3, there are eight (8) thicknesses of material formed by the hems of the mouth and cap portions of the casing, thus providing a greatly reinforced structure where stress and strain are greatest.

What we claim is:

l. An article of the character stated comprising a protective casing or covering of sheet rubber closed upon three sides and having an open end, which end is provided with a hem having a continuous row of spaced openings therethrough, a 'closure or cap of sheet rubber for said casing having closed sides and top and an open bottom, which latter is provided with a hem, and a plurality of fastening mediums carried by the hem portion of said cap which mediums are in register with said casing openings when the cap is inserted over the casing mouth, whereby said hem parts may be separably attached together by said mediums cooperatively engaging through said openings.

2. An article of the character stated comprising a protective casing or covering of sheet rubber closed upon three sides and lhaving an open end, which end is provided with a hem having a continuous row of spaced openings therethrough, a closure or cap of sheet rubber for said casing having closed sides and top and an open bottom, which latter is provided with a hem, and a plurality of two-part snap fasteners carried by the hem portion of said cap which are in register with said casing openings when the cap is inserted over the 4casing mouth, whereby said hem parts may be separably attached together by said snap-fasteners cooperatively engaging through said openings.
