Description
E. FISHER.
Machin'esnr' Forming Boot and Shoe Heels,
THE GRAPHIC CILPHUYO -LlTHJSl 4X PARK PLACE,N.Y-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE'.
EDWIN FISHER, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OFONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO WILLIAM R. ALBERTSON.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR FORMING BOOT AND SHOE HEELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,236, dated August 18, 1874; application filed June 20, 1874. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN FIsHER, of the city and county of `Worcester, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Building Boot and Shoe Heels and I do hereby declare .the following to be a full, clear, and exaqt description of the same, forming part of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the machine, Fig. 2 a top plan view, and Fig. 3 a transverse section taken in the plane of the line .fr m, Fig. 2. f
Similar letters of reference denote correponding parts in the several figures of the drawings. i
My invention has for its object to construct a machine for readily and conveniently building up a boot or shoe heel from lifts of the -1 proper size preparatory to the prickin g, nailing, and finishing of the said heel upon a machine or by hand and to this end the invention consists in the combination of the tapering receptacle to register and gage the size and form of the heel, and hold vit while the lifts are tacked with an ejector, by which the heel, when bultup and tacked, can be readily removed.
In the accompanying drawingsA is a table of suitable size and form, and B is a receptacle or cup bolted, or otherwise secured to the top thereof. The interior of the receptacle is shaped to correspond with the form of the heel to be built up, and receives a platen or head, C, which rests upon the table or bottom of the cup, and conforms to the shape of the latter at the bottom. The under side of the head is provided with a stud, D, projecting down through a suitable opening in the table,
so as to rest upon the head of a cam-lever, E, pivoted to a suitable bracket, F, under the table. The cam-lever may be operated by any convenient mechanism, but I prefer a treadle as the simplest form.
The operation of the heel-former is as follows The leather or lifts being first cut in the proper form, the operator places the smallest lift in the receptacle, pressing it firmly down until it rests upon the head C. The succeeding lifts are then inserted, one upon the other, in like manner, until the heel is formed ofthe requisite height or thickness, when the Whole number are tacked together by one or more nails, and is ready vfor the ram, if one is to be used. After the heel has been tacked, as above described, the operator places his foot upon the treadle, or operates the cam-lever so as t0 throw up the head C and eject the heel from the receptacle. The blank heel is now complete, ready for attachment t0 a boot or shoe, or to be compressed or to go through the operation of being prickedv for the nails preparatory for attachment to the boot or shoe. The heel does not require trimming, as the lifting is cut with my improved lift-cutting machine, which produces the lifts Wit-ha square breast and beveled edge, or lateral contour.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is The combination of the cam-lever and ejectinghead with the tapering receptacle, substantially as described, for the purpose specifled.
EDWIN FISHER.
