COMBINED KEY AND 'GOMBNATION l'A'JCIKI.`
Apnlicaticnled November 3, 1923( SerialNo, 672,464. i
To aZZfLULom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, DAVID H. BELLAMoRn, a citizen of the United States, and residin inthe borough of Manhattan, city, county, 5 and State of New York, have invented cer- .tain new and .useful Improvements in Com-- bined KeyV and Combination VLocks, 'of which the! following is a specification. vThis invention relates to locks of the comm binedkey and combination type, and it is the principalaim of this invention to provide a lock which 'may be used as a plain key lock, and which. may also be 4used asa plainV combination lock, and one which may l be used as a combination lock, subject, how? ever, to controlbya key. f j p 'A further object'ol1 this invention is to provide a combinedkey and combination lock which mayV be'adjusted readily` and i'f easily fromV a plain combination lock rto a key lock, and vice versa,'and onepwhichmay be adjusted readily and easily Jfrom a plain i combination lock to a combination lock which is controlled by a key, and vice versa,
and one "Whichmay -be readily and easily adjusted from a plain key lock to Aa combinationlock controlled by akey, and vice versa.
Another object of myinvention is to provide a lock which isreadily and easily mountable in a Wall or thelike such a Way that-,it may not be readily removed therefrom or rendered inoperative by :an nnautherized person, Vand one Which -Will ellectively resist attempts to drive the lock inwardly from the outside of thevvall.
JAnother object-'0f my invention is to pro-' vide a lock of the character described Which is simple and durable, and eticientinoperation. v Other objects of ythis invention will be in part obvious and in part `pointed out hereinafter. j Y The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of `parts Whicli will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scopeot-the application otvvhich Will be indicated in the ft'olloiving claims.
ln'accordance Withmy invention, the lock comprises a plurality of tumblers operable either vfrom a combination knob `and dial, or from a ranged" concentric j with the combination key tube, which is preferably ar- -kncb and dial.' Separate, mechanism tor*- Vactuating the .tumblers 'from the key `tube d combinationknob.is,provided, but prounlocked by ,appropriately manipulating` vision `is made whereby the lock may be ad- .thecombination dial and knob alone, and whereby the lock may be adjusted so that it j may be locked, and unlocked ley-'means of an appropriate key operating in the key tube, j and'adjustable means arealso providedfoil' connecting the key lock mechanismwith the combination mechanism, so that the combination dial may not be manipulatedto unlock the lock unless the key-lock mechanism `has ,iirst been .properly adjusted by means of a key operating in the key tube. The-'arrangement is such that therready and'easy ad- .v
`justinent. of the lock into `the `various conditions above reterred ltol` may be manually accomplished, some from the inside of the Wall on which thelock-is'inounted` In order that a clearer'understanding `of my inventionmay be had, attention is here-` by `directed to .the accompanying drawings, forming` a part of this application'andillustrating` certain possible embodiments of myY invention.` A .i

Similar reterencecharacters referto similar parts throughout the several views of thedrawings.v` f Y Referring to the drawings, the lockVV 1s shownmounted upon a wall, such as is `usually found 'in doors otsaies, safe cabinets and the like, this 'wall including outer metallic wall 1 and innermetallic wall 2. A suitable tumbler casing 3 is 'secured to the inner side of wall 2. Casing 3 may be provided with a cover 4, providing a Ahollou7 annular arborI 5, about which a'plurality of combination 'tumblers '6,7 and tareV rotat`- the squaredlower end 19 of the key lock spindle" 20:" Key lock spindlef20 extends lthrough acentral bore in thecombination s' `i`ndle"16. `l/Vith the upper end of spindle 2 ,"Ua's'lbyY means' oftongue and groove con- 1'1'e'ction`s,"such 'as`21', is connected the rotating cylinder22'o'f the keylock, which is ofthepinjtu'mblver type', having two sets of pin tumbler's'23` and 24 earri'ed in appropriate re'c'efssesinthe enlarged upper end l25 of spindle" 16, andfhaving another set of pin tumblers 26 mounted in'suitable recesses 2.7 in the key cylinder 22, so that the VVkey cylinder 22 can be rotated with respect to the .combination loekcylinder 16, 'and'inay be locked in eitherone of two different` positionswithrespectthereto-by means of.' an appropriate key .opera'ting'in key slot'28. Key slot 28 is exposed in the `cent'erof combinatin knob 29, 'which' knob, together with name plate 30 and combination dial"31,"is Vsuitably secured` tov the threaded top of 'combinationspindle-,16,as by means of c'ooperating threads 32 andpin 33. In conjunctioiwith dial 31,':a eo-act'ing dial 34 is secured to the outside of the wall platel. Pre'i.e'rably,`a protection tube 35 is provided about 'the spindle 16, having its upper end threaded, as at 36, and secured by Washers 37 'and 38, engaging the threads at the front and rear of the wall plate 1`.. The inner endV ofeovei member is: preferably enlarged, as at 39, and is there suitably'seeured .to
the outer surface ofwall plate 2; The 'Con-V struction of the parts is such` that the en'- larged upper portion 25 of the spin'dle`16 is abutted by shoulders 40y providedbyeover tubeY 35'. 'The inner end of spindle 16 is reduced, as at '15, where it extends through the aperture 41 in thevplate'2, to provide hshoulders"42,"which; come against the outer :drive tumbler 13, which, onaccount of th Y* engagement of pin 16m elongated slot 1,2,
surfaceo wall-2. Thus, both the shoulders 40 andthe wallplate 2 prevent the spindle 16 from being driven inwardly of thewalls. To prevent the spindle 2Ov being vdriven inwardly of 'the spindle16,`th e 'spindle 20'is f provided with an enlarged portion 43, which is abutted on the rear by shoulders 44 pro- 45, in which is engaged a semi-circular key 46: carried on spindle 16. .Another method of accomplishing v this objectA may include Y the severing of the spindle'16,yas at 47 (F 9), and .incorporating between the two parts of the spindle two semiJcircular keys. 48, which extend into thefkey cylinder r'e-VV cess 45.7`The two parts of the spindle 16 and the keys 48 may be held in place' by screws 49. Adjacent the tumbler casing 3'is pivoted, as at 50, .atrigger 51, wliiclifisv adapted to 'bemoved into and out ofl Yclogging po'sition with 'respect to' bolt "work, orthe like, :in response'to the' operation ofthe lock.V Trigger member` 51 is provided with a finger portion 52A presented radially towardV the edges. o'f all the tumblers, a'nd the tumblers are provided "on their peripheries with suitable notches', -su'ch as 53,1V 54 and 55, into vwhich finger 52 may move to assume unlocked position.' Each of these notches has one side'beveled or slanted, as at 56, so that, by turning one or more of the tumblers, the tri-gger'imay'be cammed out'into locking position. Rotatably' mounted in tumbler casing, 3 isa latch member 57, havingV a main eccentric portion 58, which ismovable upon rotationvof-meinber 57 into and out of engagement 'with suitable notches 59 and 60 provided in tumblers 11, 6, 7 and 8, The cam, lportion 58 is itself notched, as at 61, so thatits adjustment is not interfered with by `ltumbler 13,V which is notprovided with a notchcorrespondfing with the notches 59 A and 60.` A' suitable arm 62 and knob 63 may be attached, to member. 57, whereby latch 57 may be adjustedjinto and out of locking engagement with the tumblers, and suitable arrangement may beV made for maintaining member 57 ink adjustedI position, either frictionally or otherwise, so
that it cannot Vbe jarred out of adjusted position,
` willlbe apparent from the above, the "i lock consists of a plurality of ordinary combination tnmblers 6, 7 and 8, a knob and dial, af drivewheel 11 for operating the tumblers from the knob and dial through the spindle 16 (which, however, comprises the outer member of thekey lock), andV key lockcylinder 22,01` 'inner member of thekey lock, connlected4k by.Y means of spindle 2O to auxiliary permits rotationfof key cylinder 22 3and spindl-e 2O and tumbler 13 through 9Go With- *out interfering With the pin of main drive tumbler 11. Therefore, the notchf5l oftheauxiliaryr drive tumblerkl may be brought into or outof alignment` with the notch 53. of drive tumbler 11 by rotating key cylinder 22fivithin spindle 16 by means ofan appropriate key inserted into vkey slot 28.
VlNhen notch 54 `is adjusted so as to be outlof s alignment with notch53 of tumbler 11,`the
5 lock, Anyattempt toltamper with thiscong.
`main trigger 51 may not be moved intov unlocked position solely operating the combination` because, even vWhen the slots 53 and 55l of Vthe drive tumbler tuinblers are in alignment opposite finger 52, the inward movement of this finger 'Will be prevented by auxiliary tumbler` 13, Whose slot is locked in a 'position which is out of alignment with the other slots. "j Therefore,
'when the lock is inthis condition, it is first necessary to adjust key cylinder 22 with respect to spindlel, and then toproperly manipulate the combination to eect vthe unlocking offthe trigger' 51. Tn this adjustment, the lock isA a combined combination and key lock. j
tumbler 1,3 is in alignment `With slot 53m t-he main drive ftumblerll, their the lockvis operable as a plain combination lock, since slots 53 and 54 Will maintain their alignment for` all manipulations'of the knob 29.
In order to adjust the lock for operation ask a plain key lock,it is necessary firstto align the slot 59 in tumbler 11 and the'slots 60 in the combination tumblers opposite latch j 57,
and then to throw the latch into engagement with these' notches so ras to hold tumblers 11, 6, 7 and 8' stationary, With their, slots 53 i and in alignment and openy toward finger 52 of trigger 51. This adjustment leaves tumbler 13 free to be rotated back and forth through by means of an appropriate key `operating in key sloti28.A Thus, solelyby means of the key, the tumbler 13 may be adjusted intofor out of locking position, and the trigger 51 mav be placed intooroutot locking position.
Tt will also be'apparent that, ivith latch 57 retracted, by merely turningthe. key While holding the knob stationary, the lock be conditionedfor or prevented from operaVA tion solely by they combination.l Foriiiu` stance, the lock may be unlockedv in the regular Way fbyfnianipulating thefknob alone,
and then if for any reason it isidesired to lock thev lock AWithout disturbing the combination, the knob may be Vheld',stationary 'and` the key introduced, turned and removed; The lock is now junlocked as regardsthe combination but locked as regards the key dition Will almost surely result'in disturbing A and combination T the key cylinder 22 has been Iso adjusted `with respect to yspindle 16 that the slot in the combination, and in locking tlieflock inV this regard"also.` "Air-authorized person,
however, may unlock the lock `merely by means of. aikeytvithout needi-ng'to bother with manipulating the combination unless i' the combination has been disturbed in the j meantime.
As many changescould be )made in the aboveronstructiom and many apparently Widely diderent embodiments of this inven- 'tion could be made Without departing: fromV the scopetliereof, it is intended that all mat'- ter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpretedA as illustrative and not ina limiting sense.
