W. S,` DAVIS. Cotton-Bale Ties.
THE GRAPHIC CLPMUTO-Ll 171.3911 #l PARK PLACE'NX.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WATERS' s. nAvIs, 0E eALvEsToN, TEXAS.. I
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-BALE TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,229, dated August 18, 1874; application led Juiy 22, 1814.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WATERS S. DAVIS, of Galveston, in the county of Galveston and State of Texas, have invented an Improved Bale-Hoop Tie, of which the following is a specification:
My invention `relates to an improved means of fasteningthe hoops `orbands of cotton or other bales; and it consists in a plate provided with a slot and a raised loop, in combination with a tongue provided with a neck and T-head, whereby the plate is held securely in place on the hoop or band without depending therefor upon the elasticity of the bale, andthe hoop or band is readily and Vsecurely fastened by the engagement of the T-head on the tongue with the slot in the plate.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved' fastening, showing the manner of attaching the plate to the hoop or band. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, showing the parts coupled together. Fig; 3 is a top-view, showing the manner of coupling the plate and tongue. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section through the hoop or band and fastening device.
The hoop or band() is made of the ordinary hoop-iron in the usual way. The plate A is provided with a slot, a, and a raised loop, b,
and, preferably, is formed atfone operation by striking it out of sheetv metal with dies or other suitable tools or machinery. The loop b is, formed with its inner side a sufficient dis Vtance from the 'plane of the surface of the plate to freely admit the passage of `the hoop or band through the loop. The tongue B is provided with a neck, c, and aT-head, d, and is formed by striking it out of sheet metal, as described in regard tothe plate A. Theneck c corresponds with thewidthV of the slot a in the plate, and the head d is Wider than said slot, as shown in full lines inFig. l, and in dotted lines in Figs. 2 and 3. The neck c is' bent or curved, forming an oiset, e, Iso as to depress thehead, and allow it to pass through the slot andlieliat under the plate A, as shown in Fig. 4. The tongue B is preferably riveted to the hoop or band, thus saving several inches -of hoop-iron in each band, which would be bent back if passed through a slot in the ordinary way. The plate A is attached to the hoop or band C by passing the end of the band through the loop and' sliding the plate along said band, with the slotted portion foremost, as shown in Fig. l, until a suiiicient length of the band has passed through the loop. The plate A is then turned in the direction of the arrow shown -in Fig. 1, so as to bend the hoop in the form and place the plate in the position shown in Figs. 2 and 4, when the parts are ready to be coupled, which' operation is performed by inserting one arm of the T-head in the slot a, and then turning it, as shown in Fig. 3, until the other arm of the head :is free to pass through the slot and slip under the plate, and lie flat, when the hoop or band is straightened out, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4.
The bend of the hoop being formed around the raised loop, it is held securely in place without depending on the elasticity of the bale.
I claim- 1. The plate A, provided with a slot, a, and raised loop b, in combination with the tongue B, provided with a neck, c, and head d, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
2. The tongue B, riveted to the hoop C, and provided with a head, d, and neck c, in combination with the plate A, provided with -a slot, a, which at some part of lits length is of less width than the head d, and with a loop or eye for the hoop C to pass through, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
3. The oiset e in the neck of the tongue B. in combination with the slot a in the plate A, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
WATERS S. DAVIS.
