To all =tU/b019t it may cancer/n Be it lrn ow-n 3th at WVLLBEK F VZTRUIDIVBO and W'Vrnenwr L. E :Kmrren, citizens of: the i'Umted States of America, residing at-"New "Gar'lisle,
in the county-of rGlark-a ndyStateof Ohio,
have invented inew and :useful:Improvements 111 Oil-Filtering Devices, of which thei following is a specification.
The purpose ofthe invention is to provide a means for attachmentto the slanting cover of the transmission housing of a conven tional form of automobile-so that the oil transmitted to the transmission drums by the well known splaslrsystem must pass through the device so that carbon, lint, and other foreign matter finding its way into the lubricating oil may be trapped and easilyremoved upon the periodical removal or displacement of the cover of thetransmission casing. It is further the object of the invention'to provide a device of this character Vwhich is simple in construction, cheap to manufacture and durable and effective in operation.
With these general purposes in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein v Figure 1 is a sectional view taken longitudinally through the transmission and crank case of an auto-vehicle, showing the position of the invention relative thereto, the invention belng shown in elevat on.
Figure 2 is an elevational view of the device comprising the invention.
Figure 3v is a section on theline 33-of Figure 2.
Figure 4c is a section on the line 44 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a section on the line 55 of Figure 2.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the shield.
The invention comprises an open trapezoidal-shaped frame 1, perforated as at 2' for the reception of fasteners 3 by means of which the frame, is secured to the cover 4 of the transmission casing 5. .The frame is designed to support a screen 6 of crosssectionally semi-circular form, the narrow end of the screen being connected with a plate 7 constituting the bottom of a reticulated receptacle into which the oil is received and pass-ed to leave the sediment or -whic h it -is deposited by gravity, due to the 1 position :of the device on the cover "3.
in order that the oil may be directed into the reticulated receptacle in its passage from Fit-he :eraiik casing to thetransmission drums,
-a 'sh-ield '8 is provided and secured :to the frame 1' a t' the upper end of the reticulated receptacle, "-sai d sh ie'ld being preferably of edge 9 at one side, being cut away at the other side as indicated at 10 to provide a space, together with the open space at the top, for the entrance of oil as it is thrown in the movement of the fly wheel, the rolled or'coiled edge 9constituting a wing serving to catch the oil anddeflect it into the reticulated receptacle from which it passes to the transmission drums, the foreign substances contained in the oil as a result of the opera-- tion of the engine being retained in the receptacle for disposal when the cover 4: is
removed from the transmission casing.
7 Aside from this advantage of providing a means for directing the oil in the operation of the splashsystem on to, the transmission drums, the'invention also serves as a means to prevent damage to the motor which may opening, of a frame conforming to and fitting in the opening of said case and secured to the under face of the cover, a reticulated transversely arcuate receptacle secured to'the frame under said opening, aplate at one end of the receptacle constituting a bottom for the receptacle into which the oil is received and passed to leave the sedi ment in the receptacle on the bottom of which it is deposited by gravity due to the position of the receptacle, and a shield provided at and secured to the opposite end of the receptacle, one sideof the shield being cut away causing a space to be formed for the entrance of oil as it is thrown in the movement of the flywheel, the opposite side of the shield having a rolled edge opposite said space and constituting a wing inclined over toward the transmission mechanism, serving to catch the oil and deflect it into gresidue 'in the receptacle on thebottom of the receptacle which overlies, covers and passes the oil over entirely all of the transmission drums.
2. The combination with a transmission case having an opening and a cover for the opening, of a frame conforming to and fitting in said opening of said case and secured to the under face of the cover, said frame having an opening of slightly less size than and substantially conforming to the opening in the case, a reticulated transversely arcuate receptacle connected to and carried by the frame and dependingly covering the opening in said frame, the receptacle being of a shape corresponding to and fittingly depending through the opening formed in said case, a plate at one end of the receptacle constituting a bottom for the receptacle into which the oil is received and passed to leave the sediment in the receptacle on the bottom of which it is deposited by gravity due to the position of the receptacle, and a shield provided at and secured to the opposite end of the receptacle, one side of the shield being cut away causing a space to be formed for the entrance of oil as it is thrown during the movement of the fly wheel, the opposite side of the shield having a rolled edge constituting a wing inclined over toward the transmission mechanism, serving to catch the oil and deflect it into the receptacle which overlies, covers and passes the oil over entirely all of the transmission drums.
In testimony whereof they affix their signatures.
