Description

1. F. HE HRINGL Plow Points and Shares.
No.154,139. Patented Aug.18,1874.
I? Q j I Inventor;
#7 m'tnesses. A7 M V UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH F. HERRING, OF MANSFIELD, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOW POINTS AND SHARES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No- 154.139, dated August 18, 1874; application filed November 2'2, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osEPH F. HERRING, of Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow Points and Shares; and that the following is a full, clear, and exact specification thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the'said invention.
My invention consists of an improved plow point and share, made of one piece of metal,
and constructed, substantially as described hereinafter, with clasps and socket, so as to be securely clasped or wedged into ,place on the mold-board of the plow, without the use of rivets, bolts, or screws.
In the drawing, which shows a bottom perspective view of my improvement, A is the point; B, the socket; G, the cutting-edge of the share; D D, the clasps. The point of the moldboard is thrust into socket B, and beneath the overlapping edges of clasps D D. Both socket B and clasps D D are flared, so that the edge and side of the mold-board act like Wedges, tending to force the attached point and share more firmly into place as the plow is used.
When dull, my point and share can be easily knocked off by a few sharp taps from behind, especially if first slightly heated. They can then be sharpened,and when worn out a new one can quickly be set in its place.
My point and share are made of one piece of metal, with the exception of the clasps. These clasps D D may be either riveted or welded into place on the share, or secured by any other suitable or well-known means, such as screwing or bolting. I prefer riveting.
My point and share may be shrunk on the mold-board by being slightly heated before being wedged on. This expands the metal, and when it has cooled it is very rigid.
What I claim as my invention isr The combined plow point and share herein described, consisting of a single steel plate, A 0, having the point-socket A B, formed at its front end to receive and cover the plowpoint, and provided with the clasps D D to hook under the front edge of the mold-board, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
