Be it known that I, RAYMOND M. KELLY, a citizen of the United States,r residing at Pittsburgh, in the count)I of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful I -.iprovement in Distillntion Appafratus, of which the following is u full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates broadly to distillation. apparatus, and more particularly to apparatus of this character for making pure or mixed distillates `from washed benzol.
The principal object of the present invention .is to provide a distillation apparatus comprising a still, and a dephlegmator with improved means for decreasing operating expense and increasing the period of use of the apparatus.
Another object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of this type with means for by-passing the vapors from the still co umn around the dephlegmator when mixed distillates are being made, to thereby avoid undue wear on the dephlegmator.
Still another object of the `invention is to accomplish such by-passing of the vaporsby means of a separable section having permanent deflecting means therein dividing the interior into independent chambers having exterior communicating connections.
.A still further object of thc invention is to provide means for insuring the return of the condensates from the dephlegmator.
The foregoing and other objects, together with their attendant advantages, will be apparent asA the invention becomes better understoodby reference to the accompanying Specification and drawings forming a part thereof, it being premised that changes may be made in the various details and thc Inanner of operation within the scope of theany one skilled in this art, the usual modern benzol still is provided with a retort in which the primary" `vaporization of the charge takes place and a fractionating co1- uuin in ivhich some separation of the more apparatus. At the saine time, it is dsirable to provide means for readily conducting the vapors through the de hlegmator Wihen it is desired to make pure enzine, toluene and i the like.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, there is illustrated the upper` part of a distilling apparatus. The retort,portion of the still is not shown, and reference numeral'2 indicates the fraetionating constructed in sections, as is custoniary in making the columns of benzol stills. VThe top of the column is rovided with a connectin; r section 4. he dephlegmator 5 which is of the usual construction employed 1in benzol-distilling apparatus, is carried and vsupported on the top of the still column. A
se arable section 7 is interposed between the sti l column 2 and theV dephlegmator 5, the separable section 7 being carried on the connecting section 4 of the still column and su -f porting the dephlegmator through a ephlegmator-supporting section 8. The section 'T is made separable, so that it may be applied to the usual benzol stills, which as now constructed, have the dephlegmator supported directly on top ofthe still column.
A bypass 6 is provided around the dephlegmator. The apparatus is arranged so that the vapors rising throu h the still column may be conducted eit er through the dephlegmntor 5 or around the dephlegmator through the bypass 6.
While the dephlegmator may be of any desired construction, it is illustrated as the standard dephlegmntor for benzol-distilling apparatus, provided with the usual pipes 9 mater, ciimposi'tion of the vapors from the still maf' wbe evlily Vcontrolled'so that let 11 for subsequent condensation. The section 7 is preferably provided with an 1nclined partition 12 extending entlrely across the passagewa through the sectlon'to divide the interior t ereof into upper and lower chambers 14 and* 15, respectively. A pipe 1'6'coinmunieates at one end'with-the lower chamber 15 .and at its other end with the ,by-pass. 6, and a second pipe 17 extends from the by-pass into the upper chamber 14. .This second pipeA is preferably provlded with a control valve 18 andthe by-pass 6 and dephleginator outlet 11 may also be respeo4 tively provided with similar valves 19 w20- From the foregoing description 1 t will be apparent, that with the apparatus m operatiiisA if the valves 18 and 20 are open and the valve 19 closed, the. vapors will be conducted' from the` Still column into the lower i `chalnber'l and thence through the pipes 16 and 17, respectively, into the 4upper chamber 14 communicating directly Wlth the -dphlegmaton These vapors having been Aacted' upon by the dephlegmator, will pass through the outlet 11 to a suitable condensing apparatus for the making of pure products.
On' the other-hand, if it is desired to form mixed distillates, Athe ,valves `18 and 2() are closedfand the valve 191 opened so that the veporsifrom, the colunmare conducted from .the lower chamber 15 through the pipe 16 directly4 into ythe dephlegmator by-pass. By

From this pipe the condensates enter one of the sections of the still column through a connection 25. The advantages of the present invention :irisefrom a construction in which excessive wear on the deplegmator is eliminated, and in which the luy-passing of the vapors around the dcphleginator is accomplished by an intermediate solid partition whereby .the me of internal valves in the ntermedmte section is eliminated.
