Description

H. WELLINTN.
Curtain-Rods.
NO IAIOY, Patented Aug. 11,4874.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY WELLINGTON, OF GREEN POINT, NEW YORK.
IMPRovEMEN'r IN CURTAIN-Roos.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,107, dated August 11, 1874 application filed May 29, 1s74.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, HENRY WELLINGTON, of Green Point, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Metallic Ourtain-Rod; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a front view, showing the curtain and rod in actual use. Fig. 2 is a crosssection of the device shown in Fig. 1.
ASimilar letters of reference in the .accompanying drawings denote the same parts.
The object of my invention is to improve theconstruction of the rods or bars employed at the lower edges of window-curtains, so as to provide for the public a better and more ornamental article for that purpose than has heretofore been put into use or on sale; to this end` the invention consists in constructing such lower rod or rail of any suitable material,'and in any suitable form, and incasing it in a metallic shell or tube, which, being ornamented in any design, shall serve to render the rod more beautiful in appearance, and at the same time stronger and more durable.
In the drawings, the center or core a is represented as made of wood, although any other material may be employed. The outer oasing or surface c of the main rod is of metal in tubular form. The upper edge of it is slit to admit the edge of the shade, as shown iu Fig. 2. The ends of the `rod are protected, covered, and ornamented by means of metal knobs d d, which are attached thereto in any suitable manner. A small metal rod, o, (see Fig. 2,) is inserted through the center of the wooden core, leaving the ends projecting, and screwing the outer knobs on their projecting ends by means of a female screw within the knob and male screw on the rod.
I am aware that curtain-rollers situated at the upper end of the curtain have heretofore been provided with a metal casing surrounding said rollers, but not in contact with them,
and I therefore lay no claim to such invention, which could not be employed as the lower or curtain rod of a curtain.
I am also aware thata split or divided roller for curtains has heretofore been employed, the curtain being held between the parts of the roller, and I therefore lay no claim to such device, the essential features of my invention being that the metal tube supports and binds together the divided core and is closed at its `ends and ornamented.
I claim as my invention- A curtain-rod consisting of a divided core, a, between the parts of which the lower end ofthe curtain is held, an outer ornamental metallic shell, c, in contact with, surrounding, and holding together the parts of the core, and an axis, o, screw-threaded at each end to receive the screw-threaded ornamented knobs d d, which close the ends, substantially as described, and for the purpose set set forth.
, HENRY WELLINGTON..
