5 w. SIMON DEVICE FOR USE WITH LACES .OF BOOTS" AND SHOES Filed Oct. 4;. 1924 Ill Patented June 9, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM SIMON, OF NORTH SYDNEY, NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA.
DEVICE FOR usn wrrrr mess on Boers m) SHOES.
. Application filed. Gototer 4:, 1924- SeriaI No. 741,608.
To all whom it may coacewi: V I Be it knownthat I, WILLIAM SIMON. a subject of the King of GreatBritain, residing at 472 Miller Street, North Sydney,
NewSouth Wales, Commonwealth of Aust-raha, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Devlces for Use With Laces of Boots and Shoes, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to devices for use'with the laces of boots and shoes.
In connection with the laces of boots and shoes and the manner in which they are tied or fastened for firmly securing the boot or shoe to the foot, it is generally the practice to leave the ends either in the form of a free bow or free single ends, which in many instances present an untidy appearance and invariably the tying or knotting comes loose rendering the boot or shoe uncomfortable during wear.
According to this invention such general untidy appearance of boots and shoes is entirely obviated by means of a device capable of being temporarily engaged with the aforesaid free bow 'or ends and of being passed underneath the upper of the boots or shoes for disposing beneath such'upper the free how or ends in a flat and comfortable condition, the device being adapted to be disengaged from the said bow or ends upon withdrawal thereof from beneath the said upper. To this end the device is in the form of a flat or rounded member suitable for the purpose and is provided with a channel or recess capable of engagement with the said free bow or ends. If desired, the device may be provided with a blunt or rounded extension adapted to facilitate the introduction of the devicebeneath the upper of the boot or shoe. Such extension is preferably so shaped as-to serve as a guard or shield to the channel or recess and prevent the opposite jaw of the channel or recess damaging the sock or stocking by becoming engaged therewith when the device is being introduced beneath the said upper. The device may also be provided with a hook for engagement with the lace or the inturned portion thereof when it is desired to loosen and remove the boot or shoe. The device facilitates carrying out an improved method of arranging in position the free bow or ends of the lace such method consisting in arranging the free ends in a flat condition beneath the front of the upper of a shoe by engagement of the free bow or ends with the channel. or recess suiiiciently introducing the channelled or recessed port1on of the device beneath frontof suchupper to dispose the free bow or ends in the flat condition and thereafter withdrawing the device, the commencement of such withdrawal effecting the disengagement of the channel or recess from the free how or ends.
In order that the clearly understood and readily carried into effect the same will now be fully described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:-
Figures 1, 2 and 3 are respectively transverse section, side elevation constructional form of the device, according to this invention.
The device is, provided with the channel or recess Z2 and the extension a the latter forming a continuationof the jaw on one side of the channel or recess 6 and being curved inwardly towards the opposite jaw to serve as a guard to such channel or recess a. The opposite end of the device to that provided with the extension 7) is formed with a hook c. The device as a whole is formed with rounded edges and the hook 0 and the jaw of the channel or recess is also rounded off to avoid the presence of parts llable to engage with the sock or stocking, while to facilitate using the device the extension a is formed with a rounded terminal end and is approximately of elliptical or circular cross section and of varying width lengthwise. V The device may bemade of any suitable materlal to any desired size. Although only one construction of the device is hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings it will be understood that modifications may be made therein without departing from the nature of the invention. 7
In making use of the device the free end of the lace is engaged inthe channel or recess 7) and introduced beneath the upper of the boot or shoe by means of the rounded extension a, the device being moved a sulficient distance lengthwise beneath the said upper to arrange the free end in a flat condition. The reversal of the movement brings about disengagement of the device from the free end of the lace and its resaid invention maybe and plan ofone moval from beneath the said upper. By
the insertion of the hook underneath the said upper the free end of the lace can be engaged therewith and withdrawn.
VVha-t I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A device for use with boot and shoe laces comprising a member formed Wi'tha recess capable of engagement With a free part of the lace and with an extension on each side of therecess, the extension on one side of the recess being of greater length than that on theopposite side.
2'. A device for use witl boot and shoe lacesconipr'ising a ineinher provided with a recess having an extension on each side thereof, the extensionon one side being of curved rounded form and of greater length than that on the opposite side and serving as a guard to the recess.
3. A device for use with boot and shoe laces having rounded edges, a recess for engagement with a part ofthe' lace the recess having on each side an extension, the extension on one side or the recess being of greater length than that on the opposite side and of approrirnately round cross section.
A. A device for use with boot and shoe laces comprising a member formed with rounded edges and having at one end arecess and an extension 'ofapprox'imatelyround cross section onone side of the recess and at the other end a hook.
