-.CAR DOOR.
Application filed September 21, 17,922, Serial No. 589,566. Renewedctober 23, 1924;
To all whomz't may con-00m: Y f
Beit known that I, Sannio ZADonozNY, a citizen of Ukraine, residing at Ashley, in the county of Luzerne and Stateof Pennsylvania, have invented certa-innew anduseful ln'iprovements in Car Doors, of which the following is a specification.
My' invention relates to new and usefu improvements in car doors and has specific reference to the horizontal sliding type of doorsusually employed in freight cars.
The primary object of this invention is the production of a car door that is both simple in operation and inexpensive of manufacture and one wherein'the upper and lower edges of the sliding door are provided with a plurality of'rollers adapted for rotary engagement within upper and lower channelways provided upon thev car body for the easy facilitation of the sliding movement of said door within the channclways.
With the above general object in view and` others that will appear as the nature ot' the invention is better understood, the saine consists of the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts 'hereinafter more fully described, shownin" the accompanying drawing and claimed` In the drawing, wherein like reference characters designate corresponding .parts throughout the several vie-ws, i
Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevational view of a portion of a car body showing my improved form of car door in a closed position and further disclosing one end portion of the lower door guideway being broken awa-y and having a means therein for limiting the outward sli-ding movement of said car door,
-Figure 2 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view upon the line ]I*II` of Fig. 1 and looking in the direction of the arrows, Figure 3 is a similar view upon the broken line III-HI of Fig. 1 and also looking in the direction of the arrows,
Figures 4, 5, 6 and 7 are perspective views the lower door guideway associated thercwith and disclosing a platform to be re-' ceived within Vthisguidcway forV permitting type of freight carbody including a roofV 1 and floor'Q, the said car body being also provided with the usual side walls 3, only one thereof being shown in the drawing;
It is to be understood that each of the side walls 3 of the body is provi-ded with the usualV door opening and as a means for closing this opening l have provided the same with an improved type of horizontally sliding door member t. VAdjacent the upper and lower edges of the said'sidewall' opening there issecurely fastened upper and lower door guideways 5 and 6 respectively, and itis to be noted that these said guideways are of a length Substantially equivalent to twice the width of the car door lso as to'permit reception of the door therebetween when the same is slid to a positionfor opening the doorway within the side walls of the car body. f
These upper and lower channelways 5 and The cross web 9 of the lowerguideway 6V is providedwith a plurality of perforations 13 for preventing the accumulation of water therein.
The upper and lower edges of the sliding door 1 have the usual reinforcing cross bars 1a secured upon the inne-r face thereof and secured to the upper and lower marginal portions of the said door areroller carrying brackets 15 and 16, it being noted that the upper roller carrying bracket 15 is so formed as to have the rollers 17 supported therein-upon a vertical axis and that the lower roller carrying bracket 16 is formed as to have its corresponding rolle-rs 18 supported upon a horizontal axis. These roller cariyingbrackets are formed in a manner similarto the channelways 5 and G and each includes spaced walls 2O and 2l joined together by aV web portion 22, and the ywall 21 of each ot' the brackets has va projecting portion 23 formed thereon :tor engagement Vupon the marginal upper and lower edges they' are adapted for rolling contact Vwit-h the outer wall 8 vof the upper channelway 5. The rollers 1S in the lower carrying bracket. 16 are adapted for rolling Contact with the cross web 9 of the spaced walls of the lower channelway 6.
Adjacent one edge ot the upper and lower guideways and 6 t-he sidewall 3 of the car body is provided with a vertically disposed strip member 25 for preventing disen-V gagement of the door e from said channelways in one direction and the connecting webs 9 of the said channelways are provided at their opposite ends with stop blocks 26 for preventing disengagement of the said door from these channel members lwhen being slidY in an opposite direction for ope-ning the doorway in the side wall ofthe car body.
In Fig. 8 I have showira plattform or skid 27 with means adjacent one end as at 28 for reception within the lower channelway 6 when the door t is slid to an open position, this skid 27 adapted to extend at one end within the car body for support.
upon the Hoor thereoi:l for readily permit-ting the entrance and exit of a.) loading vehicle into and -from the car for'loadmg or unloading the same. It 1s t-orbe noted that the opposite end of' this skidv orplat'torm 27 is to be suitably supported at 29V within a wagon or motor truck. Fromy theV above description it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the' art that I have'pro'vided animproved type ot' sliding car door where in any inward or outward thrust upon the same will be readily taken up by the Lipper roller members and consequently allow a free slidingv movement of the door even though considerable pressure may be maintained thereagainst from the inside of the car and further that the tot-al weight of the door is entirely supported upon the bottom set of rollers also assisting the upper rollers for permitting a free sliding movement o't the said door. Y
Minor changes-may be made in the inven-r tion without .departing from the spirit and scope thereof` as claimed. v t 1 t IVhat I claim is .In c-ombination with a car body having a side wall provided with Va door opening therein, a guideway supported upon saidV side wall and adjacent one'edge, of the said door. opening,v said guideway comprising an inner and an outer flange, a `cross-webjoining said flanges Vand a projecting portion extending outwardly from said Vcross-web having perforations therein for receiving bolt 'fastening means, the said langes,crossweb, and projecting portion being formed integrally', a door'disposed for horizontalV sliding movement in said guideway, rollers and a Yroller sup-portingbracket carried by said door and adapted for positioning saidv rollers above said door on substantially a verticalline therewith, the roller supporting bracket carried by the upper edge ot said door comprising a. supporting portion secured to the outer face of the door, a perpendicular web portion carried by the supported portion having spaced laterally openring` slots formed therein, laterally projecting spaced walls carried by said web portio-n positioned above said door, androllers supported upon vertical axes carried by said spaced walls and projecting late-rallyv through said slots and beyond the free edges of said spaced walls to engage the spaced iianges ot the, guideway for preventing binding of the door caused by inward or outward thrusts placed thereon.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
SEMKO ZAD-OROZNY.
