'this invention relates` to key-actuated locks, being' here shown as embodied in padlock, the invention having'V for an object to provide 'a.novel torni of4 key-actuated padlock in which the key is retained in the lor-k when the: latter is open. A further object of the'` invention is to provide a novel form ol lock in which the movable locking element has lined theretoy a number of plunger pins that are controlled in their movenient by the key.
For further comprehension ot the invention, and of the objects andadvantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Theshank ot the shackle enit-ends longitudinally within the easing, adjacent one ot the side walls thereof, and passes longitudinally through one arm of an L-shaped block 14 vslidable longitudinally of the casing the other' arm t this block extending transversely of the 1 but showeasingA from side to side thereof. Fixed within the easing` is a guide member 16 that is `spaced between the ends of thev casing and engages one side wall ot the latter, a space being lei't between the member 16 and the other side wall of the casing to accommodate the arm of the block 14, through which the shackle passes. Thispin is adapted to be engaged, when the lock is closed,y by a pair ot' leaves 30 that are pivoted on the projecting end ofthe mem-k ber` 16 to swing parallel to theface vof thel latter and which projecten opposite sides oi5 the pin Qwhen `the lock is open. These leaves are urged toward one another by `means of a wire spring3l1that is engaged at its ends with the respectiveleaves'.
The shank ot thel shackle 13 is normally held against longitudinal Vmovement with respect to the Vblock 14,.-but is rotatable therein to allow ot the beak ofthe shackle being swung' to;r one side to be -free of the easing'. As herefshown a transverse vpin 34 in the shackle shank projects across one end oli the block while the other inner endof the shackle shank is formed onone side with a fiat-bottomed transverse-groove in which eng-'ages the-,free 'endof a linger 3G- that is pivoted on a stud 37 fixed 'to the. block 1^- and adapted to swing transversely ot the shackle shank, a spring 38 urgingthe linger into the groove 35. A stopA 40 on the block 14 limits movement of the finger 36 under the influence of the ''.lllll Lille lJUllUCl l5 UIUSBU, d5 lll Big5. e and 5, the shackle is pushed inward and the leaves 30 extend across the end of the pin S25 and prevent the shackle moving outward.V To release the lock the key is inserted `in the opening 18 and its tapered forward end engages between the leaves 30 and spreads the same apart, freeing the pin 25. Wlhen the key reaches its extreme inward position the pins 2l register with the apertures 52 in the key and the shackle is then freed and is pushed outward by the spring 23, the key being locked in the casing. In
Vclosing the lock the shackle is simpl y pushed inward until the pins 21 are to the rear of the slot 17 when the leaves 30 swing over the end of the pin 25 and hold the. parts in this position. The key may then be Withdrawn. VIf it is desired to withdraw the key with the lock open the shackle is swung through an arc of kone-hundred and eighty degrees and then pulled outwardly until its inner end passes the linger 36. The shackle is then pushed inwardly, bearing on the tinger 36 Vand causing the block 14; to be moved to ree'the key. l/slhen theshackle is swung backto its original position with its beak in rcgistrywith the-opening l2 and pushed inward the linger 36 is pushed to one side by the beveled end 42 of the shackle sha-nk.

myself to the precise construction herein disclosed, and the right is reserved to the use of keys with any number of apertures and to all changes and modilications coming within the scope of the invention as de-l lined in theappended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent ot the 'United States is as iollows:
l. A padlock comprising a casing, ablock slidable longitudinally in said casing, a shackle .mounted in said block for rotary movement, a plunger pin fixed to said block, an apertured guide member in said casing through which said pin projects, a spring urging said shackle to unlocked position, and a device adapted for release by a key engaging over the end of said pin to hold the shackle in locked position. said device be- 'Lllltl it (.lUVlU ltltpbll lOl.' A padlock comprising a casing, a block slidable longitudinally in said casing, a shackle mounted 'on said block for rotary movement, a plurality of plunger pins fixed to said block'` and extending longitudinally of the casing, a guide element in the casing having longitudinal apertures to receive the said pinsand a transverse slot for insertion of a key, and apair of leaves pivoted on said guide'element and normally projecting across the end of one of said pins to retain the shackleV locked.'`

A padlock comprising a casing, ablock slidable longitudinally in said casing, a shackle mounted on said block for rotary movement, a plurality of'pllunger pins fixed to said yblock and extending longitudinally of the casing, a guide element in the casing having-longitudinal apertures to receive the said pins and a transverse slot for insertion of a key, and a 4pair of leaves pivoted on said guide elements'to retain thezshackle locked, and a key having` a pointed end adapted for insertion between the said leaves to free the latterfrom the said pin.
5. A padlock comprising a casing, a block slidable longitudinally in said casing, a shackle mounted on said block for rotary movement, a plurality of plunger pins xed to said block and extending longitudinally of the casing, a guide element in the casingA having longitudinal apertures to receive the said pins and a transverse slot for insertion of a key, and a pair of leaves pivoted on said guide elements to retain the shackle locked, and a key having a pointed 'cud adapted for insertion between the said leaves to free the latter from the said pin, said key having a` number of' apertures ltherein which register with the other plunger pins when the key is fully inserted in the lock.
