UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IGNATZ HERZOG AND WILLIAM BULLOCK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
' IMPROVEMENT IN CLOSING THE MOUTHS OF GAS-RETORTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,045, dated Angust 11, 1874; application filed February 12, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, IGNATZ HERZOG and WILLIAM BULLooK, both of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Lid for Retorts; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make andhse the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing Figure 1 represents a longitudinal central section of this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
"This invention relates to a mode of securing the lid of retorts for coal-gas, &c.; and consists in the arrangement of a rod or stem, which carries the retort-lid and extends through thelocking-screw, this being made hollow for the purpose, in such a" manner that by said rod the lid can be adjusted in position on the retortmouth with facility, and, furthermore, can be revolved or oscillated so that any unevenness caused by the accumulation of tar or dirt on the surface of the retort-mouth is removed therefrom by the action of the sharp edges of the lid.
In the drawing, the letter A designates the neck or mouth-piece of a retort, which is made in the usual form, and is provided on its outer extremity with aflange, B, forming a seat for the lid or cover 0. This lid is held upon its seat through the pressure exerted by a locking-screw, D, which is provided with a handle, a, and works in a bridge or cross-bar, E, pivoted to one of two arms, F F, arranged opposite each other on the flange B. One end of the bridge E is loose and catches in a recess,
b, in the other of the arms F, so that the bridge, together with the lid, can be swung back off of the mouth of the retort. The lid is provided with a projecting edge or rim, 0, which is made sharp, or nearly so, and rests upon the seat B of such lid. The lockingscrew D is hollow, and contains an inner rod or stem, G, one end of which is secured to the lid (3, and the other end, which extends beyond the outer end of the locking-screw, is provided with a handle, (1. This rod G forms an instrument for moving the retort-lid. in any direction, and a. so for raising the same, provided the locking-screw D is loosened to afford sufficient play.
By the sharp edge of the lid an exceedingly tight joint or connection is effected with the plain surface of the retort-mouth, so as to require no luting for this purpose. This edge also forms a scraper, in that it serves to remove or scrape off any sediment, such as tar or dirt, collecting on the mouth of the retort, this being effected by oscillating or revolving the lid through the rod G in proximity to the retortmouth.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The rod G, extending through the lockingscrew D and carrying the lid of the retort, said rod serving to impart to the lid arevolving or oscillating motion, substantially as and for the purpose described.
This specification signed by us'this 28th day of J anuary, 1874.
