IMPROVEMENT IN WOOD-BENDING MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,997, dated August 11, 1874; application filed July 22, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, GABRIEL ALBIN and JOSEPH P. ALBIN, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wood-Bending Machines for Coffin Sides; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved apparatus as arranged for use. Figs. 2 and 3 are like views, respectively, of the main and supplementary frames; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the metal clamps.

The design of our invention is to facilitate the bending of coflin sides, so as thereby to lessen the expense of such operation; and it consists in the peculiar construction of the main and supplementary frames and the means employed for combining the same, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.

In the annexed drawing, A and A represent the side rails of our main frame connected together at suitable points by cross-bars B and B, and having upon its upper face the general shape and dimensions of a coffin side. At its head end the frame is extended "ertically upward, and within the inner face of such vertical portion A is provided a series of horizontal grooves, a and a, that have each a width that is substantially equal to the thickness of a COffiIl side, while said grooves are separated by a space that is equal to their width. The lower side of the frame, at its foot end, is sloped outward and upward, so as to give to the same a wedge shape, while upon'each edge, at or near its longitudinal center, is provided a lug, a, that extends laterally outward, and has its upper and lower sides formed upon double inclines, as shown. Between each groove 0 is fitted a supplemental frame, 0, which conforms in shape and lateral dimensions to the like features of the head portion of the main frame, and from said head extends, to a point just beyond the lugs to and a, a lug, c, which corresponds in size and shape to the lugs a and a; is secured to or upon each edge of said supplemental frame in such position as r to bring it in a line vertically with said lug a. A cofiin side, D, (properly steamed,) is now placed upon the main frame, its end being contained within the lower groove a, and upon its upper side is placed one of the supplemental frames G. A clamp, E, which has the form shown in Fig. 4, is placed over the lugs c and a, and caused to embrace the upper side of the former and the lower side of the latter with sufficient firmness to hold said supplemental frame closely upon said coffin side, and the latter firmly upon said main frame. Other coffin sides, D, and supplemental frames, 0, are placed alternately upon those described, and combined therewith by means of the clamps E and E until the upper groove a is filled, after which a bar, F, is placed across the upper coflin side, and upon its projecting ends receives the engaging ends of the upper of said clamps. At their lower ends the coffin sides D and D are separated by means of suitable bars G and G, and are secured in place by a clamp, H, which passes across the upper of said coffin sides, down alongside the edges of the same, and at its ends embraces the lower inclined surface of the main frame. The frames, with their contents, are now stored away until the latter isfixed in shape, after which said parts are separated.

This improvement effects an important saving in expense, as the bending-frames can be constructed of any desired capacity, and at a fraction of the cost required for frames that receive but one cofiin side, while in the matter of storage a great and important saving in space is effected.

Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of our invention, what we claim as new is- The main bending-frame, constructed as described, and provided with the side lugs a and a, and the supplemental frames 0 and 0 provided with the side lugs c and c, in combination with each other and with the clamps E and E, substantiallyas andfor the purpose specified.
