UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDGAR JEROME, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-CRACKER PISTOLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153.963, dated August 11, 1874; application led February 19, 1874.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR JEROME, of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented an Improved Fire- Cracker Holder, of which the following is a specication This fire-cracker holder resembles a pistol. The barrel is adapted to hold the fire-cracker; the fuse, or stem, is passed through an opening in the barrel, and held beneath a Enger, and the punk, or other igniting material, is Within a holder representing a pistol-hammer, and itis swung by the trigger into contact with the stem of the tire-cracker. A spring serves to project the ignited end of the punk, and a stop-Enger determines the position.
ln the drawing, Figure lis a longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a plan, and Fig. 3 is an elevation of the said fire-cracker holder.
The barrel a is at the end of the stock 0r body b, that connects the barrel and handle c. These parts will usually be made of cast metal, in two half-sections, fitting together longitudinally, and united by the screws 2 4. In the barrel a is an opening, through which the fuse projects. It is preferably made as a longitudinal slot, 3, through which the fuse or stem of the cracker is drawn, said-.cracker being entered at the front end of the barrel; and when a shoulder or stop is provided within the barrel, as shown, the fire-cracker is arrested, so that thefuse is not compressed, but is free to burn when ignited. A finger, e, is provided, beneath which the stem or fuse is passed, as shown, so as to hold it in position to be ignited. It is best to employ a wire for this finger, so that it may spring slightly in receiving the fuse. The holder l receives the punk, and a suitable spring is employed to project the burning end of the punk against the stop-iinger s to determine its correct position. I have shownarubber spring, t, passing around lugs 6 on the punk-holder, and at the back of the punk. This punk-holder Z is made as an open tube, so that the punk may be easily inserted and moved forward as it is consumed, and is shown as swingingupon the axis 4, which also forms one of the connectingscrews for the halves of the pistol, and thel lower end of the stock of this punk-holder forms'a trigger, o. The spring t throws the punk-holder back into the normal position shown in Fig. 3, and when the trigger is pressed, the burning end of the punk is brought into contact with the stem, as seen in Fig. l.l 1t is necessary that the stem and punk be brought into contact with suiicient pressure to cause the ignition of the stem with rapidity.
1 claim as my inventionl. Atoy fire-cracker pistol, made with a sin gle stationary barrel, 'a longitudinal slot for passing the stem, a swinging tubular punk-holder, open from end to end, a spring to throw the punk-holder back, and atrigger to move it forward, substantially as set forth.
2. The iinger e, for holding the fire-cracker fuse while being ignited, substantially as set forth.
3. The. stop-finger s, combined with a spring that projects the punk against the stop-finger, substantially as set forth.
4. A toy lire-cracker pistol made with a punk-holder, formed of a tube open from end to end, as and for the purposes set forth.
Signed by me this 12th day of February, A. D. 1874.
EDGAR JEROME.
