UNITED STATES 1,539,351 PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES D. nnannnnrr, or NEWARK, OHIO.
DISPLAY APPARATUS.
AppIication filed July 15, 1922. Serial No. 575,190.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, CHARLES D. DEAR-V playing merchandise in show windows and has for its object the provision of means whereby suits of clothes or garments may be effectively displayed and shifted in position whereby all sides of the garment may be viewed. The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings and will be here1nafter fully set forth.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a. plan view of one embodi ment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section through a portion of the apparatus.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a casing 1, the top 2 of which maybe a part of or flush with the floor of the show window, a portion of which is indicated conventionally at 3. The casing 1 may be of any material possessing sufficient strength and durability and is of proper form to extend around the sides of the show window, as
will be readily understood upon reference,
to Fig. 1, The casing encloses the ope ating mechanism and is provided in its top with a central longitudinally extending slot 4 through which the hub 5 of a base or plat form 6 extends. A plurality of these platforms or bases is provided and they are spaced equi-distantly through the extent of the slot 4-, as will be readily understood. Depending from the hub 5 of each base or platform is a stub shaft 7 to which is secured a gear wheel 8 adapted, in the opera-- tion of the apparatus, to mesh alternately with racks 9 disposed upon opposite sides of the casing, as shown. As the pinion travels over the respective racks, the bases or platforms 6 will be rotated alternately in opposite directions and, therefore, articles displayed thereon will be turned so that they may be viewed from all angles. In the particular application of my invention for which it is especially intended, I secure upon each base or platform 6 a dummy or display figure, upon which the garments may be draped in a well-known manner and persons standing in front of the show window will be enabled to view the garments from all sides without being required to shift their positions or subjecting themselves to any inconvenience.
The shafts 7 have depending pins or extensions 10 which are secured in any convenient manner to a sprocket chain 11 which is CO-GXtGIlSlVB with the slot f and is disposed immediately below the said slot, being guided at the angles or corners of the show window by idler sprockets and being actuated by a sprocket 12 which may be located at any convenient point of the casing 1 im-. mediately ad acent the chaln so as to mesh P therewith This sprocket 12 is carried by the upper end of a sleeve or hub 13 rising from a beveled gear 1a which is rotatably supported by a post 15 mounted upon the bottom of the casing 1, as shown in Fig. H
The gear l lmeshes with a pinion 16 on the end of a driving shaft 17 which extends through the side of the casing 1 and may be connected with a motor located at any convenient point. It will be readily understood that rotation of the driving shaft 17 imparts motion through the described gearing to the chain 11 and thereby causes travel of the shafts 7 with the gears 8 thereon and the platforms 6 along the slot a in the top of the casing. The travel of the chain will bring the gears 8 successively into engage ment with the several racks 9 so that, as the platforms are carried along the front of the show window, they will be successively rotated alternately in opposite directions, as previously described.
To guide and support the platforms during their travel, I secure rails 18 to the under side of the top 2 of the casing along the sides of the slot 4 in such position that the edges of the rails will project slightly inwardly beyond the sides of the slot so as to receive the lower end of the hub 5 of the I also pro-'- platform, as shown in Fig. 2. vide brackets 19 at intervals throughout the casing which brackets project inwardly from the sides of the casing and are so constructed as to present notches or slots 20 which receive the peripheries of the several gears 8 and are provided on their opposed edges with ribs or projections 21 constituting guide tracks whereby the gears will be held against oscillation and maintained in engagement with the respective racks 9.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is:
In a display apparatus, the combination of a casing having an endless slot in its top, rails secured Within the casing at the sides of the said slot, platforms disposed above the casing and having depending hubs extending into the slot and resting slidably upon said rails, shafts depending from said hubs between the rails, gears upon the several shafts, racks secured upon the opposite sides of the casing to be engaged successively by the said gears Wherebyto rotate the shafts and the platforms alternately in opposite directions, upper and lower guides upon the sides of the casing within the same to receive the said gears, a chain connecting the lower ends of the said several shafts and co-extensive with the slot in the top of the casing, means Within the casing for guiding said chain, and means for driving said chain.
Intestnnony whereof I- aflix my signature.
CHARLES D. DEARDURFF. 11. 8.
