Description

May 19, 1925.
G. IOHNSTON CRUSHING ROLL l' iled March l4, 192s 3 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented May 19, 1925.
UNITED STATES GEORGE JOHNSTON, 0F MANCHESTER, ENGLAND.
CRUSHING ROLL.
Application filed March 14, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE JoHNsroN, a British subject, and a resident of Manchester, England, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Crushing Roll, of which the following is the specification.
The invention has for its object to provide for crushing mills and the like, and for other kindred purposes in which massive and weighty'single piece rollers or cylinders have been used, a demountable roll which while possessing the requisite sturdiness, stiffness and resistance is separable for transport into a number of parts none of which Weighs in excess of the moderate figure of a single load for mule or other transport in inaccessible regions.
A roll or the like made according to the invention comprises essentially two shells externally cylindrical and internally eonical and adapted to be secured coaxially together by any convenient means with their lesser internal peripheries adjoining. The shells are internally reinforced by a series of annular discs conical counterpartly to the interiors of the shells on their peripheries.
These discs are drawn towards one another in opposite pairs within the shells by bolts or the like with or without springs in compression on them.
A central shaft is provided and the discs may form a driving connection between this and the shells or separate discs, or spiders may connect the shells (forexample, an in ward flange or flanges on them) with the shaft (for example a peripheral flange on it It is found that with an adequate number of discs, shells adequate in strength when reinforced by them may be made sulliciently light for the purposes set forth even in the case of comparatively large rolls.
An example of the improved construction is shown on three accompanying sheets of drawings, Figure 1 being a sectional side elevation (with the reinforcing discs partly in section and partly in elevationtwhile Figure 2 is a front elevation and Figure 3 a sectional elevation of a detail.
In this example, the externally cylindrical internally conical roll-forming shells A, B are provided with inward flanges A B by which they are initially secured together. These flanges also serve to connect the shells with a flange C on a shaft G, discs D being fitted between the inner peripheries of the Serial No. 625,060.
shells and the periphery of the shaft for this purpose, and the whole being secured together by bolts D and keys D In addition to these discs I), which as well as making driving connection between shells and shaft serve as reinforcing means, there are six discs E, F, G, H, J, K, arranged outside the discs D. The discs G and K are connected by bolts G T 1 to the opposite discs D, the discs H and E by bolts F and J As will be seen more clearly in Figure 3, springs L are arranged in each case between the nuts L and one of the discs, while apertures are provided in the outer discs for access to the belts in the inner discs.
What I claim is:
1. A built-up roll for the purposes set forth comprising two shells externally cylindrical and internally conical secured together coaxially, in combination with means for securing the roll upon a shaft and means for internally reinforcing the shells comprising a series of pairs of annular discs counterpartly conical on their peripheries and drawn together in pairs.
2. A built-up roll for the purposes set forth comprising two shells externally cylindrical and internally conical, inturned flanges thereon, a shaft having a flange thereon, and discs secured to the shell flanges and to the flange on the shaft, in combination with a series of pairs of discs internally reinforcing the shells, and means for securing the discs in place in opposite pairs.
3. A built-up roll for the purposes set forth comprising two shells externally cylindrical and internally conical secured together coaxially, a central shaft. and means for securing the roll thereon, in combination with a series of pairs of discs reinforcing the shells, and bolts. securing each pair together independently of the other pairs.
4-. A built-up roll for the purposes set forth comprising two shells externally cylindrical and internally conical secured coaxially together, a series of pairs of discs reinforcing the shells, bolts securing each pair of discs together, springs in compression between the bolts and the discs, a central shaft and means for securing the roll thereon.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
GEORGE JOHNSTON.
