Be it known that I1 Miei-man PAmnoN, a citizen of the United `States, and resident of Barberton, in the county of Summit and 5 State ot' Ohio, have invented certain new and useful lmprovementsin Match Machines, of which the following` cation. y
Thisinvention relates to match machines employing endless carrier cha-ins for the match splints, having reference especially to mechanism whereby the carrier chain is automatically raised and lowered in the region ot the composition-applying station during the stopping and the starting, respectively7 oit the match machine, in'order to obviate all liability at such times ot dragging the splints upon and over the composition applying` devices. Mechanism 'for-the purpose mentioned is set out in Letters Patent of the United States llo. 1,165,536. dated December 2S, 1915, .by reference to which it will he seen that the composition devices oi` the match machine therein illustrated include a composition-applying roller which' is operatively connected with the chain actuatingi` mechanism and also `with an electric vices under the influence and control of they electric motor for accomplishing the timely raising and lowering ot the carrier chain` all ot Which will be hereinafter described and claimed. i

The sprocket Wheel 22 is connected with and driven from a sprocket Wheel 27 on one end of the. shaft 12 by means ot a chain 28; the mixer and roller thus beine; driven at a normal speed during the progression oif the match chain.
The sprocket Wheel28is connect-ed by means ot a chain 29 with va sprocketwheel 30 on a suitably mounted shaft 31 which is gearedtothe shatt 32 of an electric motor 3B, which, being in operation `when the match machine is idle, eltects through the transmission gearing the rotation ot the ratchet Wheel 2a and its shatt 18 with a l on relatively slow movement with corresponding motion of the mixer and roller.
The splint chain is supported and guided in its travel across the composition-applying roller by parallel bridge bars 34 carried by a supporting frame k35 which is hinged at one end on the shaft 12. The opposite end of this frame carries a hexagonal drum 36 about which the splint chain is flexed in its travel. n the sides yof the frame are laterally-projecting anti-friction rollers 37 against which bear sector cams 38 carried by a rock shaft 39 havingits bearings in boxes on the frame for the composition vat, whereby when the shaft- 89 is properly actuated the hinged frame and bars Sli, with tlieportion of the splint chain thereon, may be raised or low- Cil cred to move the splints from or into the pa-th of the composition roller, 4as desired.
Fast on the rock-shaft 39 is a levert() which is 'connected by means of a link llwith the usual clutch devices of the main drive mechanism of thek match machine, whereby when the rock-shaft is moved in one direction to lower the splint chain, such devices are actuated to start the match machine., and when the rock-shaftpis moved inthe opposite direction to raise the splint chain such devices are shifted to stop the match machine.
The foregoing described mechanism, exceptingas hereinafter described, is similar in construction and operation to mechanism illustrated in Patent No. 1,165,536 aforesaid.
ln pursuance of my present invention I dispense with the fluid-actuated hoisting mechanism yand the associated gearing and contact making and breaking devices shown and described in said patent for the pur-V pose of raising` and lowering' the splint earrier, and also of effecting the stopping and the s arting of the match machine, and, instead, provide mechanism of the following preferred construction and operation: Mounted in. suitable bearings located above and laterally of the composition mechanism, is a shaft 4-2 which extends longitudinally of the machine, and is provided adjacent the motor with a loose kpulley i3 which is connected by means of a belt {ttwith a smaller pulley l5 fast on the shaft 32 of the electric motor; a'suitable clutch being provided whereby the pulley can be temporarily locked on the shaft when the motor is energized. rlhis clutcl1,'in the form showin comprises a sector 16' which is keyed on the saaft, laterally of the pullev,.
normally in contact with a trip member by means ofa retracting spring elf.) which is secured to the sector and to a liXed stud y50, the peripheral flange Il? of the sector' in that case occupyingthe position mentioned `between the runs-of the belt. The trip member comprises one 'arm 51 of a lever which is fulcrumed on a suitablydisposed stud 52, such arm being held normally in the path of the sector arm by means of a torsion spring 53 on the stud. Depending from the other arm of the lever is a hand rod 54. The relation of the parts just described is such that if, during the operation of the motor, thehand rod be raised the lever will be swung to depress o the trip arm 51 below the sector arm 4:8 and the spring 4:9 will pull the sector in a manner to draw its flange 47. between the opposing run of the traveling belt 14 and the rim of the pulley, whereupon the contiguous portion of the belt will forcibly grip the flange and positively rotate the sector and its shaft 42. (See Fig. 3). If the hand rod be released to permit the trip arm to resume its normal position, immediately after the escape of the sector arm, the latter arm will, upon a complete rotation of the sector and shaft, again abut againstthe trip arm and be held thereby with the sector flange in idle position in readiness for av succeeding operation.
Fast on the shaft 42 is a bevel gear 55 Utl which meshes With a similar gear .56 on ar short shaft 57 having its bearings in brackets 58 on the main frame-structure. On one end of this shaft isa crank arm 59 which is connected by means of a link 60 with an arm 61 fast on the rock-shaft 39 carrying the sector cams 38, the relation of the parts being such that the chain is in down or active position when the shaft 4:2 is at rest. At this juncture the match machine is in operation, and the motor 33 is idle. To stop the machine the motor is'energized, and the trip arm 51 is moved to free the sector arm, whereupon the sector and its shaft make one complete rotation andstop. The ratio of the bevel gearing is such that in `the rotation of the shaft 42, the shaft 57,
makes one half rotation, thus partially turnlng the rock-shaft 39 and its sectorcams 38 in a manner to raise the frame 35 and bars 34, and the part of the carrier supported thereon. The movement of the rock-shaft lever l() alsopullsthe link 41 and releases the clutch devices of the main drive mechanism of the match machine, thereby stopping the latter. lVhile the match machine istidle the motor continues in operation, and. through its gear connections vwith the sprocket wheel 23 slowly rotates the mixer and the composition roller; it being noted that, in the present instance, the reducing gearing between the motor and the shaft 31 comprises ar worm 62 in mesh with a thereon,

Thisdone the current is switched from the motor until the next succeeding stopping operation, and so on.
There is preferably provided an additional pair of sector cams 38 to facilitate the operation of raising' and lowering the carrier supporting frame'.` These cams are borne by a rock-shaft 39 having its bearings at the side of the vat frame opposite to the rock-shaft for the ot-herpair of cams. The rock-shaft 39 is provided with an arm 61 which is connected by 'means of a link 60 with a crank arm 59 on a short cross-shaft 57 adjacent the longitudinal shaft 42. vOn the two shafts are fixed two intermeshing bevel gear wheels 56 similar to the wheels 55, 56, and hence during'the rotation of the shaft -l-Q the two sets of wheels andthe crank and link connections with the respective rock shafts are concurrently actuated;
. It is to be understood that my invention is not limited to the specific form or forms of mechanism herein disclosed, as the same may be modified within the principle of my invention and the scope of the appended claims.

In a match machine, the combination of a splint carrier, a composition applying element below the path of the carrier, mechanism for actuating` said element during` the operation of thev carrier, an electric motor, operative connection between the motor and said element, a vertically-movable carrier support, means for raising' and lowering said support, normally inactive transmission means between the motor and said raising and lowering means, a clutch device manually operative to render said transmission means active, and automatically operative, when released, to determine the period in actionl of thetransmission means.

In a match machine, the combination of a splint carrier, a composition applying; element below the path of the carrier, mechanism for actuating said element during the operation lof the carrier, an electric `motor, operative connection between the motor and said element, a vertically-movable carrier support, means for raising and lowering said support, transmission means between the motor and said raising and lowering means, means whereby said transmission means can be rendered idle and active at predetermined intervals, and means actuated by said raising and loweringfor determining the operation of the carrier.

gearing between the two shafts, a normally loose pulley on said second shaft, an electric motor, transmission means, including* a belt, between said motor and the pulley, a clutch device, a spring acting' to force said device between the beltand the pulley, and a manually operative trip element normally located to maintain the clutch device in idle position against the action ofthe spring.
6. In a match machine, the combination with the movable carrier support and its raising` and lowering cam element, of a shaft, a crank thereon, connections between said crank and the cam element, a second shaft, gearing between the two shafts, a normally loose pulley on said second shaft, an electric motor, transmission means, including a belt, between said motor and the pulley, a clutch device including a` sector fast on said second shaft and having a peripheral flange adjacent the rim of the pulley and also a stop portion, a spring acting to position saidsector with its flange between the belt and the ypulley yand a manually operative trip element normally located in the path ofsaid stop portion so as to position the clutch device with its flange free from the belt. y 7.
