To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH (l. DONNELLY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Barborton, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Match-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of match machines in which is employed an endless carrier by means of which splints, in separated rows, are transported through the match making path, including a paraffin applying station and a head-composition applying station or stations.
The object of my invention is to provide for such machines a mechanism of simple and eflicient construction and operation whereby the parts of the splint carrier located immediately above the paraffin and composition applying stations .can .be positively and rapidly lifted out of action and at the same time the machinecan .be stopped, (although the composition-applying roller continues to rotate as usual) thereby obviating-any liability of the carrier, with its depending splints, overrunning the respective stations when the machine is being thrown out of operation.
In the present illustrative form of embodiment of my invention, I employ raising and lowering mechanism for the carrier and brake means for the mainshaft of the match machine, together with devices which can be actuated with facility and rapidity .to throw off the power from the .main shaft, apply the brake means to the shaft, and at the same time actuate the said mechanism to raise a partor parts .of the carrierand lift the splints from the paraffin and composition applying paths.
The invention comprises novel featuresof construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and claimed,

Referring to the drawings, 10 designates a part of the endless splint-carrier chain of a continuous match machine, which chain, in the form illustrated, comprises a series of perforated plates linked together at their edges, and provided with marginal gear racks 11 throughout the length of the chain. This chain is suitably supported and guided throughout its circuit, and pairs of spaced power-driven gear wheels are arranged at intervals in the circuit so as to mesh with the gear racks and impel the chain; said wheels being appropriately geared with and driven from the main shaft 12 of the match machine as illustrated, for example, in U. S. Patent No. 528,457, dated October 30, 1894.
A pair of these gear wheels is indicated at 13, their shaft 14 bearing at one end a sprocket wheel 15 which is operatively connected through suitable gearing with the main shaft. As such gearing is fully-set out in the patent referred to it is deemed unnecessary herein to show or describe it in detail.
Splints are inserted into the successive rows of perforations of the chain plates at the front or receiving end of the machine, and are thereby transported through the match making path, in which are included the paraffin containing tank 16 with the contents of which the traveling splints are treated, and one or more composition applymachine, and associated wheel, the free end of which arm ing structures, of which one is illustrated at 17, by means of which the composition for the ignitible bulbs or heads is applied to the free ends of the splints after they leave the paraiiin bath.
18 designates a power-driven shaft having its hearings in suitable standards in rear of the main shaft of the match machine. This shaft 18 is continuously driven from a convenient source of power, as, for example, an electric motor 19, the shaft of which is operatively connected with the shaft 18 through meshing gear wheels 20, 21 on the respective shafts.
On the shaft 18 is loosely mounted a sprocket wheel 22 which is geared by means of a chain 23 with a similar wheel 24 on the main shaft of the match machine. a suitable clutch being provided to lock or unlock the wheel to or from the shaft 18 as desired. In the present instance an ordinary band clutch is employed, the same comprising a band 25 which, encircling a hub 26 on the sprocket wheel, is connected at its ends to the pivot pin of a tension arm 27 on the depends into the path of a sliding clutch cone 28 on the shaft 18. When the cone is moved toward the wheel 22 the tension arm is raised in a manner to tighten the band on the hub and thus clutch the sprocket wheel to the other of the cylinder as desired.

The outer portion of the lever lever is connected by means of a link 40 with one arm a1 of the shipper lever above referred to, which lever is connected to the rod 42 of a pneumatically controlled piston head 43 working in a cylinder 44 on a standard l5. hen the compressed air is admitted to one end of the cylinder the piston is instantly actuated to pull the attached arm of the shipper lever 30, which lever thereupon retracts the cone 28 and releases the clutch band on the hub of the sprocket wheel 22, and at the same time said lever operates the rock-lever 37 in a manner to raise the brake lever and apply the brake block effectively to the opposing brake wheel on the main shaft. Simultaneously with the performance of these functions, the shipper lever effects through appropriate connections hereinafter described the raising of movable chain supporting structures 53, 54k directly above the paraffin tank and the composition chest respectively. These structures may be of any usual or approved construction. In the present instance the structure 53 comprises a pair of spaced bridge rails 55 carried by a supporting frame 56 which is hinged at one end to brackets 57 on the adjacent frame posts of the match machine so as to over-hang the paraflin tank and maintain the rails in position to support and guide the marginal edges of the carrier chain during its traverse above the tank. By raising or lowering this structure 53 the portion of the splint chain supported on the bridge rails may be correspondingly moved, so as to raise the splints from or lower them into'the paraflin bath. The structure 5% comprises spaced bridge rails 58 carried by a supporting frame 59 which is hinged at one end on the transverse shaft 14 carrying the pair of chain-driving gear wheels 13 above referred to. The opposite end of this frame carries a hexagonal drum 60 about which the splint chain is flexed in its travel. On the sides of the frame 59 are laterallyprojecting anti-friction rollers 61 against which bear sector cams 62 carried by a rockshaft 63 having its bearings in brackets on the frame 64 of the composition structure, whereby when the shaft 63 is properly actuated, the hinged structure 54:, with the proximate portion of the splint chain, may be raised or lowered to move the splints from or into the path of the usual composition roller 65, as desired.

This end of the shipper lever is connected by means of a link 69 with the depending arm of the bell-crank lever 66, the other arm of the lat ter being connected by means of a link 70 with a crank-arm 71 on an elevated rockershaft 72 which, extending from side to side of the machine, has its bearings in appropriate brackets on the frame posts. By this construction motion is transmitted from the shipper-lever to the rocker-shaft 72.

The shaft 73 is provided about midway between its ends with a crank arm 75, which is connected by means of a link 77 with a bracket 78 on a cross-rod of the structure 53. The shaft 74 is provided at its respective ends with crank arms 7 6 being connected by links 79 with cranlcarms 80 on the cam shaft 63. The rocker- shafts 72, 73, 74: are provided at their ends with parallel levers 81, 82, 83, respectively; the lower arms of which on each side of the machine are connected by a rod 84 and the upper arms are connected by a rod 85. Consequently when the rocker-shaft 72 is actuated by movement of the shipper lever the remaining shafts 7 3, 74: are correspondingly moved; thus effecting through the appropriate crank and link connections the raising or lowering of the structures 53, 54, as above described; that is to say, when air is admitted to the cylinder to operate the piston to stop the machine, the power is thrown off from the main shaft, the brake is applied and the two chain supporting structures are raised; and when air is admitted to the cylinder to operate the piston to start the machine, the power is applied to the main shaft, the brake is released and the two supporting structures are lowered.
The composition applying mechanism is (or may be) of usual construction, that is to say, it includes a vat within which are rotatably mounted a composition mixer and the composition-applying roller above mentioned, together with variable driving devices therefor, whereby when the match machine is in actual operation, the said mixer and roller are rotated at a normal speed to effect, respectively the intimate mixing of the composition and the uniform application thereof to the ends of the depending splints on the traveling carrier, and whereby, when the machine is stopped, the said mixer and roller are rotated at a relatively slow speed to continue the stirring of the composition and thus prevent its settling and thickening within the vat and upon the roller as described in Letters Patent of the United States No. 880,354, dated February 25, 1908.
I claim 1. In a match machine, the combination with a splint carrier, actuating means therefor, a vessel below the path of the carrier, and a vertically-movable carrier support above said vessel, of means for raising and lowering said support, pneumatic motor means including a manually-operative controlling device, and connections whereby the carrier actuating means and the support raising and lowering means are simultaneously operated by said pneumatic means, so as to raise and stop the carrier instantaneously, or similarly to lower and start the carrier, thereby insuring uniform treatment of the successive rows of splints with the contents of the vessel.

In a match machine, the combination with a splint carrier, actuating means therefor, a brake mechanism, a vessel below the path of the carrier, and a vertically-movable carrier support above said vessel, of means for raising and lowering said support, pneumatic motor means including a manuallyoperative controlling device, and connections whereby the carrier actuating means, the brake mechanism, and the supportraising and lowering means are simultaneously operated by said pneumatic means, so as to raise and stop the carrier instantaneously, or similarly to lower and start the carrier, thereby insuring uniform treatment of the successive rows of splints with the contents of the vessel.
3. In a match machine, the combination with a main shaft, a splint carrier, actuating means between said shaft and carrier, a vessel below the path of the carrier, and a vertically-movable carrier support above said vessel, of a power-driven shaft, operative connection, including locking and releasing means, between said drive shaft and the main shaft, brake mechanism for the main shaft, pneumatic motor means including a manually operative controlling device, and operative connections between the said pneumatic means, the locking and releasing means, the brake mechanism and the carriersupport, whereby through proper movement of the said controlling device the said looking and releasing means, brake mechanism and carrier support are simultaneously operated, thereby effecting the raising and stopping of the carrier instantaneously, or similarly the lowering and starting of the carrier, so as to insure uniform treatment of the successive rows of splints with the contents of the vessel.

In a match machine, the combination with a main shaft, a splint carrier, actuating means between said shaft and carrier, a vessel below the path of the carrier, and a vertically-movable carrier-support above said vessel, of an auxiliary drive shaft, sprocket gearing between said drive shaft the said locking and releasing means,
and the main shaft, locking and releasing means for said gearing, brake mechanism for the main shaft, pneumatic motor means including a manually-operative controlling device, a shipper lever connected with said pneumatic means, and operative connections between said lever, the locking and releasing means, the brake mechanism, and the carrier support, whereby through proper manipulation of the said controlling device brake mechanism and carrier support are simultaneously operated, thereby effecting the raising and stopping of the carrier instantaneously, or similarly the lowering and starting of the carrier, so as to insure uniform treatment of the successive rows of splints with the contents of the vessel.

In a match machine, the combination with a main shaft, a splint carrier, actuating means between said shaft and carrier, a paraffin tank and a composition chest below said carrier, and vertically-movable carrier supports above the said tank and chest respectively, of a power driven shaft, gearing between said latter shaft and the main shaft, locking and releasing means for said gearing, brake mechanism for the main shaft, cranks, connections between said cranks and the respective carrier supports, operating rods for said cranks, and pneumatic motor means operatively connected with the said rods, the brake mechanism and the locking and releasing means, said pneumatic means including a manually-operative controlling device by manipulation of which the said Copies of this patent may be obtained for brake mechanism and the locking and releasing means are simultaneously operated, thereby effecting the raising and stopping of the carrier instantaneously, or similarly the lowering and starting of the carrier, so as to insure uniform treatment of the succeeding rows of splints with the contents of said tank and chest.
6. In a match machine, the combination with a main shaft, a splint carrier, actuat-' ing means between said shaft and carrier, a brake, a vessel beneath the path of the carrier, and a vertically-movable carrier sup port above said vessel, of a power driven shaft, operative connection between said latter shaft andthe main shaft, said connection including a clutch element on the powerdriven shaft, a shipper lever, a connection between said shipper lever and the clutch element, means connecting said lever with the carrier support, means connecting said lever with the said brake, and pneumatic motor operating means connected with said lever, said last-named means including a manually-operative controlling device by manipulation of which the said connections are operated to raise and stop the carrier instantaneously, or similarly to lower and start the carrier, thereby insuring uniform treatment of the succeeding rows of splints with the contents of the vessel.
