UNITED STATES 1, 2 23 PATENT OFFICE;

nnaw wom lpplication fled April 80, 1926. Serial 1T0. 105,789.
My invention relates to drilling apparatus and more articularly to that portion of a rotary wel drillingv apparatus known as the draw wo ks. Y,
3 In drilling apparatus of the above mentioned character a winding drum and the rotary table are generally driven from the I same SOIlI'CG of power and from the same drive shaft, but as ordinarily constructed, 1t
1 10 is impossible to get but a very small, if any,
selection of speeds for the driven apparatus from the drive shaft, and if there is any selectionthis is very difficult to obtain as it involves the moving of chains from one Sprocket to the other or some similar act that is diflicult to perform.
It is a purpose of my invention to provide new and improved speed changing mechamsm 1n a draw works, whereby a large num- "3o gears meshing with other paired gears mounted on the drive shaft. Preferably the ars on the drive shaft are slidably mounted so that the same can be moved into ition so that one gear of the pair on the rive shaft will mesh with a gear on the countershaft or. the other gear of the air on the drive shaft will mes with the ot er gear on the vcountershaft to obtain a different speed than would be obtained from the first set of gears meshin Preferably two pairs of such gears on the rive ft are rovided, which are movable independent 0 each other to throw one of either pair of gears into mesh with the proper one of a plurality of gears on the countershaft. The gears of one pair are preferably'of a different size than the ars of the other pair so as to et four ifierent speeds from the drive sha in this manner. The spacing. of the gears on the so countershaft is preferably such that both of the gears of a pair on the drive shaft associated with a pair of gears on the countershaft can be moved to a position that neither of the gears on the drive shaft will mesh with the gears on the countershaft, thus providing means whereby a gear of either pair can be used for driving without the gears of the other air being in mesh.
Other 0 jects and advantages of the invention will appear as the description of the accompanying drawings roceeds. However, I desireto have it distlnctly understood that I do not intend to limit m self to the exact details shown or describe that I .intend to include as part of my invention all such obvious changes and modifications of parts as would occur to a person skilled in this art and as would fall within the scope of the claims.
In the drawings: a
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my improveddraw works.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly broken away, thereof, and- Fig. 3 is an end elevation, partly in section, thereof.
Referring in detail to the drawings:
My improved draw works comprises a frame having the lower member 10, the vertically extendin members 11 and the top member 12. ounted in suitable bearings 13 on the vertically extending members 11 is the drive shaft 14 which is provided with a rocket 15 over which a chaln asses a for driving said shaft, the chain being riven by anysuitable source of power, such as an engine. The shaft 14 is further provided with the intermediate bearings 16 provided on the depending brackets 17 on the member 12. The outer ends of the shaft 14 may be provided with suitable winches or winding drums 18. V I
Mounted on the shaft 14 are the paired gears 19-20 and 21-22. Said gears 19 and 20 are mounted so as to rotate together and 95 are slidabl mounted on the shaft 14, engag ing with t e key 23 thereon so as to always rotate with said shaft. The gears 21 and 22 are also mounted so as to rotate together and also en ge with the key 23 the same 100 manner as o the gears 19 and 20. The ars 19 and 21 are provided with grooved co ars or grooved hu portions 24 and 25 respectively, with whic the pins 26 and 27 on the levers 28 and 29 engage. The levers 28 and 105 29 are pivoted respectively at 30 and 31 on the member 12, the member 28 being pro-' vided with an operating rod 32 having the handle 33, and the member 29 beinghprovided with an operating rod.34 having t ehandle 1 35. The grooved collars 24 and 25 are each provided with a link 36 that is pivoted to the frame and each link has a pin 37 extending into the groove in each of said collars for properly supporting the same in position and guiding the same in their movements on the shaft 14.
The vertically extending members 11 are also provided with the bearings 38 upon which the countershaft 39 is mounted, said countershaft also having the central bearing members 40 mounted on the bracket members 17. The countershaft is provided with a gear 41 that'is adapted to mesh with the gear 19, a gear 42 that is adapted to mesh with the gear 20, a gear 43 that is adapted to mesh with the gear 21 and a gear 44 that is adapted to mesh with the gear 22, said gears being all fixed in position on the countershaft 39 and mounted to rotate therewith. The countershaft 39 is further provided with a bevel gear 45 meshing with the bevel gear 46 that is provided on the vertically extending shaft 47 which is mounted in the bearing brackets 48 and 49 provided on one of the vertically extending members 11. The lower end of the shaft 49 is .provided with a bevel gear 50 that meshes with a bevel gear 51 provided on the shaft 52. Said shaft 52 is provided with a clutch of any suitable form 53, operated by the actuating lever 54 for connecting the shaft 52 with the shaft 55, said shaft 55 being provided with a flexible coupling 56 connecting the same with a shaft 57 that is provided with a bevel gear 58 meshing with the gear teeth 59 provided on the under side of the rotary table 60.
The gear 42 meshes with a gear 61 that is mounted to rotate freely on the shaft 62 mounted in the bearings 63 on the members 11. A clutch member 64 is provided on the gear wheel 61 that meshes with a cooperating clutch member 65 connected with the shaft 62 when the same is moved into engagement with the member 64 by means of the yoke 66 having pins 67 operating in the groove 68 on the clutch member 65, said member being movable into position by means of the lever 69 pivoted on the ears 70 on one of the members 11. When the clutch members 64 and 65 are in mesh, the
drum 71 is rotated due to rotation of the shaft 62 along with the gear 61. When the clutch members are disengaged, however, the drum 71 is not rotated by the gearing, and if it is desired to slow down or stop the rotation of the same, the band brake members 72 engaging with the flanges 73 on the drum 71 are actuated by means of the lever 74 having the shaft-like portion 75 provided with the crank members 76 thereon, to engage the band members 72 with the flanges 73 either to slow down or stop the rotation of the drum 71. Springs 77 are provided extending from the ears 78 on the band members 72 to the collars 79 mounted on the countershaft 39, which tend to hold the band 72 away from the surface of the flanges 73.
It will be obvious that either the clutch comprising the members 64 and 65 or the clutch 53 can be operated to stop the rotation of the drum 71 or the rotary table 60. The spacing of the gears is such that both of the gears 21 and 22 can lie between the gears 43 and 44 and both of the gears 19 and 20 can lie between the gears 41 and 42. Accordingly any gear can be connected with the gear capable of co-operat-ing therewith, without throwing any of the other gears in mesh, to obtain any one of four different speeds of rotation of the countershaft 39 relative to the drive shaft 14, and thus of the drum 71 or the rotary table 60 relative to the drive shaft 14 and relative to the engine or other driving means provided for rotating the shaft 14. Thus a very quickly changeable connection is provided between the driving shaft and the members to be driven thereby, giving a much greater selection as well as a much more easily operable driving means than has been previously known.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
