Description

H. G. HU BBARD.
Suspenders. K
No.153,828. PatentedAug. 4,1874.
WITNESSES ATTO R N EYS UNITEDSTATES PATENT OFFICE. N
HENRY G. HUBBARD, OF MIDDLETOWN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN SUSPENDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153.828, dated August 4, 1874 application tiled Apri14, 1874.
To all zc/tom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY G. HUBEARD, of Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Suspenders; and .l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings are representations of detail views of my suspenders, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the same.
This invention has relation to Suspenders for supporting pantaloons upon the person of a wearer; and the noveltv consists in a grommet, connecting the two main cross-straps at their point of intersection, whereby it serves as a pivot upon which the said straps are allowed to accommodate themselves to the form of the wearer, be he broad or narrow shouldered, the said straps being prevented from un raveling by a strengthening portion or collar stitched to the web between the lips of the said grommet and the upper and lower surfaces of the said straps. It also consists in a forelock or washer, whichis applied upon the wrong or iiesh side of a pair of Suspenders, between the upset portion of the said grommet and the said strengthening-collar, whereby the grommet is prevented from being drawn through the perforation made for its insertion, and the raw edge of the upset portion thereof is prevented from wearing out said strengthening portion, as will be hereinafter more fully explained.
In the annexed drawings, A A designate the main crossed straps of a pair of Suspenders, united at their point of intersection by means of a grommet, B, which is passed into registering-perforations in the said straps, and is then properly upset for the purpose of keeping it in place. This grommet is in the nature of a pivot, and will consequently allow the said straps to accommodate themselves to the person of a broad or narrow shouldered wearer, adding greatly to his comfort and ease. a designates strengthening-collars, which are stitched to the said straps around the perforations for the grommet, and are themselves perforated for a similar purpose. These strengthening-collars are applied upon the wrong or flesh side of the lower strap, and upon the outside of the upper strap, and serve to prevent the webbing, of which the straps are usually made, from unraveling, and allowing the said grommet to be withdrawn from the straps. The said grommet is inserted into the perforations in the straps from the front to the rear or flesh side thereof, and is then upset against the strengthening-collars; but, as its raw edges would soon cut through the said collar by its continual friction thereon, I have applied, as a preventive, between the said collar and the raw edges of the grommet, a metal washer or forelock, b, as is shown in Fig.l 1 of the drawings, and have thus rendered the friction innocuous.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In apair of Suspenders, the combination, with the grommet or pivot B, of the main cross-straps A A and the strengthening-collars a, stitched to the under surface of the inner straps and the upper surface of the outer strap, substantially as specified.
2. The forelock or washer b, in combination with the grommet B and the cross-straps A A, pivoting upon the grommet B, substantiall y as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
HENRY G. HUIBBARD. Witnesses:
