Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE F. DEWEY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HLMSELF, WILLIAM A. DROWN, AND WILLIAM A. DROWN, JR., OF SAME PLACE, AND WILLIS H. BELKNAP AND WEBSTER O. POWELL, OF NEW YORK CITY.
IMPROVEMENT IN UMBRELLA-HOLDERS FOR VEHICLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,8 13, dated August 4,1874; application filed June 16, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE F. DEWEY, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Holding Device for Umbrellas, 8vo., of which the following is a specification:
The main object of my invention is to secure an umbrella to the seat or other portion of an express-wagon or other vehicle, by the device illustrated in the sectional view, Figure l, and plan view, Fig. 2, of the accompanying drawing, the said holding device consisting mainly of two semi-spherical blocks, A and A', arranged to embrace the umbrella-stick B, and to be tightly clamped to the same by the pressure of two recessed plates, D and D', between which the said blocks are retained, and on which they can, together with the stick. be adjusted to any angle, all as fully described hereafter.
E represents a portion of the driver's seat of an express-wagon or other vehicle, over which the umbrella is to be held. A plate, F, is secured to the front of the seat, and between guides a a, on this plate, is wedged a tapering projection, b, on the lower plate D' of the holding device; this method of attachment permitting the latter to be readily connected to and disconnected from the seat, but its accidental disengagement is prevented by a pin, d, which is passed through both plates and into the seat, as shown. The upper plate D of the holder is hinged to the lower plate at c, and the two plates are recessed at the center for the reception of the semi-spherical clampingblocks A and A', which are pressed toward each other and against the umbrella-stick B, when the said plates are drawn together by a set-screw, h, with which they are provided. On loosening this set-screw, the blocks A A' will be released, and can then be turned to any desired position upon the plates, within certain limits, for the purpose of adjusting the umbrella-stick to the desired angle, and after such adjustment the parts can be again tightly clamped together by simply turning the setscrew.
I prefer, in carrying out my invention, to
arrange the hinge e and set-screw l1. as shown, but the arrangement may be reversed by hinging the plate D at its outer instead of at its inner end, or two set-screws, h, may be employed, one at each side of the clampingblocks, in which case the hinge may be dispensed with altogether.
Although my improved holding device is especially intended for umbrellas, it is equally applicable to the retention of small flag-staffs and other objects which it is desirable to adjust longitudinally or to an angle.
I do not claim connecting the staff' of an umbrella or ilag to a support or holder by a ball and socket or an universal joint 5 but I claim as my invention- An umbrella-holding device, in which two recessed plates, D and D', admitting of adjustment toward and from each other, are combined with two. semi-spherical clampingblocks, A and A', for the reception and retention of a stick, B', all substantially as specied.
In testimony whereoi I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEO. F. DEWEY.
Witnesses: WM. A. STEEL HARRY SMITH.
