DOOR-CONTROLLING Means.
Application filed June 22, 1923. Serial No. 647,157.
' and for holding the same in various open positions.
It is the object of my inventlon to provide a simple, effective and strong device for looking a closure such as a door and for holding the same in a definite open position; further, to provide improved door controlling means whereby the door may be held in locked closed relation or in locked open relation, and whereby release in the controlling means permits the swinging of the door through an angle of substantially one hundred and eighty degrees.
The invention will "be further readily understood from the following description and claims, andv from the drawings, in which latter:

of one of the devices will serve for the pair of the same. j g The doors are shown at 11 and 12, form- 1ng closure for a door-opening 13, the walls of which are shown at 14. -The doors are hingedby .means of hinges15, of suitable number and suitably placed, so as to swing outwardly in order that the inside of the garage may be clear of the doors.
Each of the doors is provided-with a guide-strip 18, the guiding portion 19 of- I which is spaced from the door by-a space 20, by means of brackets 21 atthe ends of, the
guide-strip, terminating in feet '22- secured against the inside face of the door, as by means of screws 23.
A brace-rod 25 is hinged to thewall of the door-opening by means of'a hinge 26,
having a removable pintle 27 held to the brace-rod by means of a flcxible connection,
shown as a chain 28, one'end of which is secured in a hole 29in; thebrace rod and the other end of which is-fastened inaring 30 on the removable pintle. The removable pintle is received through ,eyes 31 formed by bending the end of the brace-rod and through an eye .82 of a member 33 of the.
hinge arranged'to be secured to the wall of the door-opening. The eyes 31 are separated by a slot 34 in the end of the bracerod, the eye 32 being received in said slot.
The swinging end of the brace-rod is at its upper and lower, edges provided "with flanges 41, 42, for forming slots 43,44, in
which the guide-strip is received. 1 The.
swinging endlof thebrace-rod is also provided with an outward'bulge 45 between said flanges whereby to additionally strengthen said swinging end. 9
The flanges are received aboutthe upper and lower edges of the guide-strip, for locating said-upper and lower edges in saidslots. The outer bracket ofthe guide-strip is provided with notches 46, 47, through which the flanges 41, 42, may be readily received when assembling the parts, for locating the guide-edges of the guide strip in the edge slots-of the swinging end ofthe brace-rod.
"' i A spring 51 has its inner end secured to 'h'ole,'-the door is in locked closed position, as shown in F 1g. 1 and the brace-rod, for instance,'by means of rivets 52. It is provided with an outward bend by means of a screw 56. 'The bolt is received through-a hole 58 in the bulge 45.
The guide-strip'jis provided with holes 61, 62,'adj-aoent the brackets, the bolt being arranged to be selectively received in said holes. .WVhen the bolt is located in the outer in full lines in Figs. Qand 3.,
' If it is desired to open the door, the bolt is withdrawn from the hole 61 by pulling on 1 the handle 54, whereupon the door may be swung outwardly and the guide-strip slide inthe guidewayin the swinging end of the brace-rod. Then the door has been swung outwardly as shown in dotted lines in Fig.
2, the bolt snaps into the hole 62 and locks l; thedoor in open relation.
The bolt swings with the outer end of the spring on an are having the fixed end of the spring as a pivot, and the relation of the bolt and the hole 58in the bulge is such, that when the bolt has been sufliciently withdrawn to be clear of the hole in the guidestrip, the side of the bolt contacts the wall of the hole 45 in the bulge, and thereby prevents further outward movement of the I ,springfor-maintainingthe bolt in the hole 58, andpermits the handle 54 to be used as "a handle for swinging the door, and for opening and closing. the same, and for locking'the same in open po or dos-ed position.

If it is desired to swing the doorto greater extent so that thedoor is substantially against the outer an arc of substantially one hundred and eighty degrees, as 'shown'in dotted lines in 3, so as to be substantially parallel with the plane of thedoor-opening.
The bolt connection and the flange connection between the swinging end of the brace-rod and the guide-strip is such as "to insure maintenance of connection between them, so that when the door is swung back into substantially right angle position with relation to the door-opening, the pintle may again be inserted into the eyes of the hinge for again readily connecting the parts.
My improved construction is simple and strong and takes up little space, and is out of the way when in use, and insures the looking of the door from the insideiall of the operating parts of the device being. on the inside of the door when the door is in closed position. The brace-rod and'the guidestrip may be formed out of'fiat metal and are of simple construction. The device "provides ready means for locking the door either in closed relation or infull open relatlon, as shown in Fig. 2.

The combination with the wall of a door-opening, a door pivoted to said wall on a hinge having a pintle at the outer side of said wall and laterally spaced from the edge face or" said wall and arranged for outward swinging of said door, a brace-rod pivoted at one end to said wall closely adjacent to said edge face at the inside of said door, a guide-strip secured to the inner face of said door and provided with holes, said brace-rod and guide-strip located in the median por- Lion of the height of said door, the swinging end of said brace-rod provided with flanges about said guide-strip for sliding connection therewith, a spring-bar, one end of which is fixed to said brace-rod adjacent to its swinging end, the other end of said spring-bar arranged to swing toward and trom the swinging end of said bracerod,
