Another object is to construct such a cock with a self-seating valve lwhich prevents cutting of the valve or its seat incident to the forcing of the valve against its seat such as occurs whenfscrewed in and which also avoids wearing or stripping of the threads. v
Another object is to so construct suoli a valve that it may readily be groundV in case Ot leakage without removing` any part.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the coinbination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood Vthat changes in the precise embodiment o1 the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claii'ned with out departing from the spirit ofthe invention. A coiled spring 10 surrounds the valve stem 7 f and bears at one end against a shoulder 11 on the valve 6 and at its other end against a collar bearing against the packing 8 and exerts its tension to normally hold the valve seated and the packing 8 in place.

The pivoted arm 23 has an out-l its free end which is designed to form ay stop to limit the outward swinging move ment of the arm 23.
The slotted end of the valve stem strade dles the arm 23 and is detachably connected therewith in any suitable manner.
In the use of this gauge cock the parts being in the position shown in Fig. l, when it is desired-to unseat valve 6 to permit the Huid in the boiler to pass out through the escape pipe l2 to disclose Whether sufficient steam has been generated therein or for other purposes, all that is necessary is to grasp the pivoted arm 23 using the arm 22 in connection therewith and forcing said arm 23 toward arm 22 thereby moving the valve stein 7 outiif'ardly against the tension of the spring 10 which operates to unseat the valve G. Immediately upon the release of the arm the spring l() Will reseat the valve 6,
llVhen for any reason it is desired to remove the valve or its stem the cut-out cock 4; is turned to close the bore 3 and by unscrewing the nut 25 said valve and its stem may be removed it being of course understood that the stem is first disconnected from the arm 23.
lVhen it is desired to grind the valve G or its seat 5 all that is necessary is to disconnect the stem 7 from the arm 23 and insert a suitable tool in the open slot 9 and rotate the valve on its seat in the usual manner for grinding it.
From the above description it will be obvious that a valve constructed as herein shown and described will be self-seating under the tension of the spring l() avoiding the rotating of the valve such as is necessary when a threaded connection is employed, thus avoiding cutting of the valve or its seat and also Wear and stripping of the threads.
Various changes in the form, shape, proportion and other minor details of construction may be made Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the claimed invention.
I claim:-
A gauge cock comprising a hollow body provided With a spring seated valve for closing one end, said valve having a stein extending through and slidably mounted in the other end, a split collar encircling said body intermediate its ends and held against longitudinal movement thereon, an L-shaped member pivotally mounted at one end on said collar the other end oi said member eX-v tending transi'iersely across the path of said stein and spaced from the outer end of the stem, an arm pivoted to said meinberaiul connected with said stein and adapted to be moved toward the transversely arranged portion of the member to unseat the valve.
