i To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, DAVID DAVIES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have made cert-am new and useful Improvements in Water- Gage Cocks, of which the following is a speclcation.
My invention relates to improvements in water gage cocks, and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed. I
An object of my invention is to provlde a device having a movable valve member arranged to be brought into registration wlth an outlet passage to permit the outflow of water or steam with means permitting the removal of the valve while the boiler is still under steam pressure. n
A further object of my invention 1s to provide a water gage cock having means for shutting oil' the iow when the valve 1s removed, as described above, said means also operating to hold the valve against seat when the latter is in its operative posltlon.
A further object of my invention is to provide a simple device which is made of few parts, and which therefore 1s not liable to get out of order. I
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the device will be particularly pointed out inthe appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part of this application in which- Figure l is a section through the gage cock anda portion of the boiler, Fig. 2 1s a section similar to that shown in Fig. 1, a portion of the device being removed, Fig. 3 is a section along the line 3*3 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the valve and valve stem.
In carrying out my invention I make use of a boiler of any suitable type.
In Fig. 1 the numeral l represents a portion of the boiler wall. This is provided with an opening 1x arranged to receive the tapered threaded portion 2 of the valve casing 3. The valve casing 3 has a reduced portion 4 provided with a recess 4f". The tapered threaded portion 2 of the valve casing is provided with a central bore 2X and at its end has a valve seat 7 arranged to receive a valve 8. The stem of the valve 9 extends forwardly and is provided 4at its end with a head 10. A washer or disk 11 is dis posed on the valve stem 9, and between the disk 11 and the shoulder 12 on the interior of the valve casing, is a spiral spring 13. This spiral spring tends to hold the valve 8 against its seat.
Referring to Fig. 1, it will be seen that the end of the valve casing consists of a cap portion 14 having a reduced threaded portion 15 arranged to engage the threads of the valve casing 3. In the inner end of the cap 14 is an insert 1G of soft metal such as Babbitt metal. The member 14 has a central bore arranged to receive the valve stem 17 of a valve 18. This valve 18 is provided with an opening 18x arranged to register with an L-shaped passage 19 in the valve casing 14. This passage extends through a spout 20, as shown in the drawing. The reduced portion 14X of the cap, however, is provided with a slot 21 in which is disposed the end of a pin 22, which is screwed to the valve stem 17. As will be readily seen from Fig. 3, this gives the pin a certain amount of play and permits the revolution of the valve 90. The usual hand wheel 23 is provided for turning the valve 18.
From i the foregoing description of the various parts of the device the operation thereof may be readily understood. In Fig. 1 I have shown the device as being in the position to permit the passage of water or steam through the channel 19. It is obvious that if the hand wheel 23 be turned 90, it will bring the stop pin 22 to the end of the slot 21, and will bring the opening 18X out of registration with the passage 19, thus shutting off the flow of water and steam.
The provision of the spring 13 assures the proper seating of the valve 18 upon its seat 16, so as to prevent leakage. `When the cap 14 is screwed into position the inner surface of the valve 18 will engage the head 10 and thus force the valve 8 off from its seat, so as to permit a free How from the boiler into the interior of the valve casing.
If it should become necessary at any time to grind the valve 18 or to repair any of the parts connected with the cap lll, the latter is simply unscrewed from the valve casing 3. The spring 13 causes the closure of the valve 8 and the pressure on the inside of the boiler holds the latter against its seat, thereby preventing any escape of water or steam. When the cap 14 is again screwed into place,
