To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. FINK, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gage-Cocks, of'which the'following is a specification. a
This invention relates to improvements in gage-cocks; and the object of the same is to produce a device in Which a free passage may be insured.
A further object is to provide adevice which may be taken apart for repairing while it is in position in the boiler and without the escape of steam.
To this end the invention consists of a casing having two oppositely-disposed valveseats with valves therefor and a plunger-rod running entirely through the casing and one of the valve-stems, one of the said v'alves'being closed by the usual valve-stem and the other by a valve on the plunger-rod operated by the boiler-pressure.
This invention is intended as an improvement on Patent No. 743,702, issued to me under date of November 10, 1903.
The invention is more fully described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a gage-cock embodying my improvements, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the lock-nut.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the casing of a gage-cock, and 2 the usual valve-stem. This stem rests on the valve-seat 3 in the casing and has the usual operating-handle 4 on the outer end thereof. A second valve-seat 5 is formed in the casing a short distance inside of the inner end thereof, facing in the direction opposite the valve 3. A plunger-rod 6 passes entirely through the gage-cock, and said rod is of a diameter slightly smaller than the opening or passage 6, which connects the two valve-seats 3 and 5, to allow for the passage of the steam. One end of this rod 6 projects beyond the handle 4 and is provided with a screw-thread, onto which is screwed asuitable handle 7. The other end of the rod 6 is formed with a valve 8, adapted to engage the seat 5, and the end of the rod adjacent this valve is flattened to form a rearwardly-extending blade 9 of a width equal to the diameter of the opening in the inner end of the casing 1, in which said blade is housed.
The handle t is provided with a screwthreaded portion 4:, into which is screwed a lock-nut 4:, through which the plunger-rod 6 passes, and the handle 7, which engages the end of said rod, is provided with a sleeve or stem 10, on which is formed a lip or projection 11, adapted to engage an Lshaped slot 12 in the lock-nut 4 for a purpose hereinafter set forth.
In use the gage-cock is applied to the boiler as usual, and when it is desired to clean the opening therein the plunger-rod 6 is operated longitudinally and also revolubly by means of the handle 7, causing the blade 9 to clean out any settlings that may have gathered at the entrance to the casing-opening. When it is desired to take the gage-cock apart, the handle 7 is pushed forward until the lip 11 engages the slot 12 in the lock-nut 44. This handle 7 is then rotated to the left until the projection 11 engages the inner end of the slot 12. A continued rotating of the handle 7 in the same direction will cause the nut 4: to be unscrewed from its seat 4t in the handle 4. Just as said nut disengages its seat t the pres sure from the boiler is exerted upon the valve 8, causing it to become firmly seated upon the valve-seat 5. This pressure will create a great friction between the valve and its seat, which will hold the rod 6 and permit the handle 7 to be further rotated until it disengages the screw on the end of said rod. The main handle 4 and stem 2 are then readily unscrewed and can be taken out of the casing for repairs. When this main valve-stem 2 is removed, the steam-pressure will seat the valve 8 against the seat 5, thus closing the valve and prevent- If for any reason ing the escape of steam.
the handle should be held. so tightly on the threads on the end of the rod 6 that the pressure from the boiler is not suflicient to hold the rod still to permit the handle 7 to be easily unscrewed therefrom, the rod may be held firmly by means of a small wrench or other means by grasping the same at a point just beyond the handle 4, said rod being long enough for that purpose.
It will be seen that with my present device it will not be'necessary to remove the gage cock after it has been placed in position. It

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A gage-cock comprising a casing provided with oppositely-disposed valve-seats, a valve-stem engaging one of said seats, a rod passing through the casing and valve-stem, a valve carried by the inner end of the rod and adapted to engage the other valve-seat, an operating-handle on the free end of the rod and means for locking the rod and valve-stem together.
2. A gage-cock comprising a casing provided with oppositely-disposed valve-seats, a valve-stem engaging one of said seats, a rod passing through the casing and valve-stem, a valve carried by the inner end of the rod and adapted to engage the other valve seat, a cleansing device carried by the valve on the end of the rod, an operating-handle on the free end of the rod and means for locking the rod and valve-stem together.
3. A gage-cock comprising a casing provided with oppositely-disposed valve-seats, a valve-stem engaging one of said seats, a plunger-rod passing through the casing and valvestem, a valve carried by the inner end of the rod and adapted to engage the other valveseat, a projecting blade carried by the valve on the end of said rod, an operating-handle on can be kept constantly open by means of the l the other end of the rod, and means for locl ing the rod and valve-stem together.

5. A gage-cock comprising a casing provided with a plurality of valve-seats, a valvestem engaging one of said seats and an operating-handle carried by said stem, a rod, a valve carried by said rod and engaging the other seat, a removable handle carried by the rod, a lock-nut carried by the handle on the stem, and a projection on the handle carried by the rod, said projection being adapted to engage the nut for locking the valve-operating parts together.
6. A gage-cock comprising a casing, opp0 sitely-disposed valve -seats in said casing, valves engaging said seats, operating members for said valves, a removable nut carried by one of the valve-operating members and a projection carried by the other valve-operating member adapted to engage the nut for removing the same.
7 A gage-cock comprising a casing, oppositely-disposed valve-seats therein, valves engaging said seats, independentoperatin g members for said valves, aremovable lock-nut carried by one of the valve-operating members, a removable handle carried by the other valveoperating member, a projection on said handle adapted to engage the nut for unseating the same.
8. A gage-cock comprising a casing having two valve-seats therein, a valve-stem adapted to engage one of said seats, an operating-handle on said valve-stem, a lock-nut in said handle, a plunger-rod passing longitudinally through the entire gage-cock, a removable handle on the outer end of the rod, a projecting lip on said handle adapted to engage said lock-nut, a valve on the inner end of said rod adapted to engage the inner valve-seat of the casing and a flattened blade formed on the extreme inner end of said rod.
9. A gage-cock comprising a casing, oppositely-disposed valve-seats therein, valves engaging said seats, one of said valves being positively seated, the other being seated by fluid-pressure, operating-handles carried by said valves, and means carried by the handles for locking the same together for removing the positively-seated valve.
