T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known t-hat I, SAMUEL PA'r'roN, citizen of the United States, residing at Vashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gage-Cocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gage cocks for steam boilers and pertains especially to the class of gage cocks Without a st-op-cock, and adapted for cleaning and repair while the pressure is on the boiler.
The object of the invention is to provide .in a gage cock for steam boilers, a stem provided with a longitudinal passage which terminates in a valve seat and has its op osite end in communication with the interior of a boiler by an inclined duct extending from the periphery of the stem to the inner end of the said passage7 said stem extending into the boiler and Working through a sleeve attached to the boiler for opening and closing the said duct, and a valve stem coperatmg with the said seat and adapted to be removed and replaced while the duct is closed and while the pressure is on the boiler.
A further object ot' the invention is to provide in a gage cock for steam boilers, a centrally channeled stem having one end working within the boiler and having a duct extending from the periphery of said end into said channel, andv novel and peculiar means for opening and closing the duct and the channel.
Various other objects, advantages and improved results are attainable in the practical application of the invention,

The same reference numerals denote the same parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In thisf gage cock there is only one valve and valve seat, and the usual stop-cock is dispensed with, yet the said val-ve and its stem may be cleaned and repaired without removing the pressure on the boiler, by reason oit' the special construction and arrangement of the parts, as will now be particularly described.
A special tubular bushing o1' sleeve 1 is provided with a nut-portion 2, a tapered screw-thread 3, which screws into the boiler head 4 and constitutes the only means for attaching the gage-cock to the boiler, an inner thread 5 extending from an inner shoulder 6 to the inner end of the sleeve, a thread 7 on the outer end of the sleeve for a gland-nut 8, which coperates with a gland 9, packing 10, and packing ring 11, within the outer end of the sleeve.
The stem 12 has a central bore or channel 18, a chamber 13, a valve-seat 14 which is engaged by the end of the valve-steam 15, operated through the outer end of the stem 12 by a hand plece 16 for opening and closing communication between an outlet 17 and the channel or passage 18 ofl the stem 12. The channel or passage 18 extends from the valve-seat 14, and terminates adjacent the inner end of the stem 12, and a duct 19 extends at an angle from this end of the channel 18 through the periphery of this end of the stem, which is solid except for the duct 19, and has a conical screwthreaded portion 12 which projects from the tube or sleeve 1 into the boiler so as to lace the duct in communication with the oiler. The stem 12 has a shoulder 20 from which it is enlarged and is screw-threaded at 21 to the inner end thereof, and such enlarged threaded portion works in the sleeve thread 5, when the stem is turned by a suitable wrench applied to the nut portion 22 of the stem.
It is obvious that the stem 12 is turned so as to move it outwardly sufliciently to carry the mouth ot' the duct 19 into the inner end of the sleeve or bushing 1, and thereby shut ott' communication between the channel 18 and the boiler. In this position the valve stem 15 may be removed for the purpose of cleaning and grinding it and the valve seat 14, and also rendering the chamber 13 and the channel 18, as well as the duct 19, accessible during the period of closed connection with the boiler.
It will be observed that the inner end of the stem 12 is made without the usual valve; that it fits the bushing or sleeve so as to prevent leakage, and so as to eiiectually cut 0H the cock Without cutting ofi' the pressure in the boiler; and that the valve at the outer end of the stem l2 is the only valve in the cock. Therefore valve-leakage, repair, etc., is reduced to one valve, and the contents of the boiler is in direct communication with this valve (as long as the ductis open) by reason of there being no valve or other device to operate between this valve and the mouth of the duct. By the outward movement of the stem l2, the sleeve l closes the duct in a most expeditious manner so that the usual valve wear and leakage at this point is entirely avoided.
I do not wish to limit myself to any particular size, shape or material in the manufacture of the cock, nor to any special angle or incline of the duct, but reserve to myself the right to make such changes therein as may come within the scope of the claims covering the same.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let` ters Patent is:
l. In a gage cock for steam boilers, the combination, with a screw stem having a longitudinal channel, a valve seat in the stem at the outer end of the channel, and a duct leading into the inner end of the channel from the boiler, of a tube secured to and projecting into the boiler and having an internal screw-thread in which the duct end of the stem is turned for opening and closing communication between the boiler and the said channel.
Q. In a gage cock for steam boilers, the combination, with a packing gland tube having a portion thereof secured to and projecting into the boiler, of a revoluble stem having an enlarged screw -threaded end working through said tube portion into the boiler, said stem having a longitudinal bore terminating in a valve seat and in a duct leading through said stem end into the boiler, said duct opened and closed by turning the stem in said tube portion.
3. In a gage cock for steam boilers, the combination, with a packing gland tube having an interna-l screw-threaded portion secured toand projecting into the boiler, of a channeled stem extending through and projecting from each end 0f the gland having an enlarged end screwing in the said tube portion so that the latterwill open and close communication between the channel and the boiler by revolving the stem.

In a gage cock, the combination, of a longitudinally channeled stem having an angular duct leading from one end of the channel through the periphery of a threaded end of the stem, a valve seat in the stem at the outer end of the channel, and means in which the stem is revolved for opening and closing the duct.
5. In a gage cock, the combination, of a revoluble screw stemhaving a longitudinal bore terminating in a valve seat and in a duct which extends through the periphery of an enlarged screw-threaded end of the stem, and means in which the stem is revolved for opening and closing the duct.
G. In a gage cock, a stem having a channel terminating in a valve seat and in a duct leading' through the periphery of one end of the stem, such stem end having a straight screwthreaded portion and a conical screwthreaded portion. y
