To all whom'itrnay'.concern; a
Be it known that. WYInoIsLAw KWrArrnow- SE1 and HrPonrr \VrnsoHoN, citizens of P- land residing at Astoriayhonglsland, in the county of Queens and State Off New York, haveinvented contain: new and useful Improvements in Extension Beds,..of which the folliowing is a specification;
This invention relates generally to beds, having more paiticularwrettenence tofla'n extension bed which may be in width according as :it is intended. for .u-seas a single or double bed, the invention having for an object the provisionof "a. novel and simple bed. of this sort, a further object, relating tothe prov? ion of. a nov'el means for relatively adjusting the two spring sections to a common. level when the bed is, extended, while permitting sprang section to be projected under the otherwhen the bed 1s collapsed or contracted. I V
For further comprehension of the 'inven tion, and of the .b s and advantages thereof referencewill be had-tothe-lfollow- 7 ing description and accompanyingdrawing, and to the appended claims inwhich the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
- Fig. 1 ofthe drawing is a central longiments.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary longitudinal vertical sectional view indicating particularly the position of the sprlng sectlonswhen the bed is extended. 7 v
As here embodied our improved bed comprises a pair of sectional frame elements. These sections comprise the end bars 10 and 11 for the respective sections which have a generally telescopic engagement with one another. The bars 10 and 11 are united at their remote ends respectively by the side pieces 12 and 13. The bars 10 are formed with longitudinal guide grooves 15 in which engage slidably the ends of the bars 11. The
bars 10 having stretched therebetween the I spring element or section 16 while alike spring section 171s stretched between the bars 11. The IQSPGCtlVG fl'ftlDfi sections are mounted on legs as respective "spring sections are: located :at the top edges of the two bars it -is desirable that means be provided :to :en able the said sections to he brought to a common level when the bed is extended. Tothis endthespring sectionjhG: is not eonnectedxdireothyi to the: bars a 10 but to supplementary pieces 20 extendin-galong the inner faces of such-bars and sunk into suitable "recesses in the latter. hen the bed is contracted or collapsed these pieces rest freely at one end onthe topof the bars 11 as shown clearly in the drawing. These ends maybevconneeted by.
a bracing bar 15. At their-other ends these pieces '20 areqsuzpported by means of the eccentric heads 21 of bolts 22 which are passed through the bars 10 and have lock nuts 23 f thereon, and which may have squared ends 24 toreceive turning tool's.
. 'To n'iove the two bed, sections toward and away from one. another we provide a pair.
of shafts, 2.6 and 2.7 which are here shown as extending longitudinally of the bed and located one att-he inner edge and the other at the outer edge of the section having-the bars 10 and side piece 12. The shaft 26 is mounted in bearing elements 29 fixed-to the undersides of the bars 10 at the inner ends of the latter this shaft serving as an intermediate longitudinal brace located between 1 the two sides of the bed, and is. provided with squared ends .30 for receiving a turning tool. 'Upon thls shaft are mounted the drums 32 of which there 18 0116 near each end of the shaft, and over these drums are wound the cords '33 which connect to brackets 34 on the inner ends of the bars 11,
rotation of the shaft 26 serving to extend.
the bed. The shaft 27 is mounted on hearing elements such as 36 by the side piece 12, andhas mounted thereon a pair of drums 37 over which are wound the cords or wires 38 which extend transversely under the bed and connect to brackets 39 on the side piece 13. The shaft 27 may have squared ends 27 to receive turning lmplement.
It 1s believed that the manner of adjust ment of our improved bed will be readily understood from the above description. Vhen the bed is collapsed and is to be extended the shaft 26 is turned to pull on the cord 33 and so extend the bed. As the latter is at the end of its extension movement the inner ends of the members 20 drop down on PIOJQCUODS 11 on the inner ends of the bars 11; The bolts 22, which have first been loosened are given a half turn, dropping the other ends of the members downward, the two spring sections 16 and 17 being then on a common level. \Vhen the bed is to be collapsed the members 20 are raised by hand while the shaft 27 is given enough movement to bring the ends of the bars 11 under the said members the bolts 22 are then turned to raise the other ends of the members 20 and the rotation of shaft 27 completed to bring the bed to collapsed position, the cords Winding on the drums 37 as shaft 27 is rotated, and thereby drawing the sections to collapsed position.
In Fig. 4c of the drawing We have shown in diagram a modified arrangement for moving the two sections upon one another. As here shown I provide only theshaft 26 and the drums 32. Over each ldrum is wound a single cord i0 which is fixed to the drum midway between its ends and which connects at opposite ends to the opposite sides of the section composed of the elements 11, 18. By rotating this shaft in opposite directions the bed may be extended or collapsed.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
1. A bed comprising end bars each made up of a pair of sections, one of said sections being formed with a guide groove and the other section engaging slidably in said guide, a spring section fixed at its ends to the bars of the first named section, vertically adjustable members extending along the other bars of the other section, and a spring section fixed at its ends to the said vertically adjustable members, said vertically adjustable members resting freely on the bars of the second named section at one end, and cam elements supporting the said members at their other ends.
2. A bed comprising end bars each made up of a pair of sections, one of said sections being formed with a guide groove and the other section engaging slidably in said guide, a spring section fixed at its ends to the bars of the first named section, vertically adjustable members extending along the other bars of the other section,
and a spring section fixed at its ends to the said vertically adjustable members, said vertically adjustable members resting at one end on the bars of the second named section, bolts carried by the bars of the first named section, and eccentric heads on said bolts supporting the said vertically adj ustable members at their other ends.
A bed comprising end bars each made up of a pair of sections, one of said sections being formed with. a. guide groove and the other section engaging slidably in said guide, a spring section fixed at its ends te the bars of the first nan'ied section, vertically adjustable members extending along the other bars of the other section, and a spring section fixed at its ends to the said vertically adjustable members, said vertically adjustable members resting at one end on the bars of the second named section, bolts carried by the bars of the first named section, and eccentric heads on said bolts supporting the said vertically adjustable members at their other ends, said second named bars having projections adapted to receive and support the ends of the said members when the bed is extended.
In testimony whereof we have affixed our signatures.
