PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. CRANE, 0 POTTSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PITMEN.
I Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 153,667, dated August 4, 1874; application tiled December 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. CRANE, of Pottsville, county of Schuylkill, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a Pitman for Sewing and other Machines, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to prevent the noise and jarring caused by the wearing of the journals of sewing and other machine pitmen between the treadle and fly-wheel.
The parts A, B, E, and F form the journalboxes, one end of the rod 0, Figure 2, having a thread screwing into the part B, the other end fitting into a cup formed in the part E, holding and pressing them apart by turning the notched wheel D, which is firmly secured to the rod 0 for that purpose. The parts A and F are held together by the strap G, similar to Figs. 1 and 6, passing over and in the grooves in A and B, as shown at Fig. 3, and into holes in E, Fig. 5, and bent as shown at Fig. 6, to fit into holes in the part F, as shown at Fig. 7, the part E fitting into and firmly securing the ends of the strap G into the part F. The strap G, passing through the notches in the wheel D, Fig. 4, prevents the rod 0 from turning, and enables the parts B and E to be adjusted as desired by springing the strap G out of the notches.
I claim as my invention In a pitman for asewing-maohine, the combination of the parts A, B, O, D, E, F, and G, substantially as and for the purpose described. Witnesses: WM. J. CRANE.
J. I. ALEXANDER, W. YEAGER.
