Be it known that l, REINHARD '.I. TonKnL- sON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vorcester, in the county of Vorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Treadles for Bicycles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and 1o useful improvements in treadles for the operating-cranks of bicycles and like vehicles; and it consists, substantially, in the same as constructed and Yin such peculiar arrangement and combinations of parts as will hereinafter be more particularly described, and pointed out in the claims.
The object of the invention, principally,is to so construct treadles for the operating-cranks of bicycles as that the cost thereof is considera 2o bly cheapened, as compared with many former inventions of a like character, while at the same Vtime the manufacture is rendered simple and easy, the article produced being strong and durable for the purposes required of it,
all as will more fully hereinafter appear when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l represents in perspective a bicycle` treadle embodying the features of my imo proVement; Fig. 2, a similar view of one of the two parts resorted to in the construction, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal sectional view taken centrally through Fig. 1. Before proceeding with adescription in detail, I desire to state that I am aware that treadles for this purpose have been invented heretofore having in view like objects as the present; but it is thought that such former inventions are substantially diferent'in con- 4o struction and arrangement from such as is herein resorted to.
In carrying my invention into effect I provide the treadle in two sections or portions, the same being so held together by the sleeve that receives the shank-spindle as that they (io-operate in lproducing a treadle of that character wherein double foot or operating sur- .faces are obtained.
Reference being had to the several parts of the drawings by the letters marked thereon, 5o A represents as a whole a treadle embodying my invention, the same consisting of two metal plates, B and C, of counterpart construction, each being slotted out, as at a, preferably, for the purpose of minimum weight. Each ot' 55 the said parts B and C is formed or provided with bent portions at the ends, (marked b and 0,) and each having at the angle formed by the bend of one of its ends a slot, cl, and the ends of each of said parts being provided with a 6o circular opening, 6, in alignment with each other. One of the end portions of each part A andB is preferably formed with lugs or ears f, by which when united they will be held the proper distance apart.
D represents the sleeve, through which the spindle of the crank ofthe machine is designed to pass in the usual manner, the same having a collar, g, formed therewith at one end, by which it is prevented from being forced in too 7c far. This sleeve also subserves the function of uniting the parts A and B together in forming the two foot or tread surfaces, as shown. The said parts A and B are united 'together by passing the end portion, b, of the latter up through the slot d of the former, and in like manner passing the` corresponding portion, c, of the former through the corresponding slot d of the latter, and by tightly pressing them together until they are brought down into con- 8o tact with the shoulders f. The openingseare thus brought into alignment or made to coincide.l Then the sleeve D is inserted and the treadle slipped upon the ordinary erank-spin ble nuts or other common devices resorted to for keeping or holding the treadle on.
From the foregoing description it is thought the construction and operation of my invention will be thoroughly understood, and it is 9o evident that very material changes could be resorted to herein without departing from the spirit of my invention. For instance, itis evident that the sleeve D would act just as well in holding the parts A and B together were the lugs f of each dispensed with; but in such event the said parts might possibly be brought closer to the surface of the sleeve than desiradle of a bicycle or similar vehicle, and suita- 8 5 ble, and consequently Iprefer the employment of such lugs in the practice of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a treadle for bicycles and the like, the combination of two metallicstri'ps bent at each end in a corresponding` manner, each being formed with a slot at one of its angles, and the two being united by passing their corresponding ends through the slots, substantially as described.
2. In a treadlc for bicycles, the combination of the parts A and B, bent at the ends, as shown, and provided at opposite ends with corresponding slots and lugs, and perforated,
as at e, and a sleeve, D, passing through the perforations when the parts are united, substantially as shown and. described.
3. As an article of manufacture, atreadlefor 2 bicycles and like Vehicles, consisting of the part A, bent, as at c c, and having slot d, and the part C, similarly constructed, the two being united, substantially as shown.
